Great content. The toss is 100% the key to a consistent serve. The toss is equivalent to footwork on a groundstroke.

There are so many variables in play when you serve in Tennis:
    1) Height of the ball meassured from the surface as you hit the ball
    2) Distance of the ball, as you measure from the base line ( towards the front...towards the net), where you hit the ball.
    3) Horizontal Distance ( ~along the base line) of the ball from your shoulder, as you hit the ball.
    4) Where in the surface of the string the ball is being contacted while hitting
    5) Height of the server
    6) At what point of the ball you hit it?
(Consider the top of the ball as Zero degree and
bottom of the ball as 180 degree).

Points 1), 2) and 3) are indicating the 3 dimensional position of the ball when the server is about to hit the ball.
Even, if you are able to control the positions 1,2,3 and 4 as constant,
    - 5th variable, the height of the player,
has to be considered to find out at what point of the ball ( Refer 5) above), to hit an accurate serve.

To keep the three dimensional position of the ball ( while striking the ball), as constant, ( or at least with an error margin of +/- 10%),
one needs to work so so... hard.
Fortunately the Error margin, mentioned above, is acceptable, as we are gifted with a box, (which is sufficiently big enough) within which we are allowed to serve.
If we can get take videos from below, we may be able to find out at what point ( 10 deg or 45 deg or 90 deg or 110 deg or 120 deg), the ball is being hit while serving.

Wow! Thank you so much John for making this video. It’s the only one I’ve seen that explains all the connections between throwing a ball and serving that also addresses head position, contact point and extension. I can throw a ball accurately but my serve is poor for the reasons you’ve mentioned. I really wish I’d known all this years ago. Have a great day because you’ve given me a great start to mine! Best wishes.

    Hi John,
Your video is excellent and I have seen a lot of videos on the serve. I videoed mine and I am horrified to see that my arm extends up and forward at contact but my racket is actually tilted back! What do you think is going on with that? Maybe I’m not swinging early enough so the ball is too low to have the racket in a line with my arm? Ugh 😮

Hi Dawn, First of all, please accept my apology for the very delayed reply. May has been a crazy month, including having the flu recently. Thanks for your kind feedback. I would have to see your serve to make any recommendations. I do offer a comprehensive video review service that so many of my students find very beneficial. Here is a link to the information: performanceplustennis.com/performance-plus-serve-stroke-video-analysis-description/. Please let me know if you have questions or I can assist. Kindly, John

How should you account for the extra height of the jump upwards as you uncoil and kinda launch upwards at the ball / into the court? Just toss a bit higher and farther out, I guess?

Certainly you need to blend the height of your toss with your tempo, sequencing and movement upward to the ball to achieve the ideal contact. Best to explain through a video, which I will produce in the near future. Best, John
