  • MLS vs. Premier League Goalkeeper Battle | Who Won? 🤔 You Decide! | AGRESSIVE VS. COMPOSED
    What's up guys. So, this is a technical breakdown of a very similar play. One of which is from Édouard Mendy of Chelsea FC, and the other by myself. I believe it really highlights the glaring differences in how Premier league goalkeepers, and MLS goalkeepers, react to "perceived" 1 vs 1 scenarios.

    Did this title annoy anyone else? First of all, have you ever played in the MLS? Cause all of these clips seem to be from the USL. Secondly it comes off as pretty arrogant to make it look like you actually beat out an EPL keeper in some sort on contest. Because if you ask me who won I'm gonna say the goalkeeper who starts in the EPL because he's in the freaking EPL. Also, it seems you are completely just ignoring the skill difference between EPL and USL strikers. Not saying USL players are bad or anything but the difference in skill is huge between the two.
    If you pause at 0:13 seconds your near post is wide open and I have a hard time believing an EPL level striker wouldn't easily tuck that away 9/10. I think you really just got bailed out by the striker making the completely wrong choice of shooting across your body. Which I get is your point of being patient forcing the striker to make the right decision. But I think it's a huge overlook that guys at the top top level are much more likely to make that right decision than someone at the USL level.

      No sir, however, I’ve been to preseason with the Columbus crew, and have trained with the San Jose Earthquakes, FC Cincinnati, St. Pauli, and Swansea City. I’ve also played with, and against numerous EPL players (Joe Cole, Tammy Abraham, ect).
      Additionally, the two players involved in the clip are both active MLS players (Jared Stroud and Tom Barlow), with the remaining 2/3 of the squad in that game also on MLS deals. I also understand the confusion, the title and thumbnail are very clickbait-ey. I’m still a young channel and am learning as I go.
      I’m sorry you feel this was arrogant, as I explained in the video this was more an educational breakdown trying to compare very similar plays where two different actions were taken by two different types of goalkeepers (American/MLS style vs English/EPL style). The result of those actions led to two very different outcomes, one where I was successful and Mendy wasn’t.
      Im not here to argue wether I’m better than a premier league keeper, being a young American making his own unique path, I’ll leave that up to the managers that pay us. But I will mention the fact that I’m 2/2 in shut outs against West Ham United and Swansea in international friendlies. I’m not sure if I would have saved that breakaway from Bamford, yet I definitely had/have the impression that there is something to be learned from both plays and that was the entire point of dropping this video. Hope that clarifies, all the best.

      @@AmericanProfessional1 I just think you shouldn't be misleading even in titles / thumbnails especially when the vast majority of your success so far has been reacting to someone else calling out Modern Goalkeeping for doing a similar thing. Not saying you are just like Mike cause you have actually singed pro but something to think about.
      Also, friendlies really aren't a place to gauge someones level. The intensity and pressure just doesn't compare to actual league games. 2/2 shutouts in those games is cool but conceding 11 goals in 6 games in the USL while having one of the stronger defenses in the league gives a much more accurate impression.

      Only because I happened to notice how similar the play was to my own. Also, after some discussion, I’d alter my original assessment and argue that his aggressive nature is more a result of his Senegalese and French background rather than Prem experience. I guess the EPL goalkeepers have the fear of relegation that messes up with their minds and they end up being much more active than actually needed. but without the pressure of relegation MLS goalkeepers keep their cool and end up only doing necessary things needed to do. but also it may be the other way round since EPL is more competitive and there are much stronger teams they may have to not rely on their teammates but in MLS there are not many of MLS team that is at the level of EPL teams (sorry for bad grammar)

      @AmericanProfessional1  3 роки тому +3

      No worries, I go the jist of what you said. An interesting take from you. I won’t disagree as I think the level of play and league does have a lot to do with how goalkeepers play, however, I would point out that despite the lack of promotion/relegation in the us that competition for goalkeepers in the MLS is exceedingly tough. We are known for producing high level goalkeepers and just because you’re starting for a top flight team doesn’t mean there is no pressure to perform day in and day out. I think one of the best things that a goalkeeper can have is good decision making when in-game, as it takes the uneasiness and ambivalence out of any decision. I’ve really tried hard to work on committing to any decision I make instead of constantly second-guessing myself. Also, after reading some of the comments, while some of the criticism can be warranted, a lot of it shouldn’t be levied. First of all, Mendy (and other top level goalkeepers) are most likely under far more pressure to perform well, especially at a big club with the media hawking them constantly. This will, inexorably, make any mistake more prominent, and once everyone criticizes you, you begin to believe it. So, with more people constantly remarking about one bad error, you’ll begin to doubt yourself more and more. Ultimately, football is about a lot more than what’s on the field. (Edit: I should have prefaced this by saying the ability to deal with this is one of the factors that qualifies players to go professional in the first place.)

    • @AmericanProfessional1
      @AmericanProfessional1  3 роки тому +1

      I think your take is pretty spot on. I’ve always said goalkeeping is 10% physical 90% mental. And that’s a good point, the pressure to win in the US is not near as high as in European leagues and the biggest factor for that, I think, is the lack of promotion/relegation. When you’re at a big club making $$$ in the US there really isn’t much else to shoot for besides a championship playoff win. Thanks for your perspective my friend. All the best.

