Dearest Ting and Sweet Stuart;
I only change my needle when it breaks.
XO
Judith
Ha ha, same as me.
Good for you Judith, me too! Ting x
What? Oh my.....why not treat your machine during the sewing bee and put a new one in! hahah
I change my needle when my machine protests 😂😂
Me too, 😃 but I usually just stick with the universal needle.
I was sad to see Comfort go. I was excited to see what she could come up with with her architecture background.
Brilliant use of the pen start ! I totally agree give the sewers a sensible amount of time and let them show us their good sewing skills and properly judge them on their (hopefully) beautifully finished garments ( although having said that they all did much better this week ).thankyou again for your comments - love it
Just discovered this excellent wish I had found it before excellent
Aww thank your Louise, welcome along and hope you enjoy the conversations over the coming weeks!
Echoing Ting about want to see good sewing. It feels like they've started this season off leaning into the design aspect more than the skills. I want to know who the best sewists are first, then see how their design skills are challenged. But they've instead gone to pattern challenges in much less time allotted, which only leads to cutting corners and mistakes. Let them be successful the first couple of weeks! The Made to Measure is where they can show their creativity. Although, unless you are designing for some of the more flamboyant athletes (Serena Williams, etc), whose sports uniform is going to be stylish more than functional?
Thank you again for your dedication to produce Unpicked and All Gathered Up.
Love watching them alongside the GBSB. 👏👏
I would have made a Robin Hood outfit in Union Jack fabric - Archery!!
I thoroughly enjoy your follow up show....I like the way you do it with pics - I watch other sewing you tubers talking about it but I struggle to remember who's who and whats what - especially at the beginning cos they dont bother editing in pics. Many thanks keep it up! x
It must be very frustrating for the contestants since the judging seems to be very inconsistent. At least from a viewers perspective. For the Olympics I always think of the opening ceremonies when the teams walk in with their matching tracksuits. Enjoyed your unpicking😊
Loving this ! I enjoy both of your comments and humor❤
Aww cheers Susan, It's all Ting, I just turn up haha
Nicely said - a good thing to show the skills in a time scale that makes sense
Week 2 - sports week! Lots of highs and lows this episode and Marcus sure did take us on a ride too going from Top of the league to bottom within 15 minutes! If you want more info on specific sewing machine needles, then take a look at my special playlist. Using the right style needle can be a game changer for sure in the results and success of your sewing. ua-cam.com/play/PLCOrlMmCOH8GQ38rf3Oav4YydDZbNgFDp.html
The original skirt challenge on episode one, series one was 3 and a half hours, NOT five. I did confirm this in the comments of episode one! 😊
The timing allocation seemed more reasonable for the fleece. Marcus came first but he hadn't finished the back hem of his fleece and it wasn't mentioned. He had done a good job though and using a piece of everyone's fabric was inspired.
I did notice that in the last challenge quite a few of them were sewing stretch close fitting garments on a normal sewing machine. Janet? A bit of moving about and the stitches would have popped.
Yes, I agree with Ting, the transformation challenge has had its day. Think it is only in there to keep Esme, with her design background, happy. Never anything wearable produced. I can usually pick the front 3 contenders out by now but not this year. Asmaa was outstanding last year.
Ironically, I had to explain to younger colleagues at work this week what C&A was, and it wasn't sewing bee related! Spooky 🙂 I wish I'd found this youtube channel whilst watching previous series. Keep up the good work.
Hi Stuart,
Just wanted to say I loved your series of informative sewing machine needle videos. I also learnt recently that sewists who do alot of embroidery also favour the topstitch needle as it can be used for general sewing, metallic threads and embroidery.
Did you know that titanium coated sewing machine needles last alot longer due to the strength imparted by the titanium?
Aww thanks Sue. I didn't know about the Titanium....oh no, now I need to go buy more hahaha.
Hello :)
The fact that the Transformation challenge was based on a Central St Martins course assignment, for me shows just how detached and irrelevant the challenge is from the show's audience and the contestants perspective. I don't understand how the show promos sustainability values, yet wastes these garments. That's the 3rd slipper of the series so far, thrown.
