(and it works like this with Sennheisers) (i don't want to keep holding one earbud for a minute if i want to talk more - quick attention mode)
I own both and they are both amazing earbuds. The Sony has more options on selecting your equalizer in so many levels. AirPods can charge on a wireless charger. The carries are cheaper on the AirPods. I give the edge to Sony.
Are the sony that you are testing a pre production unit. Heard those units have some phone call issues. Just wondering. I ordered mine yesterday. So excited to get them.
I generally prefer sony, but I don't like the new design. The shiny plastic just makes it look really cheap in my opinion. It's even worse when you consider that they used to have recycled plastic there, which means the new earbuds lost the very small amount of echo-friendliness that they did have, just so they could look different.
It is AirPods for me. It even reminds you instantly on your phone if you leave your AirPods behind say in a flight or taxi or a restaurant. Plus the call quality is way better with decent sound quality. Lastly being in the Apple ecosystem just helps me seamlessly connect across all devices.
I love the pinch controls. Tap controls are annoying and easy to accidentally trigger. I prefer the stem just for the pinch controls and swipe up/down for volume. I own sony XM4 headphones and hate the touch controls on that with a passion.
Just bc aac was made for iphones, it means nothing, ldac still a lot better codec Also xm5s were literally also made for iphones primarily, not all non-apple products are made for androig
I've been using the Bose QC IIs for their noise cancelling that was far superior to my Airpods Pro 2s. However, I've missed the audio quality of the Sony's. I'm cautiously optimistic that with the XM5s I'll get the better noise cancelling and the better sound quality. Most of my calls are indoors and I found the XM4's worked well enough that I never had a complaint.
Thanks for the concise review. I’ve read a lot of reviews over the last week and this consolidated everything well and talks about the important factors. Nicely done. Sounds like AirPods sound better on calls and they have findMy which is underrated feature. I don’t care for the design of the AirPods How do these compare to previous generation?
Much appreciated. I was going to get the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro 2 as I have Samsung gear, but my wife has the headphone version of these, and they are fantastic. I did not realize there was a Buds version. The AirPods lose many features when using my Samsung phone, and these look on par. I still think the Samsung Pro 2 are nice buds (and I may kick myself when the next version is rumored to drop any time), but these seem to be in a different class. Anyone that has alternative ideas, feel free to let me know.
what do you think is better for absolute audio quality between these and the Beoplay EQ? I have the latter and they're still going strong so I was wondering whether this would be an upgrade or a downgrade.
After purchasing and trying the Sony earbuds, I found that I really don’t like the touch controls. I’m constantly brushing up against it accidentally. Also, I don’t like the fit with the foam ear tips. I think I just prefer silicone ear tips. Also, I hate the transparency mode. It’s not natural sounding at all.
I like SONY's compack size rather than Airpod's Stem. But, I really don't like that SONY don't allow to change the controlling option, Just as Soundcore App & also many other earbuds. I find that AWFUL in terms of consumer comfort. Loved the shirt with stripes, Following the sweet colour... 🙂
Were the song tests on both earphones done connected to iPhone? Thinking of getting the XM5s but I know some earphones do better connected to android phones than iPhones.
and vice versa. I found the AirPods Pro 2 to sound significantly better on iOS due to their adaptive EQ feature. Same song through Apple Music on a Pixel 7 Pro just sounded... boring? in comparison. Even took me some time to figure out why it was happening.
I had the WF-1000XM4 for one year until they broke after a Sony update that fried the batteries. Then I had the Momentum True Wireless 3, which we're way better than the Sony's in terms of sound quality. Then I move to iPhone and two weeks ago I got the AirPods Pro 2. They AirPods blew the Sony's out of the water. They are comparable with the Momentum's but they are still better than those too. I just don't believe Sony made such a massive leap to be competitive with AirPods, at least not on iOS, where the AirPods just don't have a competitor. Spotify with a bass boost EQ and Spacial Audio sounds just amazing (i'm a bit of a bass head). I also had bad experiences with the Sony warranty in my country, they basically only change one earbud, when both earbuds had fried battery and the case too. After so many bad experiences with the XM4's I just made a promise to myself to not buy anything Sony again.
