I love how your examples are straight to the point without trying to add extra comedy and whatnot. Very helpful keep up the good work, cheers!
Thanks. We hate videos that just go on and on. A little bit of personality is fine, but when it starts to take over what you are trying to show or tell, I just turn off.
PSA real quick.
When you're at the grocery store make sure you buy greaseproof paper/ parchment paper because the wax paper, freezer paper, ECT are normally right next to it and look pretty much identical but are not heat safe. Sometimes are cheaper. Also if you already have random kitchen paper at home check to see that it is parchment paper.
This might be a bigger issue in places that call it parchment paper, because I was not aware that it could be bought in white. I thought it was only available in parchment color, brown paper bag colour.
Four years later and this video is still helpful! Thank you! 🙌🏻
No problem!
Shower curtain is definitely the way to go. You should also talk about book lights, double diffusing the light by bouncing it and then diffusing them.
And don't forget black cloth to reduce spill.
And while on the topic of DIY grip things,
Black heavy duty plastic bags are great great ways to blackout windows.
Great tips and tricks. Simple and cheap I like that. I'm still very new with the lighting, so this helps me a lot.
Shower curtain is a great staple for diffusion , never thought about grease proof paper though! Definitely have to try that! Great video guys 👍🏻
Perfect, was looking at the best low cost ways to make some lighting for my daughters UA-cam videos, was heading around £100 until I saw this, so thanks guys
Glad we can help!
still gold, thanks for having a great back catalogue!
This was exactly what i was looking for. Thank you so much.
I’ve been looking for affordable diffusion methods. The first video I clicked on started with a $200 option 😂
But this was super super super helpful!! Thank you!
No problem! We use this method all the time in the studio. We have a pile of greaseproof paper and pegs just to diffuse lights.
I've been having issues with lighting my green screen and was was ready to pull the trigger on some soft box lights on Amazon and found this vid.!! Perfect solution!
I have several par can lights that you can change out the gels and what not. I traced the proper size of parchment paper I stole from our kitchen and voila!!
You still need a soft box, Geoff. Very the very simple reason that in order to get a really soft light source you need a large light soft. It's true that baking paper/diffused paper really works well at aiding in softening the light, but bringing a large light source close to your subject is the best and most practical solution. You can even combine the two.
Brilliant gentlemen. Just saved me a wad. Well done, and thanks for the side-by-side shot comparisons!
No problem!
Absolutely brilliant! Thanks guys!
These ideas are brilliant, we'll definitely be giving them a go on our channel.
I found this channel some days ago and I can honestly say, never have I ever subscribed to such an underrated channel!
You deserve to have at least 100 times more subscribers than what you just achieved today!
+yonut98neq Very kind words, thank you!
It's my pleasure as a 17-year-old who is looking forward to becoming a filmmaker to watch such tutorials, and tips&tricks videos!
In case you would like to review my work (which is based only on knowledge I have acquired through UA-cam), I would be grateful if you checked out my ("official") channel where I post it: /channel/UCxewjzHXWd34fO7SvyxvH5w
Your link doesn't seem to work. Want to send it over in a private message?

I would never have given that a thought, this is genius!
Brilliant stuff! Really helpful. Thanks for the awesome video!
Cheers Brenton!
Love this channel so far!
Thanks John!
great vid. simple short and gets right to the point
Cheers Liam!
We call it Parchment paper here in Canada
In America too
@@hunter1586 Wax paper
Billkwando we have wax paper and parchment paper
I use the round window blinds as well! LOL. Great video!
You guys should have so many more subs. Your videos are straight to the point and informative, not to mentioned edited really well. I don't understand why you don't more views when there's literally thousands of people looking for info like this.
Appreciate the support, Deimos! As long as people are learning from our mistakes and advice, that's all that matters. We aren't 'viral' like some channels but we love making films and this channel serves that purpose. (More subs would be nice though...)
This video was super helpful!!! And practical thank you!
Hope it helps!
Loved these techniques, thank you!
Glad you like them!
Thank-you for this very helpful idea! 😀😉
WOW! YOU ARE THE BEST!
En español es papel pergamino o papel de cocina, en mi país le decimos papel manteca. Great video!
Just what I’ve been looking for ! Thanks
Glad we could help!
Man this makes me excited to get creative with materials! Thanks guys, boutta grab a Danny!
That's great to hear. We might need to get grab a Danny on a t-shirt.
Dude, I recently used baking paper with a Lowel omni 500 watt light for a presentation I had to do and it worked a treat. An excellent diffuser for a cheap price.
