Thank you SO much for posting this as it is almost impossible to find an example of what the HLN channel was that hasn't been removed. I wish I could find a version even earlier than this post as this 1990 post gives hints of the death to come of HLN. In the 80s there was only one commercial break, usually at the end of the 30 minutes of news (technically 25 minutes) and it was glorious. While in HS and college in the 80s me and several of my friends always had HLN on in the background if we weren't watching some specific non-news show. It truly was a life-changer in terms of educating the public/youth, promoting civil discussions, and just in general making everyone 'smarter' about how the world works and our place in it. 'Around the world in 30 minutes' indeed! No long winded and slanted position pieces. No so-called commentators. Just 30 minutes of facts and 30 minutes was just enough time to briefly cover what mattered in domestic, international, money, sports, (and eventually) entertainment. Now regardless of news source, it's hour+ long shows of 'personalities' just spouting whatever they are told to say, with constant commercials. Turner Broadcasting understood the importance of HLN at first by creating a second CNN News channel with longer stories while retaining the 'just the facts' HLN but eventually, and sadly doubling down on the fluff and cannibalizing HLN. I vividly remember my disappointment as longer and longer pieces and more and more commercials started showing up on HLN until even Turner Broadcasting realized they couldn't in good conscience call the channel HLN and we got CNN 2. Now, even in 2024 I believe there is a market for an old-school HLN type channel. No such thing exists anymore and never will unless someone just funds it and stays out of the way as Ted Turner was doing during those wonderful times. We, as a people, have gotten way dumber without such a thing.
CNN headline news was a fixture in my daily life growing up in the 80s, you heard their voices and saw their faces every day of the week pretty much everywhere, what a fun time it was. Even traveling thru the airports you saw and heard CCN news on the tvs......." Around the world in 30 minutes"!
This is so nostalgic. I remember in 1990 I was five years old and my dad would watch Headline News. Back when I knew nothing nor did I really understand or really care about the first Iraq war, the breakdown of the Soviet Union, etc. I knew George Bush was president but that's about it. All I wanted to do was watch cartoons. I always thought Lynne Russell looked like Peggy Bundy though.
I was in the Army Reserves at this time going to AIT at Ft Eustis, Va. Little did I know that two months later I would be called up to active duty and deployed to Saudi Arabia.
This is great to look back on. I wonder if the subdivisions talked about around 16:21 are still around and as nice. One thing I'd love to see on UA-cam is a way to improve the resolution on great old vids like this.
Well, it depends on whether you're asking because you think it's good or bad. If you think it's good, it's because tapes aren't as low quality as they often seem. They usually look a lot better than most people remember them. If you think it's bad, it's because, even though tapes aren't _that_ low quality, they're still not as high quality as our digital media storage today.
@@featheryfemme In other words, the image quality that you would see on your TV back then was better than what you see here. Tapes were not as good to preserve the images as digital media.
Ah, if only the news could still be like this today. Now we've got news channels like Fox and CNN that seem to care less about professional reporting and more about sharing their own opinions. And when they do report on something legitimate, they always have to interject with what they think about it. I miss the unbiased news that only cared about letting people know what was going on in the world and not about trying to swing people one way or the other politically.
I would do anything to bring back Chuck Roberts out of retirement to correspond CNN headline news the old-school way! That’s when news was worth watching...

On the money ... glad you enjoyed the video!
This is how the news media should be. just the facts no opinion or loaded leaning questions...
100% agree! CNN needs to get its sh$t back together..
Yes, just report the news without all the fluff!
@@sillygoose635 If you believe that CNN is the facts then you have no brain in your head, moron.

Was I the only teenager in love with Lynne Russell in the 80s? I was an avid HN watcher during my teens.
No, you weren't the only one
She was soooooooo hot. The original MILF. I was 18 and crazy about her.
She’s the reason why my forearm is so big.

That's so cool! Man, I wish I could experience the 90s. Definitely seems like a very fun time. Too bad I was born afterwards.
MacDragard same here. I was 5 too!
So did I.. Lynne Russell is now retired from television news, but I still miss her broadcast.

Great capture!
How come she’s not telling me how I should feel; and why I should hate people who don’t feel the same?
Lmao
Was that Kevin Sorbo in the Mitchum Deodorant commercial?

0:01 and 22:55 When did Headline News introduced new graphics?
I think they switched to the format seen here in early 1989.
And the voiceover at the bumper was added in 1990.

You would never see foreign policy presented this way today on the news. Especially not CNN.
My 17th birthday!

Where the hell is "liquid ventilation" during the Coronavirus outbreak?
ahhh, the sexy lynne russell. How I miss her and Jessica Savitch. I also miss the NBC woman achor Jane Pauley. Where did she go?
Back when CNN did news
They dont "do" news, they report it. Always have. It's just, today some people dont like having that light shined on them.
So true
Back when conservatives didn’t call everything “fake”.
@@johnp4008 CNN is propaganda today. Almost entirely so.