I have a healthy amount of skepticism about your claims "AirPods blew the Sony's out of the water". Sony is miles ahead in terms of both ANC and sound quality.
@@vitalkhlebnikov depends on the model. I for example would never buy their basshead-style WH-100XM4 or XM5s. They dropped the professional audio market in the west quite a few years ago and only release good headphones in Japan.
Got to say that Sony aswell has one Feature in the App where the Headphones Play a loud Sound so you can find them. However that does ofcours only Work when you already are near them
One reason to buy non-Apple for iPhone users is, out of principle, not buying bluetooth earbuds from the phone manufacturer that removed the headphone jack.

Love my Bose QC II. Curious to try the Sony but the foam tips tearing worries me. But he didn't mention it in this video
The foam tips are absolutely amazing. Would recommend foam tips with any buds tbh
How is the call quality in the car?
I generally prefer sony, but I don't like the new design. The shiny plastic just makes it look really cheap in my opinion. It's even worse when you consider that they used to have recycled plastic there, which means the new earbuds lost the very small amount of echo-friendliness that they did have, just so they could look different.
You can sand them so they look more premium
It is AirPods for me. It even reminds you instantly on your phone if you leave your AirPods behind say in a flight or taxi or a restaurant. Plus the call quality is way better with decent sound quality. Lastly being in the Apple ecosystem just helps me seamlessly connect across all devices.
Can Sony wf1000xm5 be used independently left or right bud.
I think they similar enough that the one thing that we need to consider is which one fit better
Hi Mike. What do you think about the Technics EAH -AZ80?
Great, clear style of presentation 👍🏼
I love the pinch controls. Tap controls are annoying and easy to accidentally trigger. I prefer the stem just for the pinch controls and swipe up/down for volume. I own sony XM4 headphones and hate the touch controls on that with a passion.
Being on iPhone should I miss out on the xm5? I assume the aac codec would have the pro 2 sounding and xm5 sounding similar
Just bc aac was made for iphones, it means nothing, ldac still a lot better codec
Also xm5s were literally also made for iphones primarily, not all non-apple products are made for androig
Xm5s are really good
Both variants of the xm4 are pretty bad sound wise so u def mean sound signature not quality
@@carlozzz3300 I meant sound quality.
My Link Buds S silicon tips fit perfectly. All I had to do was just transfer them over new XM5's and I'm good to go (no more seal issues).
Thanks for the concise review. I’ve read a lot of reviews over the last week and this consolidated everything well and talks about the important factors. Nicely done. Sounds like AirPods sound better on calls and they have findMy which is underrated feature. I don’t care for the design of the AirPods
How do these compare to previous generation?
Much appreciated. I was going to get the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro 2 as I have Samsung gear, but my wife has the headphone version of these, and they are fantastic. I did not realize there was a Buds version. The AirPods lose many features when using my Samsung phone, and these look on par. I still think the Samsung Pro 2 are nice buds (and I may
kick myself when the next version is rumored to drop any time), but these seem to be in a different class. Anyone that has alternative ideas, feel free to let me know.
Question, was one tested on iphone and the other on an android, to make it a fair comparison?
what do you think is better for absolute audio quality between these and the Beoplay EQ? I have the latter and they're still going strong so I was wondering whether this would be an upgrade or a downgrade.
Any Bang and Olufsen is going to have the best sound. The Beoplay EX, sound wise destroys every TWS, IMO.
Can we use XM5 buds independently?
Great review thank's
I have airport pro 2 and just under 2 years I have cracking noise coming from one side.I think I will try Sony this time.
I like SONY's compack size rather than Airpod's Stem.
