Sorry for my lack of knowledge but if one buys one of these units does it automatically decrypt the P25 phase II signals? Or does one need to tinker with it or get a code to get it to decypt the transmissions? Or was this channel not encrypted to begin with?
Dee Lee These channels were not encrypted to begin with as you say at the end there. My county's Sheriff's Office however is encrypted and cannot be decoded. I just lock out those talkgroups.
I found this out the hard way. Bought a BCD325P2 and only heard garbled transmissions. Couldn't even hear ambulance calls. Come to find out my whole county is encrypted!! Had to return the scanner or use it for a paper weight. Heartbreaking to say the least, I have been scanning my county for 40 years and now they go encrypted!!
Dee Lee - P25 Phase II is Digital and is open to everyone with a Digital Receiver......unless the Encrypt. then you are out of luck as there in NO current way to Decrypt a Encrypted signal.
john - many agency also maintain Conventional system as a back up in case Digital fails. and NOT every agency will Encrypt , they may not even use Digital like the Highway Patrol as they need LONG Distance communications. my area Still uses HF for the HP.
Does the Spectrum Sweeper work well and is it easy to use ? I've heard that it can be used like the 'Stalker' and 'Close Call' features used by other scanners. Has anyone done this ? Feedback requested - Thanks
Carpenter Family I personally haven't made much use of that feature but it is easy to use nonetheless. Yes it is the same as the "close call" and"signal stalker" feature in other radio brands where it quickly scans bands of frequencies and stopping at very strong signals. Perhaps others with more experience using it will chime in.
NO, you cant really call it a Spectrum Sweeper. its a Glorified SEARCH bank. on the other hand a Real Spectrum sweeper like the Optoelectronics Digital Scout can INSTANIOUSLY capture Analog or Digital frequencies as soon as ANYONE keys up. and it can Automatically log the Frequency, any TONE codes, the Transmitted Power, and the Type of Transmission/Digital Mode. the Whistler and Uniden Spectrum Sweeper are Extremely Slow compared to the Digital Scout. they have to SEARCH the Range set by the user and its very limited in Speed and Detection. the Digital Scout is the size of a Pager, can be worn on a BELT and set to BEEP or Vibrate or completely silent and the Digital Scout is Completely Automatic needs no monitoring . you can drive to a Agency tower and simply turn on the Digital Scout and it begins Collecting Frequencies. you can review the frequencies Later for verification and even displays how many times the Frequency was in use.
How was programming? Any hiccups with other P25 II groups? Does it have the same issues as the old one with P25 II simulcast sites and receiving garbled voice?
Can't comment on phase II, only phase I systems in my area. Programming wasn't difficult for me but I've computer programmed many different scanners for years now. I like the software provided.
the NEW I/Q SDR scanners from Whistler and Uniden as well as ICOM and AOR Receiver solve the Simucast Reception problem, note - the AOR and ICOM scanners don't trunktrack but can still receive trunking frequencies.
I bought a Pro-688 and its Mobile brother from Radio Shack as they were closing down, now the radios are Double what I paid because they are good scanners. Check with Whistler and Uniden frequently as they will clear out old inventory to make room for the NEW models they introduce. sometimes they offer a limited amount of TEST samples and Repairs for good prices as well.
@@markplott4820 They're good radios but not worth anywhere near double. Radioshack was shit and you have to pay a lot just to upgrade those because RS refused to support them and locked them down to their own firmware. The only people paying for radioshacks rebranded stuff are stupid retards. Everyone else just get's the non rebranded whistler scanners and Remtronix 800 antenna.
@@KandiKlover - What ? I own multiple RS scanners both Analog, Trunking and Digital as well. My Pro-668 is Fully Supported by Whistler, I have Updated everything via Software and even Sent it to Whistler for DMR upgrade. It works great. I NEVER paid full price for my RS scanners, I have always bought them when they were closing them out. I bought several RS scanners when they were closing down to use in a Scanner Bank at home. I also took the oputunity to buy multiple HAM and Scanner antenna / accessory from RS as well. I have bought a Refurb WS 1088 from Whistler and a Refurb TRX-1. I am planning on buying the NEW WS TRX-100 SDR scanner in Q1 when it comes out.
@@KandiKlover - I my opinion the ICOM R30 and the Whistler scanners are the BEST value in Scanning today. the Uniden for Rich Folk and Media Professionals, but I object the idea of Disabling Modes and placing them behind a Paywall. that's just NOT nice. All Modes should be FREE for all to use. as in the ICOM R30. and I don't paying a small amount to ADD modes that the Radio could not receive otherwise.
do the handheld scanners work just as well as desktop? i really want a handheld, but if i can't get anything on it what's the oping. thanks for any help :)
That's a question I asked many, many years ago when I first bought a handheld. The answer is generally yes, handheld scanners work just as well as desktop ones. The main advantages of a desktop unit is 1) a larger speaker for louder, clearer audio, 2) AC power vs. relying on battery power and 3) a larger display (sometimes). That said the handheld gives you better portability and flexibility. Just be prepared to have a good set (or 2) of rechargeable batteries and a decent charger. But I think you'll do just fine with a handheld over a desktop unit.
Thanks for the reply. Do you recommend the TRX? I have the WS1065, but I know many are going to P25 2, which is why I'm interested in this. Is programing similar to the 1065? I have a Mac so the online software wont help me any unfortunately..... Just want to make sure it's worth the money.
Lauren Krohe the WS1065 is a workhorse of a scanner, I've owned the handheld counterpart of that radio and it was great. Programming has a similar architecture except for one big difference. The TRX has an SD card in it containing the whole US/Canada database of systems/frequencies from the Radio Reference website. This allows you to browse the database by choosing your state then county, or by entering your zip code. You then select the system or frequencies you want to monitor and import them into a scanlist (you get 200 vs 20 on the 1065). This can be done all from the radio and can be tricky. Using the software does make it a lot more manageable but isn't necessary. If there was just one feature I can mention in recommendation of this radio is it's ability to record & playback transmissions from channels of your choice as you see demonstrated in this video. It's awesome and very useful.
I'm kind of disappointed in this scanner. I barely get anything on it. :( I'm going to give it until the weekend, and if it doesnt change i'm sending it back :(
programming is super easy, just use the included EZ scan software for the TRX-1 , be sure to install DSP and Firmware updates then install the frequency database at least weekly as many agency are migrating to Digital and Hybrid Conventional/Digital Trunking systems. you can go by Zipcode but its NOT very specific , you can manually select by State, County and by City. then you can go in further select the various agency and Departments you wish to monitor and by blocking unwanted agency like Animal Control. be sure to add Systems as well as many agency have radio systems not listen in the normal Agency or Counties/Citys folder. things that might be of interest is MEDIA category, this is where Plane, Helicopter and Car reporters are and they usually broadcast LIVE as an incident happens before they Announce it in the Hourly News, you can also monitor NEWS crews setting up and pre recording a NEWS story for Later Broadcast before its shown on TV.
Duke - your Scanner is ONLY as good as the QUALITY of your Antenna. the included Rubber Duck antenna included with scanner is TRASH, get a proper one from Radio Shack or a HAM radio Antenna.
@@KandiKlover The Uniden BCD436hp/536hp are solid scanners. They work much better than the TRX radios on P25 simulcast systems. Also can actually track DMR Tier 3 systems unlike the TRX radios. The SDS100/200 are even better on P25 simulcast systems.
