The way he had a feeling things may not go their way, so he told him, again, what he meant to him, and hugged and kissed him, while he was still alive, made me proud of him. It's often harder for men to be affectionate, but they taught us how to have no regrets of things left unsaid!
My heart broke,when I saw Sir John passed. He seemed like one of the great ones, and I was so rooting for him to go home and enjoy his life for a time longer. He had so much,for, he had family that loved him.😢
My Nan just recently had a bowel blockage. They told us to expect the worst. She didn't make it home... she ended up in a care home as it was time, she couldn't live on her own anymore, but she made it through the blockage and is doing better. She has Parkinson's and is getting around the nursing home with her mobility frame and doing better than we expected. ❤
I was a bit taken aback by this episode. My heart goes out to Sir John’s family. My father passed away in August from a ruptured artery. I’ve sat in many ER’s over the years, and like John ,never expecting it would be the last time I would speak to him. His birthday was last week, and it hit me particularly hard. Dad would have been 89.
I'm so sorry for you loss, my father died 12 yrs ago now from a ruptured aortic aneurysm in his stomach and it was completely unexpected he literally worked and golfed the day before he died
My husband's last coherent words:" I felt a pop in my stomach." He was dead 7 minutes after paramedics arrived. Triple A was his cause of death. 15 years without him.
So I started watching this and another UK medical show about 2 years ago. Back story my dad and grandad both had Aortic aneurysm. My grandad died in 65. My Dad survived his surgury,but it was touch and go. So,I have high blood pressure and PVCs. Under control until 2 years ago. At the time I kept seeing episodes about AAAs. Repeatedly. Soon after I went to doc with what I thought were just PVC symptoms. They sent me to ER where, bless the doctor,he listened when I told him my family history. Even though it's uncommon in women they did a CT and surprise a Thoracic Aortic aneurysm 4.6 centimeters. I am not at the point of surgury, but I swear if not for those episodes I would never have mentioned my family AAA history. But it just kept nagging at me. Maybe coincidence,but it saved my life for now.

I grew up without a TV, Gameboy or PlayStation (born -92). My childhood was spent climbing trees, playing war with sticks and stones with the boys and came home with pine needles and moss in my hair. I grew up as a single child with only my mum, living on social benefits, but I still grew up in a rich home - rich of love and care We didn't have much, but we had time. I was always encouraged to express myself in every way possible, encouraged to create things. Learned lace making when I was 5, cross stich at 6, and knitting and crocheting at 7. Today, 25 years later, I'm making quite a lot of money off my crocheted things. My nan has dementia and barely remembers her own kids, but she remembers me and all the things I've made for her since childhood. She brags about me to the staff at her nursing home and how proud she is of me, since I was the only one in the family that kept up the handicrafts. I'm proud of having a childhood that didn't included screens and videogames, but the outdoors instead.

When the lady who was in the car accident said it was the first time she had worn the blouse that she had on in the car wreck it reminded me of my Mum. We were in a bad wreck as well & I remember my Mum saying she had on a new blouse. That blouse was cut off too.

Reading these comments is breaking my heart. I never got to say good by my dad. He died in the ambulance before I got to see him. I will never forget the anguish and constantly telling myself " I will not become hysterical while driving". I knew he had not made it before I left for the hospital in pouring rain storm. Love your family while you can. He was 51 years old.

I lost a man that was my "adopted" grandfather. I was a child, and really respected and liked him. He had always been kind. In his early 80s, he was always hard at it, doing the work needed to run a small hay farm. He was doing a job he had done for decades, chopping the wood for the stove. He felt a sudden pain through his gut. His wife got him to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with that aneurysm. There was time for some of his family to get there. Johnny Martin passed away surrounded by his children and wife. He was genuinely loved and respected. No title needed. Rhys is yummy.

I broke my leg at 5 and my mom said she heard the squeal of the tires and knew. Mother’s intuition I guess. I’m adopted and she was terrified. I had a compound fracture of my left femur and slipped into a coma. My mom said that the last thing she heard me say is (screaming)” You dumb doctor don’t you know that that’s my broken leg” hahahhaa I had moxie . I also had a male nurse and it blew my little mind that he was a he. Nurse Scott, it’s been all these years but I remember you.

