  • Bears are a factor in every day life if you choose to travel in the north, especially if you are going remote. Many. people avoid locations, specifically because of the fear of bears, but they will be missing the best parts. This was my first visit to the south end of Work Channel, British Columbia and wow was it ever beautiful. I have covered more than half of the channel, but coming in from the mouth, and the entire area is spectacular. We had some amazing whale encounters on the other end of the channel, and now this visit brought us some of the best grizzly bear viewing I have ever seen. These bears out here rarely see humans, so they are both fearful and curious. The mom and cub that we saw several times, were very fearful of the boat and ran right away. The boars on the other hand were much more curious. The one that was so close to camp could not have cared less about us from the boat. I yelled, and he wouldn't even look up. Once on shore though, he was much more curious. I went down to the waterline to take some photos, though still plenty far away, and as soon as he saw me, he was on route. At first just walking, and my yelling did nothing to deter him. I was not far from camp, so I knew it would be safe to maintain a quick pace for the short jog back, but I was surprised to look back and see that his pace had also increased to match mine. I kicked it into high gear and got myself back to safety, but it wasn't long until he was right in camp with us. We did scare him off, and every day we saw the bears from the boat we would just talk to them a little bit. This sounds strange, but it does help them understand the boundaries of the area. Theres a lot of forest out there, and bears would really prefer to be away from humans, so if you let them know you're there, they will mostly stay away. All in all we had an amazing stay, but the only thing Work Channel has never provided me, is Shrimp or Crab. I have tried at both ends, but success has yet to be found.
Until the next time, thank you Work Channel.

I've rarely got something to say about your exceptional films because so many others say it much better than I could. But I have to say that your lingering shot of the trees and mountains in that exquisite light with a white bird crossing broke me.

Saturday is the best UA-cam day. Foresty Forest and Destination Adventures. Both showcasing our most amazing British Columbia. As always, your video was totally WOW. Never get tired of the scenery. Fun seeing all the griz. We had our first in person encounter since moving to the Kootenays with mummy griz and two cubs last week on a bike ride. Had a good chuckle watching Dustin do the Superman crab pot retrieval. And nice to see Emi at the helm. Thanks so much for this!

Having grown up in Prince Rupert and had the good fortune of having the time, health and fitness to explore a lot of the lakes, creeks, ridges and mountainsides around Work Channel, I feel incredibly blessed. In winter, I've ski toured a bunch up Skip Mountain just west of the beginning of the Work Channel road. Such a unique, mostly unspoiled neck of the woods and in all my time hiking, canoueing and ski touring around that area, never ran into another soul apart from the trusty companions I was with. Paradise.

Oh Dustin, another fantastic episode. The combination of scenery, humour, and your top notch editing just never let me down, but this one was just that much more special. The scenes of the granite rock coming out of the mist, or how you caught the Grizzlies doing what they do. The Provincial Government should be sending you 5 or 6 digit figures for the promotion of this great place we live....but I know that's not the point. Still, so happy you've been able to capture the magnificence of it all and share with so many that will never see the places you go. Thank you.

Work Channel is absolutely magnificent. It just takes me back to Jackman, Maine and all the high country that surrounds it; Boundary Bald Mtn, Sandy Bay Mtn, and Slidedown Mtn were my office for 9 years. Yeah wild country. No grizzies, but Black Bear for sure. The only way you'd see them is driving down a logging road, come around a curve and BAM, there it is staring at cha. A second later, POOF, its gone.
Love these episodes of Work Channel. It sounds like it was maybe a logging area.

Stunning beauty along with a every day try at fishing. Like you say, its not about just what you catch........ its the adventure in trying !
For fastners that shake loose, try cleaning them well with aerosal brake cleaner then a bit of blue locktight. For a stronger grip try the orange locktight..... but beware, its harder to break loose if needed. Avoid the red and green locktight unless using for their specialized purpose.
And......seriously, man...........at 9:55................. OLD MILWAUKEE ! ? Even us cheap ass Yoopers in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan dont normally stoop that low on the beer chain !

Great to see you make it into Work Channel. It is a nice part of our backyard. I once had 2 young 3-4 year old grizzlies approach me as I was launching my canoe into the estuary of the Lachmach river in the fall several years ago. They stopped when I beat my paddle on the side of my canoe but I soon came to realize that all they wanted to do was head upstream to fish for salmon so I had my buddy with the gun come to me from the road and the bears went around and made their way to their secret fishing spot! Pretty amazing how quiet they were as they approached me unnoticed. Not so much of a threat just wanted to go fishing. I am sure those bears are the overflow of Khutzeeymateen Provincial Park as it is only a few mountain passes away. Have a great trip North and keep up the great videos!

Hey Dustin, I watch your videos all the time. Great job! 2 tips: Crabs like the mix of fresh and salt water in river delta's, traps should be about 75 feet. Prawns really really really like Carlysle cat food in the can, punch holes in can and set trap at 250ft minimum. I use 450 foot prawn lines and regularly fish at 325+ feet. . Lead line is not required if you weight the line in the middle. Weights can be found at any fishing store. I weight my crab lines too and use about 125 foot lines to account for tidal action. Keep up the great work. I would get yourself a Scotty Trap-Ease roller for your boat. It will save the tube when pulling line and makes it way easier to pull. Cheers from Vancouver Island.

Really enjoyed the curiosity of the Grizzly cub and the application of caution by mother Grizzly. WOW, just WOW. Thank you for taking us along on these adventures, places known only to the scant locals, what a fantastic country we have the privilege of living in brought home to all of us where ever that may be.

THANKS Captain D., I was NOT having a great Saturday (and it was only 9:45 AM) but once I watched the video, saw the bears, and another little piece of the incredibly beautiful province I was lucky enough to be born in (even tho I'm in Ontario now) it lifted my down spirits and it's gonna carry me through the rest of the day on a great note. You and " 1st mate Emi" stay safe, don't play tag with the bears...lol... and just enjoy....Thanks again Dustin, you do amazing work, the content is exquisite, and I get such a kick out of the fun you have getting SKUNKED by the prawns and the Dungies...Take care, much love and Peace out, from Doc, in the Great White (now all green and damp, and headed into summer) North of southern Ontario, Canada...🦫🦫🐻🐻🐻🟥🍁🟥