I was worried about Alex, as the show's previous 2 contestants with the same name both went out in round 2 - so she broke the Alex curse! Very sorry to see Comfort go, she had a lot of potential and I don't think she was given the chance to shine.
Marcus seems to be the one to watch, he doesn't follow the rules, and thinks outside the box. Although he won the pattern challenge, he didn't finish and I don't think one of his sleeves was inserted correctly. But I loved the idea of using pieces of all the contestants fabrics - combining the concepts of sustainability and team work all in one top. However, I'm concerned that he is being judged solely on his 'avant garde' ideas, rather than the quality of his sewing skills.
Have a great week, all the best :)
If we're worrying about Alex because of her name, spare a thought for Pascha with a P and Suzy with an S. They're up against the second-half-of-the-alphabet curse, which only Serena with an S has withstood. 😉
On a positive note - so glad there's a new presenter! Hope he's allowed to stay
The editing drives me mad!! I remember years ago when chello was a contestants, she made a waistcoat which had 10 buttons and buttonholes and with ten minutes to go she managed to finish. Very interesting editing!!
Wish they had a black mannequin to show off the outfits made in the transformation challenge. It was so hard to see!
I think the Jamaican outfit was my favourite
It was a fab one wasn't it.
Another great review. I agree with you, I don't think the sewers are given enough time to complete the pattern challenge. Working with fleece can be frustrating, as it's quite bulky and can be stretchy. I usually use a stretch needle and a narrow zigzag stitch. I feel that the sewers are being set up to fail 😕. I would make a crop top and shorts for beach volleyball, nice and easy!
Here's a connection from an Olympic sport to a country via fabric.
I've just learnt that official judo attire can be either white or blue.
I'd go for blue.
Blue denim.
Double denim.
The Canadian tuxedo.
Well, totally this! Brilliant
Exactly! He was stitching when the whistle went... suspicious...
The _only_ thing I liked about the transformation challenge was that all the contestants had the same colour and same garments. I like the idea that everyone starts from the same level. I think Marcus should have used the padding to make the ears stand up.
It still feels like early days, it's hard to see people's actual sewing skills. I remember from previous series that we had more close up shots of people sewing, or we saw things like the coverstitch machine close up. That's what I miss.
I still think the program should be on BBC 2, not BBC 1.
I loved the sparkly leotard, and if I had the skill, I'd love to make an all in one unitard that some gymnasts are wearing.
The pen! I’d forgotten about the pen 🖊️
haha think many did, but it's back!
Speedos and a dressing gown - you crack me up! Totally agree with Ting about cutting up brand new clothes. It made me chuck a recycled slipper at the screen! That whole challenge is stupid. I buy a lot of pre-loved clothes and it’s really hard to alter them to fit me. They could easily make this whole section more appropriate by using that kind of challenge. Also agree about BG - we are laughing about Bulgaria etc. Stuart’s face about the drawing! That “oohhh” was so sad I just wanted to hug you x
Look at you chucking recycled Slippers, Green Blue Peter badge for you 😆. As for those concept drawings...still hurts haha
As a runner I can tell you that seersucker is guaranteed to give you chub rub. If you have to ask you haven’t run a long enough distance 😂
😂😂😂
Regarding the "jacket" from Marcus in the pattern challenge: Didn´t they notice that he put one sleeve in backwards? Although I liked the jacket, but hem not finished and sleeve wrong???
Sports week did show a better skill level and I felt the fleece top was a good challenge. I agree with Ting the transformation challenge should not use new garments to chop up but I did think think they all made a decent job of transforming them, apart from Marcus not sure what that was! I thought Georgie deserved to win garment if the week. Good review again I think the BBC should commission you two for the after show comment programme.
I really liked laurens leotard, great sewing using a tricky fabric but not a great fit sadly
That’s a new challenge, make a garment from chamois leathers 😂😂😂
Man at C &A 😅😅😅😅😅
😉
I'm wondering after last years group of contestants, whereas some were obviously more accomplished than others from the get go, that this year's grouping has the sewers on a much more level playing field in abilities. Skills will develop and eventually some will start to shine I'm sure, but right now it looks to me like an even match all around. This is anyone's game.
