    I read somewhere that Andy Roddick could throw a football 65 yards. Combine that tremendous natural arm speed with a highly efficient and technically sound serving motion, including huge leg drive, and the result is a 150 mph serve. In fact, I think I heard Roddick say that leg drive was a big key to his serve power.

    It sounds to me that shoulder over shoulder part is the most overlooked in rec tennis serve. Thanks, John.

    Excellent coach John! 👏 I feel as if I try to guide the racket behind the back and into contact, and you say you should feel the racket bounce into the hit with proper timing of the legs. I'll try this today coach! Keep up the great work 👍

      Hi Jose, So how was serve? If you are relaxed and sequence your movements, the racquet should fall and rise without any effort on your part. Best, John

    The reason why you’re not getting any power from the sitting position is because you are missing a key and important element in your demonstration! The whole concept of the serve is based on a very simple idea ….. the sling-shot effect! Think of the left hand holding the sling-shot. As you’re pulling on the rubber band, you’re holding back tremendous energy. The more you pull back , the more potential energy is created . When you release the rubber band , the potential energy is converted to kinetic energy. The kinetic energy is the power behind the serve! And it is tremendous!

      Also the rotation you speak of is part of that sling-shot effect !

    From my right shoulder to my right forearm and the snapping of the wrist then back to the right shoulder for the follow through.

      Thanks, but I'd like to know more what you mean by "wrist snap". Best, John

      @@PerformancePlusTennis Raise your serving arm to 12 o’clock with the palm facing upwards. Now slowly bring the arm down while keeping the palm of the hand extended facing outward. Then do it again. Bring the arm slowly down but now ….. supinate and flex the hand slowly . Do this a few times until you get the feel of the power of the right arm. Then around 11 o’clock, snap the wrist to around 9 o’clock !! Your fingers should be pointing 9 o’clock. The snapping of the hand transfers all that kinetic energy that you’ve been building up in your arm to that single point ….. the racquet face.

    Hi! Just arrived at your channel.
    If I may, I’d like to ask: What amount of the rotation of the shoulders in the serve due you deduce is played by the obliques vs the abdominals and muscles of the back? And, would you describe the serve as a ‘upward striking motion’ or a (racket) throwing motion, or a mix? Thx.

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  2 місяці тому +1

      Hi and welcome to the channel! Thanks for your feedback and great question! Certainly the abdominal and oblique muscles play a role in creating stability and delivering power. I do like the hips and shoulders to be in alignment to avoid over twisting and losing power.

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  2 місяці тому +1

      And the serving motion is definitely a throwing motion that is upward into the ball, so it is an upward throwing motion.

  • @rds4629
    @rds4629 2 місяці тому

    so for the kick serve, we try not to rotate forward, so is the power coming from shoulder/shoulder rotation?

    You can be on you knees and serve 70-80 percent of your top serve speed given all other factors are the same in terms of serve execution. Answer? Most of your serve power comes from the arm and upper body rotation combined with the proper racquet drop and forearm pronation through the shot.

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  3 місяці тому

      Thanks James for your perspective. However, the arm itself, including the racquet drop and pronation will produce very little power as I presented in the video. Try it for yourself: Sit in a chair with your back stable against the back of the chair to eliminate any shoulder rotation...simply isolate the arm while your body is perfectly still, and let me know the results. Thank you, John

      @@PerformancePlusTennis I don't' think you read my post closely. It includes "upper body rotation." It's NOT all about just the arm. Never claimed that.
