What made you get the 5 over the 4.25? That’s a lot of slide/barrel.

I applaud your entire approach to this pistol. You have been honest and just factual vs the typical buzz word soup that most EwwTubers use to put together the fast media for clicks. Good job and excited to see the next chapter!

I bought a 4.25” Prodigy about a year ago and have put close to 2,000 rounds through it. I put 1,000 rounds through it bone stock and then sent it to Skips Gunz for the EGW ignition kit, Atlas flat trigger, 8 lb recoil spring and buffer and fully tuned and its even better now and it’s been perfectly reliable the entire time. It’s my favorite pistol that I own!

Great review!! I bought my 5 inch within the first month of release. First range trip of 400 rnds I had about 12 to 15 failure to go into battery. Tap the back of the slide and it was fine. I kept oiling it while shooting. After the first range trip I bought the one piece Dawson Precision guide rob with a 10 lb spring. No issues since and I'm at 1600 rnds to date. The gun is a dream to shoot and very accurate! Almost like cheating!! Once again great review and love the channel!

Excellent review. Beautiful quality handgun. $1200 The Staccato with the plastic trigger and outrageous prices. Prefer the design of the Prodigy. I'll put aftermarket parts $250. And make it my own. Plus you have to love the steel slide and frame. Heavy but accurate. And easy to shoot. Waiting on the holidays to see if price drops. PEACE

I bought the 5in probably a little over a year ago. It would not chamber rounds properly so was basically a expensive paper weight..... so contacted springfield and they had me send it in. They Had it for about 4 weeks and now its worked like a champ with 0 issues. Not sure what they did but Springfields customer service was awesome. I own several brands of firearms (h&k, sig, arma lite, etc) and own 4 other springfield pistols one being a elite 10mm and had 0 issues. Own a springfield hellion with 0 issues. So the 2011 was only one i had issues with, but they took care of me and so they're still an option when shopping for a gun for me

I got the 4.25 a few months after the initial release, I had seen a lot of mixed reviews and was a bit skeptical but I am a Springfield fan and Ive wanted a 2011 for a while so I decided to try it. Im 1300rds in and not a single problem. I did change the guide rod for a one piece and I just ordered the extended slide stop, and I have added a Holosun red dot. Everything else is stock, it's a great gun and I am glad I picked one up. No regrets here. Great review.

If your someone like me that has never handled a 2011 before hand . The 4.25 prodigy is the best shooting handgun I ever owned …. Overall I prefer it over my g34 and trp operator

I will say I shot the 1911 DS (both the 5” and the 4.25”) at a range unveiling event and they had nothing but problems. Now that being said it was the unveiling of the gun so it was literally the first batch they made and there’s no telling how many rounds were through the gun without cleaning before I shot them. They were very sticky like they had lots of carbon build up in the slide. Aside from that the gun was pretty comfortable to shoot, trigger wasn’t bad recoil was soft, gun had moderate texture that provided sufficient grip. I was not a fan of the controls on the gun (that can be changed through the aftermarket). I didn’t have nearly the amount of time behind these guns as this review, so I’d say this review is a pretty good representation of how the gun actually works over time

I bought my Prodigy 4.25" on the first run of them in September. I really like the pistol, BUT, it's back at Springfield for warranty for the 3rd time. Each time I've filed a warranty claim I've also sent them pictures or video of the pistol malfunctioning. And I run my other 2011's and Double stacks without experiencing the issues I'm experiencing with the Prodigy. I'm glad at least the subsequent versions of the pistol seem to be working as expected.

Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I totally agree with you 100% some bad batches come out of a company but that does not mark them as all trash. Like PSA came out with their sabre dagger and some were flawed but not all were trash. Just wanted to thank you for making good informative content we need more of that on the web.

Upgrading the Prodigy is definitely worth it. I prefer tuning my 5” prodigy to my Staccato p in steel challenge. Mine has had the works, v8 ports almost entirely eliminated recoil, lighting cuts on the slide, 2.5# glass rod trigger the gun runs.
I will say mine was a problematic one at first nothing major all easy fixes at home, it was a first day launch gun. My duramags were horribly out of spec (atlas gun works recommended spec) mine did have cycling issues only on 147 FP once mags were tuned they ran 147FP fine. I still prefer the build quality of staccato mags. I want to try a metal grip module for mine also, but as of now my prodigy runs amazing, my favorite gun, even compared to some of my zev Glocks, open Glocks, compensated FN 509s, none of them run as fast or flat as that Prodigy.
I will 100% admit I bought it with the full intention of shit posting it and how it was swish app staccato but quickly had a change of heart after I really started running it.

