If making coffee is your number 1 hobby and you're going to use it for life, you should buy the best as early as possible. You will make use of it, and you'll eventually get your money's worth. You'll have pride using it every day with zero gear envy, and it'll give you joy. Much better than obsessing about it for 10 years, and spending thousands of hours daydreaming and reading reviews about it. In reality, it's not that expensive compared to a new car. Just buy a used car like a 5 year old Toyota that's going to last you 10 years, and with the $20-30k you saved, you can buy the best of the best for all your top hobbies.
Yo Lee is a beast for shipping the Eg1 to you and allowing you to use it for two months. It would take some heavy heavy convincing to have mine out of the house for any appreciable time. Good review man.
Thankyou Micheal for testing out burrs on both burrs, specifically with 3 years of experience of EK old burrrs. I appreciate viewers supporting him by lending their expensive equipment too! Waiting eagerly for your next video
@@michael_j_fabian you are talking about alignment or chamber access or both? And what is your experience with burr alignment on these high level grinders. Is Eg-1 better aligned then other high end grinders, or that is not an issue on this type of grinders? BTW I do not have this grinder, this is just opinion on their marketing, few videos and my experience with my cheap eureka mignon specialita :)
I think there are many better options for that price, for two grinders even, the Niche is precisely the kind of fallacy he's talking about around the 7min mark. Its better suited for classic espresso and not so much filter. I do think it's overpriced. I myself have opted for a Jx-Pro for classic espresso and a DF64 with multi purpose burrs for filter, and to also test lighter allonge style espresso. I'll have more flexibility with having both and still comes out to less than what some people have payed for a Niche. If I hate the DF64 burr I still have the option of swapping them out, plus I've heard user reports that the JX-Pro tastes just like the Niche but at a fraction of the cost.
Have you tried the Monolith flat with shuriken LM burrs I thought it did very well for coarser brew methods. I tested with aeropress using a finer than filter grind size. Same with Weber key and I assume related 83mm mazzer conical grinders I was surprised it does pretty well for aeropress.
Still regret that day walking into William Sonoma and had that snake saleswoman sold the wifey on how convenient the Jura super automatic is. Now I can't upgrade any coffee gear, because she points at that and said, why would you want to do all that when this baby does it all for you?
Using the burrs from Mazzer’s Robur espresso grinder, the Key will not keep up with the performance of grinders designed with burrs meant for filter coffee brewing (eg. the ultra burrs for the EG-1)
@@michael_j_fabian, thank you for the response! I currently have a Monolith Flat (upgraded to Shuriken LM) but I would like to optimize for filter. Looks like my best options are waiting on the Shuriken Coarse burrs or possibly jumping ship to the EG-1 with ultra if/when those become available again...
@@0bjectiveCat I thought the Monolith flat with 75mm shuriken LM burrs were really good multipurpose burrs. I think it works really well for aeropress using a finer than regular drip grind size (just how I like my aeropress, I also do it pretty concentrated) the Weber key was also surprisingly good. Sometimes better sometimes worse than monolith or p64 with ssp unimodal burrs. But that also could be due to me not getting the grind size exactly the same on each grinder.
@@BensCoffeeRants Nice! I've dialed in my Flat with LM burrs pretty well for pour-over since I wrote that comment, but I still went ahead and pre-ordered the Max with Coarse burrs (April delivery). Can't wait to compare them side-by-side!
I've been playing with the SSP HU and LU burrs, but Michael and others recommend the pre-2015 EK43 burrs for filter coffee (which is my interest). I haven't been able to find any yet
I have a friend who is buying an Ultra Levercraft. They are buying 98mm SSP burrs, sending it to Titus to regrind to the pre 2015 EK geometry, and sending back to Ultra to recoat. It'll be about $600. They are getting the Utlra v. EG-1 due to alignment capabilities and consistent RPM according to them.
No, not really. There are grinders with a lot less pain and issues at a much lower price point, case in point Lagom P100. What you buy into is WW fanboyism, nothing more nothing less. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s a decent grinder, just not $4000 decent. My view anyway.
wait... you don’t believe in dual purpose grinders? (or multiple) that means one machine can just grind one type of coffee. and for an other type it has to be a different (built) machine? how are they so different to each other, that it can not be combined in one machine?

Michael thank you for the EG-1 review. I enjoy the passion and intelligence you bring and share.
How do you feel this compares to the Kafatek MC4 for espresso with the CORE burrs?
This grinder is ingenious. I really like the way they solved burr alignment and burr chamber access
If only it lived up to everyone's assumptions, I think it's BS-- great marketing though!

@@michael_j_fabian What are you referring to?
@@michael_j_fabian is the alignment access that bad on it?
So what’s the best espresso only grinder then that money can buy?
Would it be fair to say that it's not necessarily that one grinder cannot do both espresso and drip, but rather one burr set cannot do both?
Would you still place the Verslab M3/M4 at the top of your espresso grinder list today?
I am interesting do you ever compare with ssp 98 LU burrs with this burrs ?
4:56 and here I thought it was about tasting the coffee...
How about the alignment. Does it need to be aligned manually like other grinders?
Missed your videos!! Welcome back.
Really appreciate your informative videos! How would you compare the EG-1 and the lab sweet only for filter?
I would also love to hear this! I'd also like to hear which of these two would be better as the dreaded dual purpose machine...
You briefly mention Forte here. What's your opinion on it?
Got in on a Monolith Max preorder. Any suggestions for the burr set? Espresso only
Shuriken sweet obv
Just when I managed to hold myself back though the last round of Kafatek pre-orders...
To what extent would you say the Niche Zero works well as a dual purpose grinder when considering the price point?
