And to answer your question of who they know how to roast: they just pick the quartets that fit in the category whether that be if the quartet has changed people or if that quartet changed their name and so on

That’s not exactly the joke. Wheelhouse broke up long before Studio 4, but originally featured a different Bass(and Tenor which is a whole other thing), but specifically after the Bass(Al Mazzoni) left Studio 4 he was replaced by Dan Van Wetering who ironically was the replacement Bass of Wheelhouse for Mike Kelly(the original). Hence the reference to Wheelhouse bc three of the members of the last iteration were together in the last iteration of Wheelhouse.

I found this by accident while looking for the original Crazy Ex Girlfriend song and I honestly could not stop smiling the whole way through! While I don't know the ins and outs of competitive barbershop drama, I feel like I could pick up a lot from context, so it was still deeply entertaining, and these guys just present it with such flair
There’s never any mean drama, it seems like they all genuinely like each other. If NF4’s vlogs/songs show anything it’s that they get on with all these quartets (and when they sing together, it’s magnificent.) The best way to show you, ex winners of the convention usually go on to write the charts (music and words) for most of the quartets that compete, each year. So there’s a sense of helping out, rather than being ultra-competitive.

Greg Stickler based on the judging standards that currently exist I agree with the judges decisions because I think judging based purely on technical ability they got the scores correct this year (which I often don’t think) but I will also mention that I don’t like many of the top quartets right now and do not think the judging system is conducive to the growth and furthering of barbershop. This exact same issue was seen with Boston Common where one quartet was clearly the best because they are a quartet that people would want to see over and over. Many of the sets nowadays are technically impressive but I wouldn’t care to go to a concert and quite frankly I wouldn’t enjoy it. In my opinion THE three things that should be judged on is 1) whether it’s good barbershop sung with healthy technique, 2) whether or not people like it and 3) whether it is something that could actually function as a part of a show outside of competition (this third one primarily applies to choruses which, though impressive, are often too focused on acrobatics that seem out of place IMO rather than beautiful singing with minimal staging such as was done by Zero8 this year).

I think of all the Barbershop Quartets that I have heard, I'm truly entertained by The Newfangled Four. I've even played some of their videos for friends and they agree.