When you know it’s a twisted bowel,bowel contents are then spilling out into his abdomen and the part of his bowel that’s twisted is dying and becoming necrotic.Every minute they were waiting was killing him.
The patient came in 6pm, bloods and ct done, passed on to surgeons, with surgery likely around 9pm (narrator says "that evening"). St George's is a major trauma centre so it would not be unusual for CEPOD/emergency theatre(s) to be in use round the clock. Pretty good going I think.
So sad. About 20 years ago, I saw this thing on Oprah where she advised to tell your mom and dad thank you for all they did for you. So I wrote up a bunch of thank yous, cut them into strips and put them in a pretty box for my mom for Mother's Day. She cried when she started reading them because they were all things like, Thank you for not telling anyone I peed my pants, Thank you for giving me Ginger Ale when I was sick, Thank you for letting me sit outside on the steps to eat my dinner, Thank you for teaching me how to make chocolate pudding, etc. If you look back on your life, there are HUNDREDS of things you can mention. I had about 75 different items. Now that she's gone, I still have the box, which she saved, of course. I'm telling you, I'm SO glad I did that. So if you want to tell your mom or dad how much you appreciate them, do this. It'll be good for you and good for them.
LOL! I was also the careful one. Climbing trees and making dens, but I was always the one making sure we did things carefully, had a couple of spotters, when sending somebody into the tree, to secure a rope that would form a swing.

I had a twisted large intestine in February 2023. I was in the hospital 7 days. My surgeon wanted the twisted bowel to work it’s way out. That was the most miserable hospital stay I ever endured. Nasogastric tube tube aspirated all the backup/vomit. The n-Tube insertion was the worst thing I’ve had endured also. I would go for the surgery; I don’t care the age. Give the person a chance.
I wish I would’ve had what that dad gave his kids just love that’s it. Fuck the material stuff unfortunately I’m in my 30s and it’s only now that I’m getting anything that means anything
I really wish people would leave their eyebrows, hair color, skin, body and ECT. natural. So sad people need to change due to peer pressure, rudeness and opinions 😢 God made each and everyone of us beautifully 🙏❤️

I’m 75 ….have faced the grim Reaper more than once…Sir John had his son with him until the end…what a blessing…many who are in similar situations do not…believe me Sir John already knew the truth. He expected NOTHING LESS from his son. If those you love and love you cannot or will not tell you the absolute truth than who will? At the very least they got to say good-bye. Rest in peace Sir John. @@lindajohnson7838 I've also been going into heart surgery not knowing if I'd make it. Had my children or my husband told me something like that it would have upset me greatly. This isn't about "telling the truth" it's about encouraging your loved one before a life-threarening procedure. According to the son, his father would wake up every day and say that he was happy to be alive, that's proof that Sir John didn't want to die. God knows how those words impacted him going into the surgery and it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't make it because of his emotional state after those words. Our emotions also contribute to our recovery, that's why family members are encouraged to talk to people who are in coma or extremely ill, bring them music, etc.
My dad had us all around him at his death. We gave him our love and let him know he was a good dad and that it was ok if he needed to leave. Sometimes people need to know it's ok to die. Otherwise they hang on in pain and misery longer than they need to.
Sir John’s son was absolutely loving with him and made sure he knew what the outcomes would be. Why lie to his father? He wanted to remind him what an awesome life he had and it would be ok if he didn’t make it because he led a fabulous life. The surgeon had already told Sir John that this was a risky & serious operation and Sir John understood. Don’t be so judgmental…
I’ve woken up in the morning and gone "shit I have to get my bum to the ED...". Keep in mind I live in the US, somewhere going to an ED can easily bankrupt you. Always fun when one 🏳️🌈 man can pick out the 🏳️🌈 doctors. :-) (yes I suspect Rhys is on my team)

It is different in Europe. I do believe it 16 when you can drink beer. I do not drink. But My sister and my family have lived over there for years. They have different standards.
With the rate of poor,homeless and crime in the U.S.A., I hardly think an educated, titled European family feeding their children a well rounded palette is hardly something to get upset about. Focus on the important things like the child sex trafficking rampant in the U.S.A.
My boys usually got watered wine (sometimes with soda) with dinners from toddlerhood (Australia). We called it ‘kids wine’. Neither of them drink to excess and know how to handle their alcohol. If we visited people for dinner, we took nonalcoholic wine drinks with us so they weren’t shocked or put on the spot with their own children. Once they were 15-16 they were allowed a full strength wine with dinner or a light mixed spirit. I always considered a learning experience for them and educational. Better parents to introduce and control it, then the youngsters going nuts about it once they are legal. Both of them overindulged with friends on a couple of occasions and then had to deal with the hangovers and the parental disappointment. It didn’t occur more than a couple of times with either of them.
I lost both my parents by the age of 32. First was my mom when I was 25. It has hurt every day since. It just gets easier with time. Sir John passing was heart breaking. These shows might be making me a little too sad. But seeing the love between all these families is also joyful.
When they first brought Sir John into the cubicle room and as the minutes were in the video, I wondered if he had what the doctors call here a flipped bowel because that’s what my mom passed away with. His son really loved Sir John and cared deeply about what he was going through and wanted the best outcome for his dad. When you love a parent this much it’s hard to let them go. As SirJohns son showed. What a beautiful loving relationship they had. I’m glad the couple that was in the bad car accident both survived with non-life threatening injuries. Me too , it was a bit of an anti climax really.. Air ambulance to Wellington Hospital for a stent. No problems since😊
Bowel obstructions are painful and can be deadly. I had one that almost killed me, but I had an amazing doctor who saved me.

