CANTUS: Stars by Ēriks Ešenvalds
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 кві 2020
- Here is the eighth installment from Cantus’ COVID-19 Sessions recorded live on March 17, 19, and 20.
The beauty and loneliness in Sara Teasdale’s poem "Stars" are captured perfectly by composer Ēriks Ešenvalds. We have all gazed up at the night sky with wonder at its majesty, and Ešenvalds’ piece captures Teasdale’s words elegantly.
We chose to record in the underground Westminster parking garage first for its acoustic, which gives the piece a stunning aural dimension. It has since taken on a deeper meaning and serves as a metaphor for those of us feeling increasingly trapped and isolated. We sing a song about the stars, 50 feet underground.
----
Alone in the night
On a dark hill
With pines around me
Spicy and still
And a heaven full of stars
Over my head
White and topaz
And misty red;
Myriads with beating
Hearts of fire
The aeons
Cannot vex or tire;
Up the dome of heaven
Like a great hill
I watch them marching
Stately and still
And I know that I
Am honored to be
Witness
Of so much majesty

Came here from professor Felipe Scagliusi, he was sharing a set of contemporary composers he likes and does a very good job. I'm glad to see that classical music is not dead
imagine you were walking in this car garage, and then hear this otherworldly sound start playing. I'd imagine that, on that day, i was gonna die from a dramatic heart attack in that parking garage! Season finale.
Truly beautiful though.
Fantastic! Thinking out of the box during this pandemic. The acoustics of the underground garage are ethereal. Thank you.
Stunning work, unanimous in creative approach and hauntingly sonorous.
A release in the universe of dormant anxieties, fears and hopes that is needed and greatly appreciated now. Thank you.
I don't think I could have said it any better myself!
Im glad to have stumbled across this. You have the most beautiful sound❤❤❤❤❤
You bring such beauty to this stark place. Thanks so much for spreading light into these dark times.
Absolutely breathtaking. Thank you for sharing the beauty of your voices and creativity!
Ahh... Please keep recording and releasing these videos! Your balance and blend have been so sweet recently. We need this in a time of mistrust and divisiveness.
i sang this song in an all state performance this time last year. just a month before this was recorded. it was the last thing i did before COVID-19 isolated me and my family. it will always be the most affecting song i have ever performed. thank you for sharing this music, i will never, ever forget it.
Thanks for sharing your story, Molly, and I'm glad you get to carry this song with you. Hopefully, we can all get back to singing and being together soon. ❤️
Gorgeous singing and rich musical setting of Teasdale words!
This is on my "Peaceful" playlist. I listen to your music so often to relax. I've noticed that you guys often gently sway when you sing - I generally don't see this in the English ensembles I follow - different training? Whatever it is, it's beautifully calming and I think your energy comes through your singing. Thankyou. ❤️
stunningly beautiful...
Whoah, just gorgeous! I thought one of the crystals would surely shatter in the midst of such full beautiful clear tones. Thank you.
What a mesmerizing, otherworldly sound! Amazing performance guys, thanks. I can't wait til the COVID-19 thing is done and you're back on the road again doing what you do so amazingly well. Until then we have these videos!
This is extraordinarily lush. Love it, thank you!
Merci I was very moved by this unusual performance which to me shows how heaven is also on earth
Wow - amazing version - amazing singing - amazing work!
This is beautiful. I am enjoying all of your works. It also reminds me of how creative we had to be during the pandemic. My high school aged son and his friends would meet up in a parking garage and have poker games. We were all wondering what happened to our folding card tables and chairs. The D.A.R.E. officer from town (for non-Americans, the local police officer who would go into schools and educate the children about the dangers of drugs, so they knew the kids) would stop by and hang out. He never busted them ( I think they might have had some secret White Claws). I think Officer Phil thought they were rather ingenious.
So gorgeous! Y'all have such great ideas.
Stunning. Thank you.
So beautiful!
Нет слов,шикарно !!!
This is phenomenal
Thank you very much for the amazing version!!! 🙏🥰
Thank you!
Gostaria que essa música tivesse feito parte da trilha sonora de Interestelar.
I'm singing this song with my high school choir for our Christmas concert in two weeks, and getting to hear/watch this has made me infinitely more excited than I already was! Stars is a piece that my conductor/teacher holds very close to his heart, and one that my brother sang when he was in chorus, so I could not be happier to carry on this ethereal legacy of cosmic music! This was such a genuine joy to listen to and I cannot wait to perform it myself, Y'all had me breathless
It’s a super fun piece to perform- have a great time at the Christmas concert!
Stunning!
Thank you, Jane!
Je vais chercher un verre à lever à la beauté de votre performance... Mais qui a pris tous les verres?