In the last two years Springfield has brought out two iconic, (starting to hate that term), single action guns, their rendering of the Browning High Power, the SA-35, and of course the Prodigy. Both had issues, but it appears that the first batch of beta testing has allowed them to work out the issues on both platforms.
Solid review, and for what it is worth, you don’t come close to putting out a shill vibe.😎✌️

@@TheRancor53 Leaning towards the Legion as I started shooting with P-Series Sigs but have never owned a 9mm P226. But yeah if going the Prodigy route my thought was getting work done to tune it/customize it if I ended up having issues and still likely be less than a Staccato. And even if exceeded, I’d have something customized to my liking. Guess the answer is both, lol, just a matter of which is first.

I wanted a staccoto c2 or cs and just can't drop that money. I then shoot and compared the staccot c2 to the prodigy and was like dame the prodigy shoot better and looks a hell of alot better then the staccoto. I was blown away. Unreal job springfiled I mean wow. You built my dream pistol . Dave at DSC Gunworks cuts the slides on the 5" and does an island comp on them like a staccato XC.. but only on the early ones, without the lightening cuts on the inside.. that's the only reason i know this.. he has pics on his site, showing the difference. he also offers a de-MIM service as well

  • @desertsoldier41
    @desertsoldier41 6 місяців тому

The primary problem I have seen with these is the disconnector. The tension and shape of the bevel causes a hangup on the breach face when returning to battery. I immediately performed an old technique of radiusing and ramping the disconnector rail on the slide. Basically the "Marvel cut". Usually with a 1911 (especially service grade models) the slide will wear in a groove to better mate to the disconnector over time. But the sharpness of the breech combined with the hardness of the forged slide will make it harder to break in. So a jewelers file and a sharpie marker to mark the contact point of the disconnector is all you need to make a ramp for the disconnector to easily slide up the rail. Once done not a single issue in 1500 rounds. Maybe a Lessing of disconnector spring tension will have a similar effect without grooving the slide. The side effects from this issue will include, failure to go into battery, failure to feed due to decreased slide velocity and loss of accuracy due to weak lockup.

I've got both with 5k on one and 4k on the other and the 4.25 is a better gun as far as slide to frame fit but the 5 inch is the better shooter. That extra weight just makes for an effortless shooting experience.

I want that 4.25" prodigy but my brain says to get the p365 Legion instead... Decisions. I think if I KNEW I was getting a perfect one I would go Prodigy. Springfield support told me all new ones have the fixes in place. That they stopped production ~2mo to get things fixed....which is why I keep going back and forth. Purpose is off body carry with optic.

    • @rdrgear
      @rdrgear  Рік тому +1

I feel the issues that occurred was a limited batch. With the amount of safariland holsters we sell for the prodigy the issues have been resolved.
I am not 100% sure the price of the new macro is inline with what you are getting. The standard macro works great. And you can always upgrade the frame later.

    • @66racer
      @66racer Рік тому

@@rdrgear I think you may be right. My wife struggles to rack my p365 and gets frustrated when trying to show her other ways to rack the slide but the 4.25" Prodigy she was able to do quite easily.
It was about the 10-12mo mark of the P365 release when I chose to get my sample and it has been flawless all these years. I guess I may do the same gamble on the Springfield.
The thing I like about the p365 legion is that it is turnkey and 17rd mags will work on my p365 too. The added weight will hopefully allow my wife to feel comfortable practicing with it too. Plus being turnkey, will save me time from the rabbit hole of researching mods. Heart says Prodigy but mind says Legion. We'll see which wins out lol

Real shame Springfield used a 3rd party company for the mags because just fixing the feed ramps cleared 90% of their issues when I talked to a rep. I just broke the bank on a Laugo Alien and uploading that soon to my channel "RackinCrew". I am hoping to start doing comparison videos soon and reviewing some edc gear. Thanks again.