Yes, very much so, good point
I watched! I would love to also see the show. I loved the Jamaican outfit and the winning garment in particular. What does the winner receive? Are they looking to be recognized by the fashion industry or monetary prize.........??? Are the contestants completely amateur? I agree with you about the time aspect to see completed garments. I would be more impressed.
The sewists are amateurs, but many of them have been able to spin the experience into sewing-adjacent careers after appearing on the show. I don't think there's a monetary prize.
Thank you. We don’t get the program here. I used to watch something similar but not working from a specific pattern ever. The contestants were looking to start their own brand. I watch this because I get a kick out of Stuart! Hahaha He makes me laugh!
Cover stitch machine!! I don't have one (do I need one??!) and I really would have loved for them to show more - definitely a missed opportunity! Ting, I can't believe you don't change your needle!! I even change my needle regularly on my overlocker. I usually change every two projects, but I put a 'label' on my machine so I know exactly which needle it has in it. Then I know if it is suitable for the next project!
I recently stumbled across a very good video about cover stitch machines, by Liz Grylls (GBSB series 6 semifinalist), who has her own youtube channel. She concentrated on showing what the machine can achieve on an actual garment.
How about an ice dancing outfit?
I didn't really enjoy this episode but I did love Don's skirt.
I felt a lot of imperfections were totally overlooked but I do think the transformation challenge has been so much more interesting so far . Im.not sure why Marcus made the balaclava, I think he put himself on the back foot after such a great fleece
Agreed - those shoulder straps are not right
Leigh Bovery...
Agree - those letters are wrong for GB
I was very surprised when Comfort got knocked out. It seemed like a totally random decision
Random?! She was bottom in the previous two challenges and her final outfit was full of mistakes
They're given all they need, but they don't know there's different needles / interfacings, etc
You two make me laugh. I like your analysis and fully agree with Ting that the transformation challenge is very wasteful and not at all useful for the sewing audience. Regarding Alex and her use of seersucker fabric for marathon shorts! What!! She claims that she ran marathons but I am not sure as she would know about chafing!! That fabric doesn’t stretch or move very well during the exercises or a long run when you sweat buckets and everything start to cling to the body!!
I'd forgotten about the pen as well
haha it's BACK!
I think the appearance of inconsistent judging may be due to editing.
Balaclava thing - don't try and justify that thing from a slasher film.
The earlier seasons definitely highlighted the contestants' skills better skills. I prefer to see well-made, finished garments and, you're right, Stuart, more talent being celebrated. It makes the show more interesting and encourages the non-sewers in the audience to give it a go.
Tossing a big, fuzzy slipper at this episode. Judging felt all over the place. I'm over Esme with her silly color and big bows biases.
I was sad to see those beautiful pristine cricket whites cut up for a mostly awful transformations. I would have made a Basque pelota outfit just because I think it's a cool name for an olympic sport.
I couldn’t understand why Marcus didn’t use the union flag in the front of tee!
I love hearing your take on the Sewing Bee. I said “ Oh no” out loud when the cricket whites were revealed. Such a terrible waste!! The judging seems to be getting worse each series. Time for someone new?
Updated Question...I'm reading the US press. Folks here are pretty mad (along with all of you) about the impossible challenges v time allotment.
The programs...project runway seasons..are all filmed months before they are aired.
Yes, lots of discussion as always is going on about timings for rounds, but don't think it will ever change. And welcome to being a shop supporter too Judith! Lovely to have you as a member!
Alex has probably made a lot of these garments with jersey in the past - you can see by the seams - they are not puckered at all. You can make garments really quickly on an overlocker if you know what you are doing. If you don't - it's a bit scary. Likewise the coverstitch - those who have used them before are a distinct advantage. Poor Dom said he was going to zig zag and not bother with a machine he's never used before and probably never will. I do think the sewers are not listening and the judging not really insightful...
