  • Full length version of the theme music from the Esso TV ad from the mid-70s by Jeff Wayne - The Tiger Mix by Cut & Thrust.
Jeff Wayne’s Tiger Theme music was first used in the Esso TV ads on British TV in 1975 and was still being used 12 years later - a real testament to Jeff Wayne’s talent as a composer.
For this mix, I’ve used what appears to be the only existing instrumental version (without voice over), which I sourced from UA-cam. It wasn’t the best quality by any means, but I’ve tried to restore the audio as much as I can while imagining how a full length version might have sounded. I’ve also included parts of a voice over used in another Esso ‘Tiger’ ad from 1981. Interestingly, this ad talks about finding "new forms of energy" and "affordable alternatives to oil". It's sad that, over 40 years later, we’re still talking about the same thing.
If an oil company advertised on TV today, I’m pretty sure they would have an incredibly tough time to gain the love and fondness that this advertising campaign received back in the 70s/80s. I remember watching the Esso TV commercials as a child and being totally captivated by the aerial shots of land and sea and the beautiful tiger running along the beach to the dramatic music by Jeff Wayne. They don't make 'em like that anymore!
No copyright infringement intended. This is a tribute remix born out of my love for the show and childhood memories. Copyright belongs to Jeff Wayne/Esso.

Fun fact: Esso is actually an initialism. S-O, for Standard Oil, or more specifically Standard Oil of New Jersey. Of course, in many U.S. states, Esso couldn't call themselves Esso because other companies held the Standard Oil trademark in those states. That's why Esso is called Exxon in the U.S., because it's a trademark they could use nationwide.

The name ESSO, is based upon S-O, for STANDARD OIL. The ES part (if I assume correctly) is for Eastern States, since on the East Coast of the United states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Mass, Rhode Island, Connecticut, NY, Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, DC, Virginia, Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana, the Standard oil name rights went to Jersey Standard (ESSO).
That is despite the existence of Mobil Oil (Standard Oil of New York State) who one would think would give objections to the trademark.
In actuality, Standard NY ACTUALLY gave the OK for Jersey Standard/Humble Oil to use the ESSO name in their own territory (which is New York and New England).
Court Cases in Mississippi involving Kentucky Standard (KYSO), who is linked to Standard Oil of California (Chevron) in the mid 1960s voided the ESSO name rights in M.S. making some, but in the end not everybody, having to rebrand.
But, by that time, the US base of Jersey Standard-Humble Was on their way to adopt a National brand name, which would be called EXXON, after two scrapped plansZ
The original plan was to use the name ENCO, which was used in the Western half of The States, but due to its meaning in Japanese being Stalled Car, that name was Scrapped.
And the second suggestion? EXON. That ALMOST took the green light, Until it was noted that the Governor of Nebraska at the time (1971) was James EXON, and the company thought that using a politician’s name didn’t sound like a right idea, a second X was added, giving us EXXON. The branding was rolled out during 1972, with a board meeting confirming the name that October. Effective on Jan 1 1973, the group was formally re-named as “EXXON CORPORATION”
In Canada and elsewhere, the ESSO name is still used.

WOW, amazing job!! I'm not an audio tech, but I was trying to restore this track the best I could with Izotope 10 around the time you released this, coincydink! That PC died & the version I made hadn't been uploaded for safety for some reason, so I'm going to have another go. However, as you love this track too, I'd love to hear a restored version from you as well, all the crackle gone, with a deeper rich tone, it deserves it. Hopefully one day an original will be found, they're out there... somewhere?!?!

You’re right in saying such a campaign today by oil companies would struggle to gain the popularity these did in the 70s and 80s but it was a different world back then. If you think the U.K. economy is bad now it really was on its arse by the mid-70s so these oil giants labouring away in the North Sea were really seen as our economic saviours, which of course they were, and duly lionised (or should that be tiger-ised?)
