  • Enjoy the ninth performance from Cantus’ COVID-19 Sessions recorded live on March 17, 19, and 20.
    Twenty-five years ago when Cantus began with four undergraduate students at St. Olaf College, they first expanded their numbers up to seven in order to sing this very song.
    Those founding members were inspired by the chamber process whose collaborative tenants inform everything we do at Cantus to this day. They were also inspired by Chanticleer and their model of supporting musicians full-time in their music-making.
    Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria" has become an audience and ensemble favorite at Cantus in no small part because of Chanticleer’s example.
    As you take in the beautiful lines and harmonies of this piece, we hope you think of those in your own life who have inspired you to reach for new heights and become the best version of you.

    What a treat! I'm a Lutheran pastor, and my wife is Catholic. On July 11, 2015 a group of friends sang this song at our wedding to honor her history.

    I've come back to this recording several times now, one of my very favorites. So beautifully done.

    As a singer who also has been fascinated with acoustics most of my adult life, it is inspiring to hear such pristine singing in truly wonderfully unique settings.

    Wow. Such a different room than the 2011 performance. All of the parallel walls are adding lots of room modes and resonances. They needed to be corrected for (as best they could) in post production.

    It’s fun to try and figure out who is singing your part. I sing choir 1 first tenor and think the person in the white shirt and black sweater sings that part.

    I wonder why the song was titled Ave Maria, but it is the Angelus prayer.

    • @jeanmo22
      @jeanmo22 2 роки тому

      Because it becomes the Ave Maria- Ave Maria is interspersed between each verse of the Angelus. The dual choirs mimic the call and response of the Hail Mary when prayed.

    • @L1011MD11
      @L1011MD11 2 роки тому

      @@jeanmo22 still the entire song is the Angelus prayer in Latin not the Ave Maria. If it was just the lyrics of Ave Maria, then it should be titled as such.

      @@L1011MD11 wow they should totally change it, good call man. the names of songs need to be clearly logical in the most reductionist way. poetic license shouldn't even be a thing.

    Beautiful performance! THANK YOU for singing out and for singing with vibrato! I get so tired of the ugly, white, vibrato-less sound of most vocal groups. Also, I clearly need to suck it up and get an Ipad. LOL.