Great to hear! We have a stack of these in the studio for when we need a quick and dirty diffusion. They sit right beside the black wrap.
Great video, fellas!
This was great!
Awsome! Thank you very much brother.
Superb! Will give it a go.
Awesome :D
i love the idea~!! thanks for this!!
Awesome!!!
Great video, super helpful. thanks man!
No problem!
Wonderful wonderful wonderful wonderful. Thank you so much. God bless you
PERFECT!! thankyou thankyou thankyou
If you are Not Shooting a Noir Scene you are Here on a really great was. Filmmaking is Problem solving. Love your clever ideas and was to think solutions Out.
man it works for me, thanks a lot, my DIY nanoleaf panel project is now complete, thanks for 10 stars advise.
No problem! Hope it helped :D
love it!
Amazing thank you !!
My favorite and maybe easiest method to soften light it to bounce off a ceiling or wall. While it may not work for every shot it crates amazingly soft smooth light. Don't forget that Harsh light can also be cinematic of used correctly.
I think I might have to Subscribe. :)
The ceiling is another great method and I agree with harsh light as well. We just shot a music video and that was all we used, it worked great.
You need a light that you can angle upwards, though. LED panels aren't very flexible in that regard and that's what most of us are using........................................
Thank you, I was looking for some way to defuse the lighting from my windows by my computer and the parchment paper worked out well (I've never seen grease paper in the states)
thank You dear so so so so so so so much muaaaaaa Love you and your Lighting Trick
really useful video , thanks.
No problem!
👏🏾… so helpful💯
Pure genius
Will deffinitely add that grease paper to my collection of weird stuff for lighting haha
Woooooow genius!!!
Greaseproof paper, blinds, shower curtains.
Genius.
I like your thinking🤙
We've been using them for years, and all are super cheap.
Great video
nice video and thanks for helping
No problem!
Holy shit this is gold, thanks for these tips!
No problem!
Thank you!
Amazzzzzzzzinggg
I use a diy led panel which is very bright :)).I will try to add bake paper to see if it looks better
Thanks!
Thoroughly enjoyed this episode lads, great ideas.
Am off to raid my mams kitchen for a Danny :)
+Craig Hunter thank you, Craig!
Thank you 🙏
No problem Doc!
You sir are a genius
A shower curtain, brilliant and cheap:-)
Really what i like in your tutorials you are using cheap fixtures like redhead, This encourge me to request from you to create lighting series for horror or noir lighting, by using cheap fixtures like redhead and fresenal 2k and 2k, Hoping you think in my suggestion
6 Years Later, this video still helpful.
awesome
Hope it helps!
I know this video is a few years old but still useful. Thanks much
Glad it helped. We still use it too.
Fantastic help. I am creating a video box for my woodworking and the diffusion on the LED shoplights I have isn’t enough. The Dannys should work great.
Awesome! Glad we can help :)
That's a cool project. Let us know how it works.
The Film Look It did well. Greatly reduced harsh shadows. I’ll send a link to the final video when it’s done.
I've been using Danny's for ages. Nice to know someone else does. I don't feel so silly now xD
They also work great on green screens.
You have to call them Danny's from now on, KD! We're counting on you. 40 years from now we wanna be on set and hear someone call it a Danny.
@@TheFilmLook It will be done
and wihtout the diffuse looks much better
Great material, thanks a lot!! I wonder how's the host lit. What's the lighting set up there?
We have a video on that! ua-cam.com/video/A5xR_dgqDrc/v-deo.html
Great video! What filter do I use to get those cool accents?
You can get different colour gels which go on the front of your light.
I learned a lot
Great to hear!
All of that beautiful diffusion from tissue paper?!
Why didn't I find this sooner, I need to try this out :0
Please don't use tissue paper! Tissue paper is massively flammable. Only use oven-safe white paper - that way it is used to withstanding high temps.
@@TheFilmLook sorry, when I say tissue paper I mean wax paper! My bad, but my lights are LED panels and don’t get hot either way, thanks tho ;)
Hey guys, love the channel! Where do you get your can lights please?
Bought them a while back. Doesn't look like they do them anymore, sorry :(
🙌
Genius.
After 5 years, we still use these! We have every filmmaker we know calling them Danny's too.
I used the lights and i took the photo and it worked out great. Wish I could attach a photo
i saw in one shot that you use a 'feel world' monitor. and on the looks it seems that i have the same one... now my problems was with the battery and and where to find them , because mine stopped working just randomly and i can't get a cashback...
All you need is some Sony NPF batteries. Any size will work, but we prefer the NP-F 970s.
