      Nah, the slug was only visible in the slowmo and there was a sonic boom after the ricochet. Try doing what he did and see for yourself.

    • @ZachBillings
      @ZachBillings 7 років тому +10

      I didn't hear a sonic boom from it and it wouldn't have shown up at that frame rate if it was supersonic. The helmet would have stopped it, but a hit to the face could have been deadly.

    • @valbeaumont8402
      @valbeaumont8402 7 років тому

      Zach Billings
      You don't need a high frame rate to capture supersonic objects -- there are so many videos that clearly show tracer bullets short distances away out of rifles and autocannons that fire them. They are still supersonic even then. You can even capture a plane as it goes from subsonic or transsonic to supersonic with the shockwave clearly outlined on the moisture that condenses around the plane. Explain that. Also there WERE two sonic booms -- right at the moment as the round was fired and after the sound of the metal being hit by the slug. Maybe you need a hearing aid.

    So smart to keep fire extinguishers near by! I keep one in every-other room at home! Even if it doesn't put a fire out, the few seconds to knock the flames down and get out could mean life or death. Spray as you run outside! Should keep a small fire extinguisher in your car/truck too!

  • @ryansmithza
    @ryansmithza 7 років тому +18

    Edwin, your videos are really good but maybe you should make or have a stand made that will allow you to fire the firearms remotely. This way we can continue to see you shooting the titanium at 90 degrees! Perhaps a mount similar to what the 20mm has.
    Maybe you could also have a shield on the back of your truck that you and your very brave camera man could stand behind when there is a chance of a ricochet. That might also save your vehicle so that you don't have to walk home :D

      I agree, be careful. For ricochet, at least lie down so there's much less chance of being hit. Those blocks aren't going to stop something like that. Maybe even make a little sandbag wall or something, some steel barrier with a slot to shoot through. Might be a bit heavy by it would be worth it to keep you safe.

    Could you try Carbon Fiber plastic composite. It is supposed to be even stronger than Titanium.

    • @ric84
      @ric84 7 років тому +4

      GicaEric I don't think it would stand a chance. Metals and carbon fibre composites have very different material properties and a bullet would probably punch right trough it.
      It may be more stiff than titanium in cerain scenarios but it misses all material properties to make it bullet resistant.
      The way "stronger" if useually used to describe things is wrong most of the time and to make things bullet resistant you need a different combination of material properties.
      If anyone can further expand on the subject i'd love to hear it since i sucked at material science in college.

      Richard Hanjeleer what you need is something which can displace the energy. The energy has to go somewhere. So, something slightly flexible or even softer can be better. Too hard can become brittle where as softer absorbs the energy. If you can radiate the energy throughout the entire surface that is the best of all. You could potentially do very well with some kind of carbon fibre since the lattice has a huge amount of friction across layers a lump of carbon fibre the size of that titanium I have no doubt would stop those bullets

    A suggestion: for a somewhat valid method for comparison using different rounds with different metal plates/objects of varied thickness and metal type... => fabricate a rectangular steel stand with vertical channel irons to act as holding slots. An inverted "T" shape with sufficient sand bags on the near end of the horizontal leg frame would likely give some comparable results from test to test. C-clamps holding the target to smaller horizontal angles or channels (lapping internal to the verticals) would provide an adjustable holding frame to accommodate various shapes and thicknesses of targets (within the frame limits). Lastly, some small wooden wedges on the near side between the horizontals and main verticals could be used to take up any minor slack. The frame could be built to fold down, or pull some pins to make 2 easily carried rectangular components. Should be able to shoot 2 targets in one setup too, although the upper one would have slightly less resistance...i.e. more moment being applied to the upper one when using identical rounds.
    Projectile penetration is a function of resistance of the target to movement too...not just thickness, material type, and orientation. An overall more rigid mounting system would make for deeper penetrations. Using the same setup would allow comparisons to be made (although not too scientific). ...just my thoughts. Tkx for the gr8 videos!!

    Shooting in hot and dry weather is a really bad idea. The German Army had to learn that the hard way recently. The German Army did some missile testing this year in September in one of the hottest and dryest summers we ever had in Germany. The testing ground caught fire but the army was unable to put it out because their fire trucks were broken (like almost everything in the German Army). The fire has been burning for five weeks, four square miles of nature reserve area went up in flames. The smoke could occasionally be seen and smelled even where I live, about 50 miles away from the testing ground.

    We need to thank you to bring some awesome videos like that. But, please be careful when you'll shoot at 90° degrees angle. Things got serious very quick. Try to shoot on the ground or something like that, that minimizes the chance to get hit by a bullet' s fragments.

    just curious man, how much weapons safety training have you taken? The reason I am asking is you leave the magazine in when you say the weapon is clear. the weapon is not "clear" unless the magazine is first dropped and the bolt is brought to the rear and there are no rounds in the chamber. That being said it is up to you if you wish to walk in front of a weapons system with a magazine still in, I know and most people know that a cold gun is not going to just shoot at random 99.9% of the time. Just a tip, muscle memory and redundancy are important in firearms safety, so always first drop the magazine and then pull the bolt to the rear, because if you build bad habits you could eventually get yourself or someone else hurt. Be safe, and have fun.

    Curious, what would you have done if that fire had gotten totally out of control???
    I can say one thing, I would not want to be in your shoes, had that fire spread for thousands of acres of dry desert land...
    Something tells me (not even being a 50 caliber shooter) that shooting tracer rounds in an extremely dry desert, with high winds, is not really a wise idea, even if you were carrying a truckload of fire extinguishers, which i seriously doubt you are.....

    It's called sloped armor. they tilt it at an angle. this forces the round to to burrow through more metal without adding any weight. at a 90 degree angle the round has to burrow through less metal distance-wise
