Just in case nobody has mentioned it yet, the term "hair metal" is a term which was coined after the era had passed, and was intended to be derogatory. Back at the time this genre was popular it was referred to as "glam metal". It is something that evolved over time and drew from a lot of early influences, but I think the 3 bands that basically perfected it first and hit it really big were Motley Crue, Poison, and Ratt. They were of course followed by a lot of other bands they made contributions to the genre, but in terms of the first to define and had the most influence I'd say it was those 3.

As someone who grew up in during this time, this description is pretty much spot on, with the exception that we didn't really call it glam metal, just glam (or poser metal as a derogatory term). There were lots of 70s influences to the genre - Alice Cooper, KISS, New York Dolls, David Bowie, and Gary Glitter, to name a few. Because of the plethora of bands on the Sunset Strip and around LA at the time they needed a way to set themselves apart, and dressing up in wild costumes, using makeup, and having outrageous sets was the way they did it.

The problem with the question is the hair metal has never had a proper definition. It was just a label that music snobs and rock critics (but it repeat myself) used to deride music they didn't like without having to support their arguments that it wasn't good music. Some have suggested hair metal as putting more priority into the look of the band than the music. Ok, well, what about New York Dolls, then? Why isn't NYD a hair metal band instead of a punk band? If hair metal is just bands with long hair then why aren't the Beatles a hair band? The truth is that hair metal is a meaningless fucking term that we use a lot because others use it and really no one knows what it means.

You could argue that Motley Crue was the first and most successful "hair metal" band, but the "Glam Rock" bands came before them which paved the way for this style. I am sure people will argue this point all day long. Many heavy metal bands since the late 60s did the long hair thing, but glam rock bands added in the make up.

I'd agree with your statement, the glam bands of the '70's (Bowie, T-Tex etc.) and the theatrics to Kiss and the heaviness of Sabbath and the party of Van Halen kind of lead to the Crue and hair metal. Tommy Lee was known for doing insane drum solos, not because of the playing but because of what he would have his kit do.
Theater of Pain tour: Kit went on a 90 degree angle so the top was facing the audience
GIrls Girls Girls tour: Did a 360 rotation like you saw in the video
Dr. Feelgood Tour: Lee went to a separate kit that went above the audience
Then there were the stunts that he did in latter tours
2011-2012 (or so): Kit was on a loop that went upside down, and Lee would even have a fan join him
2014-2015: The "Roller coaster" kit that went on a track over the audience, rotating. Just insane.

      Robert Boyer
I know what you mean. I always thought that I would get killed in my 1971 Trans Am. That was the fastest car I ever had it had a 455 with a four speed transmission in it. The engine was bored out and had a big cam two and a half inch headers going into six inch collectors then the stock mufflers so it wasn't loud unless you punched it and the tires broke loose and started screaming even though it had 60 series tires on all four wheels. The speedometer went to 165 mph and once I had it close to being pegged but had to let off it because the front end of the car got really light and it felt almost like it was floating. It ended up getting hit by an older woman (66 years old) that ran a stop sign and hit me at my passenger side back wheel and twisted the body so bad that on the drivers side rear roof piller was wrinkled up. I was unhurt but by neck felt like maybe my neck muscles got a bit stretched a bit so I spent the night in the hospital for observation. That was the only time I was in a hospital until about three weeks ago when I spent 13 days in the hospital for spine fusion surgery and a tumor removed as much as they could because the tumor was wrapped around all those nerves that come around your tailbone. Unfortunately the tumor turned out to be stage 4 metastatic renal cell carcinoma both my kidneys have tumors as does my right lung and what is left on my lower spine. At least since my surgery I don't have the part of the tumor that was pressing against my sciatic nerve. For a little over three months I had the worst pain I've ever felt in my life staring in my tailbone then it would go over to my right butt cheek and down my hamstring. My back is healing well now. I probably don't have very many years left but I'm 63 years old and have had a good life and had a lot of good times. If fact there are a lot of my memories from the 70s and 80s that are a bit fuzzy if you know what I mean. Lol. So I'm just going live the rest of my life to the fullest. And not worry about things that I have no control over. The 70s and 80s rocked!

Touching on your thoughts of being there in the 80s, on the Sunset Strip... you're right. The sheer amount of talent in the room at any given time was phenomenal. And it was a party every night. Living in LA, you hear all the stories and get to relive a bit of it when you hit up some of the venues that made that time period what it was. Myself, I am also 40 going on 41. So I have seen my share of shows from alot of these bands. Motley Crue I have seen about 10 times. Best was 2011 at the famous Sunset Strip Music Festival. They literally shutdown a couple block section of the Strip for the show. Motley Crue came on right after Bush. Sun was setting. Flanked by legendary bars & venues: Rainbow Bar and Grill, The Roxy, The Whiskey, The Viper Room, The Key Club (at the time). Right down the street from the Crue's old apartment. It was a surreal moment. Almost like the ghosts of that decade of decadence came back to life to witness Motley Crue rock the Strip. A night I will never forget. And afterward, it was a madhouse. You had members of some of those bands partying with people, lines of people up and down the Strip waiting to get into places. Music everywhere. Tommy was in The Whiskey raising hell. It was a wild night. I remember running into this guy that said he hasn't seen the Strip that alive since 1989. Pretty cool. They were basically the most notorious band on the Strip at that time. If you get a chance, watch a video on here called "When Metal Ruled the World". It was an old VH1 documentary that talked about the debauchery of these bands during that time. Very interesting.

In the LA scene..the first band to breakout and give the glam scene out there national recognition was Quite Riot. A lot of the influences came from NY Dolls, Bowie, T-Rex and KISS. People can make fun of the glam look...but there were many many amazing musicians at this time in music.

1987 was the year that it all came together. There were some bands that had been around prior to that year. But as time went on more and more bands came on the scene and became "hair metal". I don't know who started that phrase but it is misleading. "Hair metal" became a collective term for all band that were hard and or heavy. And to visualize the majority had long hair. Ultimately, there were 2 genre's being blended together. The first ones to start this genre up was, I believe, Def Leppard with their super album Pyromania in late December 1982/early January 1983. The others to follow are: Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Ratt, Bon Jovi, Scorpions, Whitesnake, Dokken, Lita Ford (true heavy metal: Motorhead, Iron Maiden and Accept were getting noticed as well). There where already established bands like Ozzy Osbourne, Motorhead, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were gaining popularity. MTV was playing a lot of videos back then and it was a visual form of discovering new bands. Back when MTV actually played music videos, it was a sure way of getting noticed back then. Somehow they all got lumped together. Probably because of the energy in the music and the shredding guitars along with the long hair. We had the best music in the 80's IMO. Andrew Awakened is right... in the 80's it was referred to as "glam metal" and "hair metal" is really a diss on the genre and the era. Poison were late players in the game. They came on the scene in 1987. Def Leppard's first release was the song Photograph. I was 13 and I remember it well. It broke new ground for musicians and set the bar higher in terms of production. Thanks in part to Mutt Lang who produced Pyromania and Hysteria.

I grew up in West Hollywood during the 80s and was around this scene as my parents were musicians. There was definitely early influence from The New York Dolls, Alice Cooper, David Bowie and Kiss from the 70s. But the scene on the sunset strip that I was a kid around in the early 80s is considered the birth of Hair Metal or Glam Metal. I've always considered Motley Crue the pioneering band with others like Ratt, WASP, and many that most have never heard of joining in.
