The capping and pinning of the anchors was a milestone l never expected that privilege but through encouragement of some of the chiefs community not to mention guidance; l retired as a Equipment Operator Chief with 24 years. The transition from the Dixie Cup to Combination Cover changes your world completely and depending your leadership skills and attitude towards your subordinates, plus relationship with senior staff can make or brake your career! I had a great crew with a "Can Do" attitude that made my career most memorable! Seabees "Can Do"

My Dad was not a Chief, but he IS NAVY! Engine Room Specialist; Destroyer USS CONE 866-- KOREA! After 50 yrs at his Lifetime Home, I moved my 89 yr old Dad-- Dec 14th, 2022 to his new home, just a stone throw away through the Woods of my office, so I can hopefully be there for his every need. But you can rest assured, he is still in full control! HE'S NAVY; Next Monday morning I'm betting he will be sawing and splitting Firewood in 29° weather for me to use for my office heater JUST so he doesn't get bored next week!!! God Bless You Navy Warriors!!

When I was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy, it came out on a signal that I had been selected for Chief, I was informed by one of the communicators who stuck his head around the door and informed me that I was on signal. Then in time honoured tradition I went down the PO's mess and rang the bell at the bar, cost me a barrel of beer, one of the joys of serving in the Senior Service alcohol onboard ships.
I was due to leave the ship I had was serving on after 3 years onboard.
When I joined my new shoreside establishment after a few weeks I was rated up. Attended the Captains table, then a trip to the tailors to get my uniform changed, branch badges on the lapels and 3 buttons on the each sleeve, we call it getting your buttons change of cap badge and epaulettes. One of the highlights of my 22 years service, that fact you are selected makes it special there is a certain aura about being a Chief Petty Officer. Good times

I wish I would have stayed in the Navy and made chief but, Gramm-Rudman act kicked in in late 80's and I transferred into the Army. Did basic again as an E5 and during the remainder of my career, I made 1SG. Not too bad for changing branches, even for only as long as it takes to repeat the oath of enlistment again, at MEPS. Great traditions in the Navy as I was able to get my Blue Nose and Shellback. If I had reenlisted and stayed in the Navy, I would have also been a plankowner on the Burke as an STG1. No crying over spilled milk...lol. Great video and BZ shipmates!

Being selected, the anchors placed on your collar, and then capped it is a feeling no one can know unless they go through the honored process! Thanks EOC Rollins Retired (A Seabee) To those who reach this honored milestone in their career they join a very special order of men and women for a great responsibility in leadership and management!

One thing most chiefs forget is the “e” in their pay grade is not exclusive, extra special or exceptional. It still designates them as ENLISTED and nothing special.

When I was selected for Chief I was at OPM Subic Bay. The Marine Colonel I worked for had a patrol wagon come and arrest me and put me in cuffs and locked in the van. I was wondering what I did, then after all of us were in the conference room they laughed at us and said congrats.

When the Lord Created Chief Petty Officers
When the Lord was creating Chief Petty Officer, he was in his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said " your doing a lot of fiddling around with this one."
And the Lord said "Have you read the specs on this order?" " A Chief Petty Officer has to be able to work 12-24 hours per day, through any type of weather, on any ship or boat, know the laws of the sea, be able to load and unload hundreds of tons of cargo after being up all night, and then try to get some sleep in an area that is accessible to and is used by all crew. He has to live in his shop, if need be, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for days on end, offer advice and counseling and still meet time schedules, maintain an even and controlled composure when all around him have gone mad. And he has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said "Six pairs of hands...No way."
"The hands are not causing me the problem," said the Lord, "It's the three pairs of eyes a Chief Petty Officer has to have."
"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.
The Lord nodded and said, "One pair that sees the herd of whales or a boat in peril, another pair that can see the blind spots that dolphins and young sailors love to hide in, and another pair in front that can look reassuringly at the young bleeding sailor, who is injured, by saying "You'll be okay" when he knows it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."
"I can't" said the Lord. "I already have a model that can steam his ship 700-800 miles a day without an incident and raise his family of five, seldom seeing them, on less than $2000 per month."
The angel circles the Chief Petty Officer slowly, "Can he think?" She asked.
"You bet" said the Lord. "It can tell you how to secure for sea, recite Navy Regulations and the UCMJ in its sleep, deliver his assigned cargo, be a parent, offer timely advice to young sailors and junior officers, help search for missing children, defend women's and children's rights. Tries to get 8 hours of rest, when he can, and raises a family of law respecting citizens while seldom ever going home... And still keeps a good sense of humor. This Chief Petty Officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with port calls in areas created from scenes painted in hell, comfort the injured, their family and friends, and then read in the daily paper how the military is no more than baby killers with guns and have no respect for others."
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek fo the Chief Petty Officer. "There's a leak," she proclaimed. "I told you that you were trying to put to much into this model."
"That's not a leak," Said the Lord, "It's a tear." "It's for bottled up emotions, fallen comrades, for commitment to that piece of cloth called the Flag, for justice and for the families without fathers."
"You're a genius," said the angel.
The Lord looking somber said "I didn't put it there."