But, I really don't like that SONY don't allow to change the controlling option,
Just as Soundcore App & also many other earbuds.
I find that AWFUL in terms of consumer comfort.
Loved the shirt with stripes,
Following the sweet colour...
🙂
Were the song tests on both earphones done connected to iPhone? Thinking of getting the XM5s but I know some earphones do better connected to android phones than iPhones.
I believe so ye cause people with androids had a little better results
and vice versa. I found the AirPods Pro 2 to sound significantly better on iOS due to their adaptive EQ feature. Same song through Apple Music on a Pixel 7 Pro just sounded... boring? in comparison. Even took me some time to figure out why it was happening.
Great video btw in the thumbnail you show airpods pro 1 not 2
No mention at all of Dolby Atmos/Spatial audio?
After so many bad experiences with the XM4's I just made a promise to myself to not buy anything Sony again.
welcome to the club, I ditched Sony around 10 years ago. Not buying anything from them ever again either!
I have a healthy amount of skepticism about your claims "AirPods blew the Sony's out of the water". Sony is miles ahead in terms of both ANC and sound quality.
@@PvtAnonymous I have the same opinion about everything Apple
@@vitalkhlebnikov depends on the model. I for example would never buy their basshead-style WH-100XM4 or XM5s. They dropped the professional audio market in the west quite a few years ago and only release good headphones in Japan.
I had the same problem and not buying sony products anymore.
Hi Mike. Sony Vs B&O EQ please
What's wrong with Bose and sony? The top in ears of them, got bad microphones. For this price....no way.
Air pods still the best choice for Office
@@hanschenklein7990 nope
don't buy into that AAC LDAC stuff bluetooth can't play hires audio period.. tbh i'm look'ing forward to try the new sonys out.
BILLY STRINGS is one of the greatest living guitar players in this Era 👏. Highly recommend listening to him on either one of these comparisons. 😊
Got to say that Sony aswell has one Feature in the App where the Headphones Play a loud Sound so you can find them. However that does ofcours only Work when you already are near them
What's up with the Sony Mic? It's cracking....
what about the adaptive noise canceling for the mic on airpods pro2?
Was LDAC testet on Android? iPhones does not Support ldac
Sony's mic on XM3-5 seems to not up to par with the price they charge for it. I am surprise by the way Sony seems to still struggle with this.
One reason to buy non-Apple for iPhone users is, out of principle, not buying bluetooth earbuds from the phone manufacturer that removed the headphone jack.
The extra 50$ kinda negates the points for the extra features.
@mikeobrienmedia On Multipoint connectivity I have question for XM5. Say you have connected 2 devices, iPhone and MacBook, and you had paired with iPad as well and wanted to use in iPad while other 2 devices are On. Is it possible directly or need to turn off one of the devices?
Turn off one
sony gets updates like every month i bet the mic will get better over time
Mic isn't bad as Apple fanboys day it's usable anyway who makes calls with earbuds or headphones 😂
I’m buying ear buds today and needed to see some differences between these two. My choice is also the Sony. Thanks so much for sharing this video!❤
Very nice video. The Sony Microphone in the test was bad. Therefore not worth the $299.
It's worth 300. Although it was a good video the mic sounds different in each person's video. There was one guy who denied sponsorship and did a free review on it. Was labeled a 9 for mic and wasn't static
Definitely worth the 300 lol
@@pugondabox yep,
@christopherjimenez5095 some people ended up with faulty xm5s that they reviewed has had mic problems I don't have the issue
@@jessiestarr4600 that's double bad if Sony can't even keep up their QC and sends out review units that are DOA. Something like this should never happen.
Mike what do you say by comparing WF-1000XM5 vs Pixel Buds Pro :)
I have the wm-1000XM5 and I think you have defective units because the microphone of your sony does not sound normal at all. I don't have such distiortion from the microphone.
For me the most important thing is always the transparency modes. So personally I would go for AirPods