    I have noticed it too! The problem with this technique is that it needs loads of experience and good decision making. In your clips the composure was such that I would use it in coaching....Doing the right thing at the right time. The examples I gave were horrible recently in EPL. Leno shocked me the most. Just my first take.....I believe, German, Dutch, Belgian, Danish (might be a regional thing) goalies tend to make better decisions that are not very flashy. Pfaff and Schumacher made me want to play goal, watching them in the 86 World Cup. Great decision makers who were typically conservative in those situations. Kahn as well....Neuer being a German kind of breaks the mold a bit IMO. German goalies weren’t usually good with their feet, till he came along and changed the game, almost literally.
    I feel like Spanish and South/Latin American goalies are flashier, (thinking Allison and Rene Higuita, Jorge Campos).
    I view Italian in the middle.....and English goalies as laughable 😜

      @@AmericanProfessional1 I’ll add that being American and seeing Keller and Freidel growing up, even Meola as a fell New Jerseyan....made me see that we could be the best goalkeepers in the world.
      You started your video saying American keepers are more conservative.....I agree. We have always had good keepers, IMO, due to pure athleticism. Singular athleticism is different coach then coaching field players, what USA has struggled with.....but USA can take an athletic dude, like Tim Howard, and make them world class. Been that way my whole life, USA goalies not flashy, just skilled and get the job done.
      I always liked Keller the best and feel like he did not get enough national team love....but with that group of goalies it was hard to separate yourself.

    I like staying back, like you said, if a defender is able to apply pressure. Allison made a similar mistake recently when he almost collided with TAA against Leicester. Obviously, Neuer is the best decision maker in the history of the game in these situations. Leno hilariously got aggressive a couple weeks ago when he got his red card vs Wolves. In that situation there was NO NEED for him to be aggressive and come out of the box.
    IMO the proclivity to be aggressive is more closely correlated to nationality then league. Saying EPL keepers are too aggressive lacks context of those specific keepers. Allison is aggressive, Mignolet was not :) Pickford is stupid, Joe Hart is conservative.....I just feel the league is irrelevant, but I like the idea you are promoting of waiting when a defender is still in play.

    • @AmericanProfessional1

      Technically you are correct, my clip was from a usl league match, however, Jared Stroud and Tom Barlow, the two players involved in this play, and nearly 2/3 of the squad in this game are active MLS players. Definitely stretching the title and thumbnail but hopefully I can be forgiven.
      With that said, I think your perspective is actually more accurate than my own. Mendy likely didn’t have time to develop a more aggressive style as he’s very new to the Prem. So his style of play is absolutely more likely to be a result of his French and Senegalese background in goalkeeping.

      Hey my friend. And you have a right to your opinion brother. As someone who has trained with, played against, and is decent friends with quite a few top players in the premier league (Tammy Abraham’s, Dimitri Payet, Wayne Rooney, Joe Cole ect) I respectfully disagree. The striker who “flubbed” his shot is Tom Barlow, who also plays top flight football and is actually worth more monetarily than Bamford was at the same age (Bamford only recently began starting/getting regular playing time in the Prem). I think it’s unfortunate so many people are quick to condemn any kind of comparison between any league/play and the Prem. I think that is very closed minded and holds very little weight when it comes to actually determining a great goalkeeper. A fantastic example is Emi Martinez. He was largely written off as an older goalkeeper that was only valued as a back up. Now he’s arguably the most consistent and highly rated goalkeeper in the Prem in one year. Not only that, but Mendy himself was without a team and eating out of a soup kitchen at the same time I was playing against premier league teams (2016). As a result of this, I thought it was interesting to breakdown the clip that I did in order to show how my style of play does exactly that, causes high level strikers to “flub” their shots and give you as the goalkeeper a better chance. I’d encourage you to look further into the topic as I feel we actually have similar opinions, you’re just missing a few key aspects. All the best and hope that helps clarify.

    I can definitely understand where you are coming from by not trying to say you are better than Mendy but I do also have to agree that this video does come off as extremely arrogant. No hate to you at all though, love the content keep it up!

      Everyone has a right to their own opinion my friend. However, with the comedy of errors going on in the Prem right now I don’t think it’s too far off to be critical of some of these “high level” goalkeepers. For example, Kepa is technically the most valuable goalkeeper in history, but I think most of us would agree that he probably doesn’t deserve to even be on a 2nd division club at this point with the numbers he put up his first season at Chelsea. Guys like Emi Martinez were wrote off for years and are now trailblazing a path for themselves by doing things differently. All about perspective I think, I believe I can back up my words, and have succeeded against EPL strikers in the past, so I’ll stick to my guns here. Thanks for the comment and support.

      @@AmericanProfessional1 👍that’s awesome, i definitely think tho that they are there for a reason at the top level tho and the keepers here are not there because they are higher level. I’ll definitely be following your journey and wish you nothing but the best in your career i enjoy the content a lot

      @@AmericanProfessional1 It's not the critical part that's rubbing people the wrong way, it's that you're acting like you're at the EPL level with no track record to back that up. You keep bringing up how you played these two friendlies against EPL clubs. But are you not going to mention the only reason you even played in those games is because you were the #3 option at North Carolina? You also continuously ignore that friendlies and actual league games aren't comparable in the slightest. If I was in your position I would be trying to figure out why you haven't been able to get many USL starts and why when playing you're having trouble keeping the ball out of the net. But instead you seem to be living in some fantasy that you could compete in the EPL or are going to get a US National Team call up. Can't take those big steps by just skipping all of the small ones.

      ATL is on the radar. I’m being very patient with negotiations this year. Need to make sure I set myself, and fiancé ,up for the future, especially with all the craziness going on with the pandemic. Excited to see what the future holds. Thanks for the comment friend.
