Hobby for me too. I stay up late in the garage listening to music and taking apart junk. I try and pre-sort in buckets, then microscrap. I love silver buttons. They are everywhere when you know where to look! gold plated stuff and computer scrap is great. It’s always work to get the tin/ferrous material out of the way. I’m constantly taking iron and aluminum to the yard, but save up the copper and brass and wire for a good payout!
Oh Ian, you must be getting old to let the store sell you Duff beer 😉 We got a heatwave here as well and it's hot in the buses while working on them 😓 My boys learned it by now that when scrapping, it all adds up as a scrappers first comandment.
I really enjoyed this video Ian..I had copper fever when I was an electrician...made lots of good money stripping wire..love the a/c unit hack..and those arms!..ouch....🤜👍
Good work mate. Those blunt wire cutters are actually thin sheet metal cutters. They are hopeless for cutting wire even when new but try them on tin sheet and they are great. Looks like your trustee hammer will do most jobs anyway. Keep it up. A great video. Regards
Thank you for giving what I do a name. I have never heard micro-scrapping either. One of the my next projects is making a copper wire press with 2x4s. I saw a youtube video on it and it looks like a good way to condense a 5 gallon bucket into two smaller copper wire bricks.
It's 100+ F over here too, NOT melting any metals this week, not doing much scrapping either, good thing I got lots of video to edit in a cool room 👍👍👍
Reminds me of a time back when I was working on a lot of mobile plant machinery, I used to change batteries, turbos, starter motors and alternators, they never were returned to the works they were just dumped, so I used to collect them up and when I had a van load I would take them to this guy who paid me well for them. I earned a pretty penny from it, I'm not talking a few quid I'm talking big money. So yeah it's definitely worth collecting it up and I didn't even have to do anything to the stuff I collected up.
I have to get the Man Shed set up with WiFi or something, brilliant idea to do your scrapper while watching scrapping videos Ian! I have another milk crate of junk to tek to bits.
I didn't realize there was so much copper in the microwave motor. I really enjoy micro scrapping so Im glad I found your channel. Your shop is small but well organized.
Some other micro scrap is breakers. I have a ton of them for no reason, and I just smash them with a hammer, take all the things I want, and move onto the next one. I have so many I could do it all day and still have more. It’s kinda insane but I’ll take it. I know I’m late but good video.
Ian , I've been at this for years !! lol I have pots of all sorts of stuff all over the place !! Those ferris transformer rings ( I can't for the life of me remember what they are called ) as long as they are magnetic my scrappy takes them in with steel and iron , they have some weight to them and add up quickly, I don't normally mess about with iron as I don't have the space to save it but I keep the heavy stuff . Great vid mate, have a good holiday !!
i also do micro scrapping. it all depends if i have more bigger & valuable stuff to pick up or not- when things are quiet, it makes sense to spend some time doing micro scrapping.
very good info ian did not think of smashing the fuses up learn some thing new in this game every day do another on miro scrapping when you come of holiday as intersting not many show like that any way have a lovley holiday and see you when back cheers
That also happens to me, however I then get annoyed take it as a personal insult and will destroy the item just to prove I won’t be beaten. Reminds me I need to catch up on your vids.
New guy here, those tin snips have had there chips mate, get to screw fix!😂 good video anyway, micro scrapping is allright on a rainy day I suppose. All money in the sky rocket
I have ~50kg of steel screws, nails, ferrite mess etc from scrapping, how should i take to the scrapyard? Is it ok if i fit in some empty paint boxes? I dont want to damage anyones tires while they visit the scrapyard...
I'm sure your yard will take them whatevery the container. I dont weigh in Iron or shred, but dont expect much say 12p - 15p a KKG SO £5 OR £6 GBP Rates do vary across the world
I periodically do micro scrapping. I am 46 on disability. Major accidents and concussions. I didn’t worry about asbestos 20 years ago working on floors and insulation. I was a tough guy ya know. More like stupid. Now I scrap to get by. Thanks Ian. Your thorough and get back to us. You rock man. Thanks.
David Baker hmmm like you I did things years ago working in a scrapyard would makes ya hair curl, I stripped bakers ovens which had asbestos 2 ft thick. At 60 I wonder will those times come back to bite me. Hell. I at least made it to 60. And in the UK well. It ain't kind to old folk.
Greg Dent Ahhh Greg, that is hard question to answer, if I only made £5 that would be £5 I didn’t have, I make more money per hour in my day job. But I have a desk job, doing this as a hobby, is different it’s almost therapeutic, you wouldn’t do microscrapping to earn a living, you would just go for Weight and volume. But to kind of answer your question, I expect to earn £1k at least over the year, I know street scrappers with a van who easily get £300 a day, but that’s not micro scrapping. Interesting comment thanks
Just love watching reminded me of the times I used to scrap with grandpa
James Howard those memories are the best
I love this guy just brute forces shit to what he wants we need more micro scrapping videos

Ferrite? They are a porcelain/clay material so infused with iron that they are scrap-worthy.

I still do. Watch the next vid or three
Hello Ian Matthews, I love Micro Scrapping. It's relaxing until I come across something that doesn't want to come apart.
That also happens to me, however I then get annoyed take it as a personal insult and will destroy the item just to prove I won’t be beaten.

Those buss fuses, the only thing of value is the copper and brass on the ends? I have one 3” or so in diameter and maybe 10” end to end.
David Baker big fuse
Bummer. Maybe I will list it for sale.

Hey mate. Ya. Every little bit helps! I should have used that line. Keep on hoarding.
How much do you make doing this micro scraping? Is it really worth it? Just wondering thats all.
Greg Dent Ahhh Greg, that is hard question to answer, if I only made £5 that would be £5 I didn’t have, I make more money per hour in my day job.
