- Virginia Zeani as Violetta in a broadcast performance from the Metropolitan Opera New York in 1966. Zeani sang rarely at the Met., as at that time their popular resident Violetta was Anna Moffo.
However this did not prevent the audience responding spontaneously to their visitor with applause at the end of "Addio del passato" which lasted for over two minutes,
The tenor singing is Bruno Prevedi but the photo shows Alfredo Kraus. The paintings are from performances at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London in 1962.
Yet another example of the exquisite Violetta of the great Virginia Zeani. She sings with absolutely beautiful tone injected with passionate vocal acting. There is no doubting that this wonderful artist is the definitive Violetta of our time!

She's from an era of great singing which today seems to be totally lost.
The sound of her voice is like sound of the most beautiful cry ever heard.

I think the lisbon traviata [Callas] which I've listened to so many times really imprinted in me an association of latent anger with this scene. But Z's Violetta here is so quiet and womanly. It touches on a released spirituality in the role. Callas can be like a prophet railing at God in the desert-- struggling against her inevitable calling--, but Zeani is lovingly dying for our sins. Brava.

This is what's missing in opera today. But guess what- most people don't know the difference. They'll stand and Bravo any of the garbage at the Met. today. Yes- i'm another one "of those". Either you "get it" or you don't.
Uncle LUI, it doesn't matter. WE KNOW the difference. The others could find it out too but they do not want. I have never heard Zeani live. I have discovered her when I was 14, through her only 2 studio recordings, Tosca and LaTraviata, with Romanian Electrecord.
Truer words were never spoken! I have just now learned of this amazing artist, and shocked that I've never heard her, or even OF her before, and yet she's on the exact same level of excellence as Callas and Sutherland! I'm soo thrilled to have now learned of her!
Zeani sang this role for the dublin grand opera society many years ago,she is a fantastic old school soprano,one of the best and her traviata duet with herlea is in my humble opinion the greatest ive ever heard,you are quite correct,yesterdays singers were far better,and better trained

I was at her fabulous Violetta debut at the Met, however, I don't recall a broadcast. All i remember is 2 evening performances...
Bruno Prevedi was tremendous too , a beautiful voice and singing .

i think the tone in her voice is some kind of dark but i like it so much how she transports the strong feeling. the first violetta i hear wich is really dying and feeling the pain.

@CharlotteinWeimar This is sooooooo right Yv.... er.. Charlotte ;) Callas and Zeani have two different ways of portraying Violetta... Both make me cry... For two different reasons.. But this performance is probably more intense than any other Traviatas.. Especially when Alfredo comes in..!!!! BRAVA ZEANI!!!

fabulous.. definitive... exquisite.
It is the prompter, positioned in the prompt box, centre stage, at the feet of the singers and much closer to them than the conductor. In fact when you are on stage in as large an opera house as the Met, the prompter is an absolutely vital link in keeping everything running smoothly.

Spuneam că sunt impresionat de faptul că încă se mai ascultă și acum. De aceea nu spun adio trecutului. Astfel de spectacole au fost și sunt excepționale.
Cât de nepriceput aș fi în ceea ce privește muzica, nu se poate să nu mă impresioneze atât opera lui Verdi, cât și interpretarea, vocea, talentul, seriozitatea și înțelepciunea ( am uitat ceva?) extraordinarei doamne Virginia Zeani.
S-auzim de bine.

LISTEN to CLAUDIA MUZIO who preceeded her and influenced CALLAS as well.
Virginia Zeani studied with the great tenor Aureliano Pertile who had often sung with Claudia Muzio and he told her how much she reminded him of Muzio. Because recordings of Muzio were not readily available, Zeani was only able to hear her voice many years later

Dopo callas? Ma Che noia! Che noia sempre sti paragoni con una cantante eccellente ma sopravalutata! Il 900, almeno quello provvisto di registrazioni, ha contato almeno 10 violette migliori di quella della callas, Che manco era adatta al ruolo. Qui la zeani é Anni luce sopra alla callas.

Signorina, LA CALLAS ES ÚNICA, pero en gustos se descalifican cantantes. En La Callas se juntaron, inteligencia, emoción y caracterización del personaje.@@carlabruscolini9877
She is one of the greatest, together with Gencer and Olivero. I prefer this sopranos more than the (in my opinion !)overrated Callas en Tebaldi. They had the bad luck that C&T better relations had with the scandalpress en de recordcompanies. Nevertheless; they left us over 100 pirate CDs !