My father passed away from a chest A he made it to hospital had an operation to repair it but had major organ failure 😢

I had a twisted large intestine in February 2023. I was in the hospital 7 days. My surgeon wanted the twisted bowel to work it’s way out. That was the most miserable hospital stay I ever endured. Nasogastric tube tube aspirated all the backup/vomit. The n-Tube insertion was the worst thing I’ve had endured also.
I would go for the surgery; I don’t care the age. Give the person a chance.
I'm portuguese and I'm 54 years old and I used to drink wine at the meals , just a small glass, I was probably 9/10 years old 😜

I’m 75 ….have faced the grim Reaper more than once…Sir John had his son with him until the end…what a blessing…many who are in similar situations do not…believe me Sir John already knew the truth. He expected NOTHING LESS from his son. If those you love and love you cannot or will not tell you the absolute truth than who will? At the very least they got to say good-bye. Rest in peace Sir John. Condolences to his family.
@@lindajohnson7838 I've also been going into heart surgery not knowing if I'd make it. Had my children or my husband told me something like that it would have upset me greatly. This isn't about "telling the truth" it's about encouraging your loved one before a life-threarening procedure. According to the son, his father would wake up every day and say that he was happy to be alive, that's proof that Sir John didn't want to die. God knows how those words impacted him going into the surgery and it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't make it because of his emotional state after those words. Our emotions also contribute to our recovery, that's why family members are encouraged to talk to people who are in coma or extremely ill, bring them music, etc.
My dad had us all around him at his death. We gave him our love and let him know he was a good dad and that it was ok if he needed to leave. Sometimes people need to know it's ok to die. Otherwise they hang on in pain and misery longer than they need to.
Sir John’s son was absolutely loving with him and made sure he knew what the outcomes would be. Why lie to his father? He wanted to remind him what an awesome life he had and it would be ok if he didn’t make it because he led a fabulous life. The surgeon had already told Sir John that this was a risky & serious operation and Sir John understood. Don’t be so judgmental…

I’ve woken up in the morning and gone "shit I have to get my bum to the ED...". Keep in mind I live in the US, somewhere going to an ED can easily bankrupt you. Always fun when one 🏳️🌈 man can pick out the 🏳️🌈 doctors. :-) (yes I suspect Rhys is on my team)
I find it desperately sad that having a medical emergency in the US can be financially devastating. I hope you manage to stay as well as possible ... and out of that emergency room!

It is different in Europe. I do believe it 16 when you can drink beer. I do not drink. But My sister and my family have lived over there for years. They have different standards.
It happens in US more often than we believe. Sadly it isn’t always discovered until the person is an alcoholic and 17 or 25 years old.
With the rate of poor,homeless and crime in the U.S.A., I hardly think an educated, titled European family feeding their children a well rounded palette is hardly something to get upset about. Focus on the important things like the child sex trafficking rampant in the U.S.A.

My boys usually got watered wine (sometimes with soda) with dinners from toddlerhood (Australia). We called it ‘kids wine’. Neither of them drink to excess and know how to handle their alcohol. If we visited people for dinner, we took nonalcoholic wine drinks with us so they weren’t shocked or put on the spot with their own children. Once they were 15-16 they were allowed a full strength wine with dinner or a light mixed spirit. I always considered a learning experience for them and educational. Better parents to introduce and control it, then the youngsters going nuts about it once they are legal. Both of them overindulged with friends on a couple of occasions and then had to deal with the hangovers and the parental disappointment. It didn’t occur more than a couple of times with either of them.

I lost both my parents by the age of 32. First was my mom when I was 25. It has hurt every day since. It just gets easier with time. Sir John passing was heart breaking. These shows might be making me a little too sad. But seeing the love between all these families is also joyful.
When they first brought Sir John into the cubicle room and as the minutes were in the video, I wondered if he had what the doctors call here a flipped bowel because that’s what my mom passed away with. His son really loved Sir John and cared deeply about what he was going through and wanted the best outcome for his dad. When you love a parent this much it’s hard to let them go. As SirJohns son showed. What a beautiful loving relationship they had.
I’m glad the couple that was in the bad car accident both survived with non-life threatening injuries.
