Brings back memories of THRUST SSC. The highs and lows were all part of building a fantastic car and team members. Andy is the best man for the job calm and committed with the skills to pull it off. No doubt, great men with skills to build the perfect car to get the record. Go team. You can do it. Dee 🍀🍀🍀🍀

I'm just about old enough to remember Donald Campbell in Bluebird K7 on Coniston Water and since those days, when I could still wear short trousers without ridicule, I have been fascinated by Land and Water Speed Records. I remember following Thrust SSC and watching it break the LSR in 1997. Heady stuff. Glad to see Bloodhound is back on track (literally and figuratively) and all kudos to these guys for pushing the envelope of technology to achieve greatness once again.

It's weird there are many people who don't know what's the purpose of this marvellous piece of engineering. It isn't your road-legal, commercial car that you can drive on Autobahns. Nope. It's a car shaped like a jet with minimum aerodynamics so it doesn't lift. Why the shape? Just so it doesn't take off. It's shaped like a pencil and a thing like this with normal car shape will literally kill thw the driver and explode the chassis. This car is built for land speed records, to achieve new heights in science and help students learn and get inspired by that. Lots of people are bashing the driver. Well, he is Andy Green, wing commander of British RAF and he did land speed tests before. As of land speed record history, it's not the first time that's happening. More than 20 years ago, we had Thrust SSC that successfully achieved near-Mach 1 speed. This though, will do plenty of tests and speed runs till 2021, when it will embark on the it's 1000-mph goal which is truly going to be amazing and the only land vehicle that could achieve Mach 1 speeds.
    (Sorry for my bad English).
Edit: Some might also ask why this car is running in desert without any tyres. If they try it on a road or a runway, horrible stuff can happen. Jessi Combs accident is one example. Also a tyre can't tolerate same amount of forces and power as this car aims. These are aluminium wheels.

    • @johnmiller6274

The car that killed Jessi Combs was a death trap. It’s literally a plane with wheels attached to it and its wings removed. The cockpit of planes are not designed to survived crashes of any sort. That’s why jet fighters use ejections seats and not some carbon fiber composite cockpit specifically designed to survive crashes like F1 cars. So it’s not a surprise she died when she crashed. Bloodhound, meanwhile, the cockpit is designed to survive a crash at 1000 mph so that the driver can hopefully survive if he crashes.

I own a car that has a top speed of 180 mph (289 KPH) and you couldn't give me a million dollars to drive this car at 180 mph. I've had it up to 120 and things started going really fast. After having a Charmin moment I let off the gas. When I was young and stupid, I would have driven the thing to the limit, but when you get older you realize how fragile life is.

Captain America I had my BMW up off the clock. It's limited to 155, I had the clock saying 160, which probably would have been around 153 or 154 miles per hour. The trouble is though, trying to do it is difficult because I did it on the German autobahn where there is no speed limit, but cars keep pulling out in front of you so you have to do it on a quiet stretch of Road.

Had a crash with my own little cheap motorcycle last year, but for someday, one day, 300kmh on a motorcycle, rental, is on the bucket list. Not terribly important but. If I ever feel there's nothing to do anymore. My dream motorcycle is a triumph street triple r though. Did 180on mine, 190_200on another 220in a car. Motorcycles feel way faster and terrifying. And fun. Maybe it's the same. Though the real fun is curves anyway. I guess the sensation of the heightened risk of death never wears off, but speed does rather quickly, acceleration less so, and acceleration and speed in curves always stays awesome

Reference to an article from the Lyncean Group Website
"So, how flat is Hakskeen Pan and how much does it matter to a land speed record car traveling at 1,000 mph (1,609 kph)? The Cape Town, South Africa, survey company Lloyd & Hill surveyed the entire 16 km by 500 meter wide track surface (an area of about 8 million square meters) measuring the elevation in each square meter to an accuracy of 10 mm (0.39 in) or less. Using laser-scanning technology to collect data, and some considerable computing resources, Lloyd & Hill reduced four billion laser measurements into a 3-dimensional surface map of Hakskeen Pan. Key findings were:
    1. Hakskeen Pan has a very gentle slope from north to south: dropping 300 mm in 16 km (about one foot in 10 miles)
    2. Across the whole surface, the biggest ‘bumps’ and ‘dips’ are less than 50 mm (2 inches) from the average elevation.
    3. There’s an 80 mm (3.12 in) ‘step’ that occurs in a distance of 180 m (590 ft) running across the Pan, just over 9 km from the northern end of the track, and just where the car will be travelling at 1,000 mph."
The story here is; How is it possible that this location on earth is as flat as it has been confirmed to be using laser surveying by the Lloyd & Hill survey company when the mainstream "science" community says we are on a ball with a drop in elevation of 8 inches times the distance squared ?
Academia states the Earth has a radius of approximately 3965 miles. Using the Pythagorean theorem, that calculates to an average curvature of 7.98 inches per mile or approximately 8 inches per mile (squared) so when that formula is applied over 9 miles, I think it would look like this: 9 x 9 x 8 = 648 inches or a 12 foot drop in elevation making it virtually impossible to view the Bloodhound land speed car after only four miles heading away from the starting location.

Simple answer. When they talk about it being "flat", they are talking about it's variation compared to the theoretical "perfect" curve of the earth.
Even simpler answer. The world is fecking ROUND, you dingbat!!!!

Good evening Christopher your ignorance of the significance of the laser survey data collected shines in your inability to respond to an argument in any other manner than by attempted ridicule.
The “theoretical perfect curve” you suggest the shape of earth is, was foundational to Eratosthenes who used math in his theory to calculate the circumference of earth 2000 years ago. 4 billion laser survey data points collected by the Lloyd and Hill survey company on the Hakskeen Pan proves a drop in elevation of 12 inches over ten miles.
If math proves the shape of earth is a globe then using the same mathematical formula Eratosthenes used, the “theoretical perfect curve” appears, which is contrary to the results of the laser survey data.

      @lohman15 Couple of points.
The Land Speed Record is given to the person driving the machine, not the machine itself. Also, the Land Speed Record is a recognised title that, as with any world record, certain rules have to be followed to qualify for the title. The vehicle must be a wheeled vehicle (so rocket sleds are out) and has to be able to do a run in each direction within an hour.
For example, the Large Hadron Collider is firing particles around its loop at near light speed, but despite being on land, it wouldn't meet the criteria for setting a lsr. Andy Green is the record holder. Thrust SSC is just the machine he used to take the record.

Well their main drive behind the project has been that it's inspirational for young people. This country has a big shortage of skilled engineers. Bloodhound was set up in 2 parts: an extensive set of educational workshops for young people, using the real land speed record attempt as an inspirational basis for the workshops. They've taken these workshops all around the country for several years to great success. Speed is exciting, and a great way to inspire a future generation of engineers

Compare that to the f22 raptor, which has been reported as the world's most powerful thrust fight jet at 70,000lbs of thrust, and that's with 2 engines.