I thought that, on the whole, the contestants did really well this week. Some great sews on the made to measure 👍🏻🧵🪡
The garmeny of the week was goo. Had real impact in the style but top was a little small.
The judging/editing is inconsistent. It was obvious who was going to be in bottom from first challenge. At least Marcus is keeping us entertained 😅
Love Productions are making what they think is good, not what's actually good
Brown makes me feel unwell...
Entertainment v Technical. If it was just based on technical would we loose the design element of the show?
Tough one. Remember last year Matthew was very design based but was eliminated for poor sewing. So maybe skills will be later on in the show!
Wonderful point and comment. Yes
I was disappointed to see Comfort go. I thought others made more of a mess of their makes. I also felt she showed promise for improvement as the series went on 😢
I have to throw a slipper at Ting today because his audio was barely audible compared to Stuart in this video.
Oh no really? Thanks for letting me know, I wonder what happened there as he was nice and loud in my ear. I’ll look into it so it’s right for next week 👍🏼👍🏼
It was ok for me!?
Chiffon needle won't work on leather....
Completely agree about the lack of any obvious front-runners this time, and also about the hopelessness of the transformation challenge. One odd thing I noticed was that in the M2M challenge, Janet's outfit wasn't attached to any particular country and despite the fact that this was part of the brief, nobody mentioned it ... at all. Given that her choice was for yellow and blue I wonder if she intended to represent Ukraine. But why the Beeb wouldn't want to mention that eludes me (it's not particularly contentious, politically speaking).
Janet did say that she was making an outfit representing Ukraine.
@@carolinedelisle589 Ah right, I completely missed that. Weird that they didn't include that on the illustration caption, or even mention it again.
The transformation challenge frustrates me more each week. Why would you take some perfectly good cricket garments and turn them into something completely unwearable?
Can I throw a slipper?
You sure can hahaha.
What's happened to Anya?
She’s now a mother! Little one born in January - all are doing well!
@@TheWoolpatch Ahh, that's wonderful. Sending them best wishes. 🤗
Agh I’m getting so fed up with the inconsistent judging criteria 😡 just because you like the colours doesn’t mean the sewing is good!! I’m beginning to think they have picked their finalists before the competition even begins 🤔 You only have to look at what they say they’re looking for versus what they get and put at the top half of the rankings overlooking unfinished work etc. I just haven’t got enough slippers 😫
As for using brand new cricket whites……🤬
On a lighter note… I dare Stuart to dig out his Man at C&A shell-suit jacket to wear on next week’s show 😂😂
We may need to set up a slipper making factory hahah, think of all that employment haha. As for my C&A Jacket, sadly that's long gone. I'll have to see if I have any old pics thought...now that would be a giggle!
Why destroy the new cricket whites? Transformation should be something that isn't being worn...
I think the sewists should know about needles that may be needed for different fabrics - even if they never change a needle unless it breaks. I know it is entertainment, but honestly....
I dislike the mid section of ruining perfectly good garments to make something that no one would wear - whether or not it is avant-garde is beside the point - none of it was innovation, and the idea is that it is meant to be wearable no? I hate the waste.
MTM - how can you go wrong with fit with all stretchy fabric.
I want to see good sewing. The very early programmes/series had very good sewists. I am losing faith I'm afraid. New experts too? Mk 2 Patrick and Esme perhaps?
I preferred the earlier series with Patrick and May Martin.
@@monicas2269 Yes!! May Martin was wonderful, could not remember her name.
@@marieeaton-smith5168 I had to google her because I wasn't sure of her name either.
How on earth do you manage to win a pattern challenge when you dont finish?????? And why people deviate from the pattern on a pattern challenge is beyond me!!!!
Ruin new... Make and mend... It's Love Productions 'ideas"...
I’m not a great lover of Sports week , so this week didn’t rock my boat and yes Ting all new cricket gear to ruin, Patrick is always banging on about about sustainability, so 🫤That’s a bit of a contradiction!!!
Anyway, I’m watching Georgie, Suzy and Pasha! Debra was my favourite last year Ting and I’m still following her on Instagram. 😃😃😘