I have a 9x9x9 inch lightbox that has 2 led strip lights in the overhead panel. I want to photograph my cd collection, the actual cds not the cases. How should I go about diffusing the lighting? I'm using my cellphone's camera.
I have tota lights, they get very hot and I'm using the same tricks to defuse the light but i don't know how use gels, can you please help me how/which gels i can use???
Thanks for your amazing work.
Two main gels you can use are CTO (Colour Temperature Orange) and CTB (Colour Temperature Blue) Look at these - amzn.to/2OYVn8Q You can also get coloured gels, but try these first.
I don't want to rain on your parade but using a diffusion material so close to the lightsource hardly diffuses the light at all, which is why your before and after shots with your continuous lights are not dramatically different. The key to diffusion is to increase the SIZE of the lightsource relative to the subject which is why diffusion material fastened to rim of your circular light doesn't do anything since it is the same size as the rim that was providing light. All diffusion material does when it is placed that close to the light source is to reduce the intensity of the light rather than its' harshness. Covering up the window to diffuse the suns light works well and illustrates the principle I refer to.
I'm trying to use my regular lamps that are on my desk to better light my streaming setup. I use a pretty cheap webcam and it needs some help. I thought about taking off the lamp shaes but I need to make a box to point the light but also defuse it. Any ideas for that. I can use the dannys but I am at a loss on building the box itself.
As long as the lights don't get too hot, cardboard and tape does the trick!
GOD BLESS U
Greasproof paper is a great idea. Spent today trying to remove hotspots from a large green screen so hoping this will help.
How did it go?
Thanks for asking. As I am using LED lights I found the greasproof paper blocked too much light. I will use in other projects though so still a great idea. What did work was Laminating pouches. Before they go through a laminator they are slightly frosty and If doubled up they are subtle but perfect.
So intelligent
Maybe this is just the difference in name here in the states, or maybe I'm confused on the product altogether, but I’m pretty sure over here we call it "parchment paper." It's mean for the oven, just like you guys were using it. but for whatever reason, it's labelled as parchment paper in the US, I think
omg you guys are so cute
You're cuter 😍
I use paper towels taped onto my desk lamp 🔥
I hope you aren't using a hot bulb!
How I defuse a light? Well I start with cutting the red wire then the black If that fails I cut the white but never the green.
Comment of the year!
Butter paper
Is he talking about parchment paper?
Hmmm, interesting video you guys. Nice work indeed : D
Though I couldn't get my head around the different look that the light diffuse by the reflector's white fill give off when compared to the light diffused by the Ikea blinds. With both diffusion methods' key light giving of a opposite color temperatures. Would you say that they are the same? Albeit if they were diffused by the same key with the same color temperature.
Thanks guys (^^u)/
Budget diffusing methods will cause some colour tint one way or the other. We find the greaseproof paper warms the light a little, but its nothing to be too concerned with. A pro cinematographer would very likely disagree as they like everything as tight and accurate as possible, but for micro-budget movies, it gets the job done at a tenth of the price 👍
I don’t have the clips used tois there anything i can use instead?
We've used tape in a pinch when we had no more clothing pegs left. Could try that?
The Film Look I found a solution, I also dont think tape is safe to use because it could burn
Thank you i have a lot of grease proof papaer parchment. ,butter papar infact every kind of grease proofing ALHUMDULILLAH, as my channel is food channel
will greaseproof paper burn cz of tungsten heat ?
There will always be a danger when dealing with high temperate objects and materials. Grease proof paper is used for baking up to 220 degrees C, so it will take some heat before it bursts into flames. That being said, you want to make sure it doesn't make physical contact with the bulb. Always attach it to the front of the panel with at last an inch or two from the bulb itself. We haven't had any problems with it on the 800w lights, but we can't guarantee other lights. So, just make sure you have your extinguisher handy (as you should with hot lights anyway).
used it on me led lights, for me camper van, it works, now dont get blinded
You should continue naming your equipment :D
We do! Here is an episode on it: ua-cam.com/video/Wq0XsCysESw/v-deo.html
Yeah remember that one :)@@TheFilmLook
Is the panel made from cotton?
The diffusion? It's made some a type of paper
hip pop video mode :))
haha
How much watt's house hold bulbs can you do in that fixture?
It's just a normal house hold bulb fixture, we are currently running 100w bulbs in it right now. If you need a fixture that can hold a higher watt bulb you can find them in pet stores, were you would add a light for some form of reptile. It's a strange place to find filmmaking equipment.
Thanks! Keep up the good work!
