It’s very sad to see vast housing estates on the perimeter of towns where all the houses are mock georgian and mock victorian, but smaller (of course). I don’t think there’s much “architecting” going on with such buildings. Such housing estates have no community assets such as shopping centres, community centres, transport hubs, doctors surgeries, youth clubs, playgrounds, sports facilities etc. They’re just satellite commuter banks.
Meanwhile millions of properties within our crumbling towns and cities go empty or under-occupied. We need to stop building so many poor clones from previous styles and start to allow much more individualism in design. It would cost more money though. And planning departments are wedded to something called “the regional vernacular”. Which usually means that we end up with endless rows of mock georgian and mock tudor boxes.
I’d love to live in something bright and modern and individual (not cloned) that’s carbon neutral, with perfect insulation, green energy and enough land to grow my own food. No one is building (or allowing the building of) that kind of home or estate, which average people can afford - not in my county, at least.

King Charles described many buildings as monstrous carbuncles many years ago, prior to mass immigration.
My opinion is that many British and European cities are uglier because of post WW2 rebuilding, and also because of cheaper, quicker modern building techniques.

I'm an agnostic architect who agrees that cities have become uglier. However, I don't believe this is due to them becoming less Christian. Tom Holland (the author, not Spiderman) puts forward a strong case suggesting that all Western moral causes, especially the secular ones in the 20th and 21st centuries, are deeply rooted in Christian beliefs about equality, feeding the poor, treating others how you want to be treated, etc. (Look up his book 'Dominion').
Modernism and post-war architecture were all about form over function. Essentially, they were looking at new, efficient ways of providing housing for all. Le Corbusier was dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities.
If Jesus could choose between a few beautiful, fancy houses or 10 times the amount that the poor could afford, you know which one he'd choose.