Enjoy the channel and I have the 4.25 DS, I'm just curious when people talk about the weight of the gun for everyday carry. I'm 68, with one lung and it's not heavy and unless you stick a light on it (and depending on the light and optic), it's the holster weight with the gun to accommodate the two addon's that make it cumbersome as an OWB. Add those to your normal Glock 19 and it's not that much different and you want some weight (at least I do).
If this gun has too much weight for EDC then you just need to get a Glock and leave it at that. Any DS is going to have additional weight unless you carry it without ammo.
I love mine. I think it's tunned well considering it's not a race gun but I'd have no problem running it in comp if I was younger.
No disrespect intended. Your learning curve is well above mine I just wanted to comment with a different opinion.
I own a number of handguns and rifles none of which are cheap. From a Shadow 2 to my Glock each of the 8 guns (and I love 1911's) run like scared cats.
Thank you for having great content. I am subbing

Apparently they've rectified the issue, but you can still do what others have.
A lot of people found it was an issue with the cerakote.
People started racking them a bunch then cleaning and racking a bunch then cleaning and repeat until they weren't getting dirty lube after racking. About 1k-2k racks. Also it helps with spring settle and some of the other mim parts smoothing out. Then they'd have zero issues

@rdrgear my 5 inch Prodigy has had only one malfunction in the 1,250 rounds I've put through it. It was during the very first magazine I put through the gun. It was the factory 17 round magazine and it choked on the second round. The slide didn't go fully into battery. Was it an out of spec ammo issue? Was it because the gun wasn't fully broken in yet? Was it because of a mag issue, since even the best 2011 magazines can be a little temperamental sometimes? I don't know. But it was the only issue and I haven't had any others. I also had the 4.25 inch version, that I bought about a month after I bought my 5 inch. I put 600 rounds through it without issue. I only sold it because I preferred the way the 5 inch shot. In my opinion the bad reviews are vastly over stated. I find it hard to believe that I got lucky twice. I may pick up another 4.25 inch Prodigy sometime. Who knows? But I agree with your opinion, based on my own experiences, that the Prodigy is good to go. It may not be as nice as my Staccato P DUO but it's so close in performance and overall shooting experience, including accuracy/grouping, that it's a negligible difference at best. I still tell people that ask about entry-level 2011's to pick one up.

Had the 5in. Kept having multiple issues. Emailed Springfield. No response. Tried four, FOUR different recoil springs, and a lighter hammer spring. Tried different guide rods. Nothing worked. Still had problems. It only made it through two mags without a malfunction, and that's because it was DRENCHED in oil.
I've never had that many problems out of a 9mm 1911 platform. I think I'll just stick to single stack 9mm 1911s... Lord knows I can't afford a Staccato.

I can’t imagine both pistols had zero issues.
I have one that is back at Springfield for the second time and it was the worst thing I’ve ever bought.
First range trip I cleaned and lubed it.
Got through 50 rounds but took about 150 attempts bc all I had was feeding issues.
I literally never had 3 successive rounds without failure
Sent it to Springfield and about 8 weeks later I take it out again.
    Much better
It now has 2-3 failures per magazine.
Even bought a $70 Staccato mag thinking that would help- it didn’t.
Sent it back and now I wait.

I do not buy a pistol within the first year. Issues will inevitably crop up. This issue was the internals. The disconnector especially. I just bought one in January 24, and have had no issues. However, it will be going to my gunsmith for mods. If you just want a good shooter, then buy it. Atlas and Staccato mags work great. Gun butter is good, but look at what Wilson, Infinity or Atlas recommend and use. If it is used in a $6000.00 pistol you know its good. They should not build up residue with time and heat.

I guess what gripes me the most about the Prodigy is they must have known there would be problems before the release to the public; essentially making their customers part of their R&D department. Harbor Freight is another example where customers are used in that manner. I'll buy some stuff at Harbor Freight just because their prices are fair, but while some of their products are good and a good value there are plenty of things (compressors, nail guns, powered hand tools, etc.) that I won't consider because value goes out the window when they don't function. In Harbor Freight's defense, I will say they seem to watch what is returned and why so they can improve.

The problem with this gun, is you either get one that works, or a complete turd. Me and a buddy got one within 3 days of each other. His was OK, but was completely missing a front sight. But that was an easy enough fix... otherwise, it seems to be running OK.
Mine, wouldn't empty a magazine without an issue. It went back and stayed there almost 2 months... Came back, and still didn't run. Back again for 5 weeks... Returned exactly the same... Now it's been back for the 3rd time for almost 2 months.
I put about 75 round thru a gun that I've owned for a year, and Springfield can't seem to fix it, or replace it.
When it comes home, I'm not even going to open the box... It's going on gunbroker with the backstory, and I'll take whatever I can get for it...
My FFL says he's returned half of the prodigys he's sold. That was my first red flag... meh. Just save up more, and buy the Staccato. Don't take a chance on one of these... It isn't worth the headaches.
