By paying for her own lawyer, she can skillfully evade telling the full truth to save her own skin. Cohen and Davidson were the criminals here. Cohen was allowed to plead guilty to a lesser offense he didn't actually do, rather than face trial for racketeering, extortion and tax evasion.

Cohen found women who could accuse Trump using attorney-client privileged information, then fed it to Davidson.
Davidson signed on these 2 women, promising they could quietly get a cut of the money. Davidson then sold the stories to Pecker at the National Enquirer and contacted Cohen to ask for money for an NDA.
Pecker would then go to Cohen to offer to kill the story for money.
Cohen paid Stormy from his own Home Equity Line of Credit when Trump refused to sign the NDA or pay and then got the money back from Trump Org through embezzlement and structuring by claiming that they were 'legal fees. He lied to Stormy that the NDA was in effect.
Cohen convinced Trump to pay Mc Dougal and warned that since neither Mc Dougal nor Stormy had an NDA, it could be bad for him.
Cohen then cheated on his taxes and caused the Trump Org to record the embezzled $150 k of money in the wrong category on their taxes as 'legal fees' rather than 'Casualty disaster of theft loss'.
The feds investigated and Cohen was charged and took a felony plea while Trump was found to be a victim of Cohen The IRS determined that the Trump org owed a few thousand in additional taxes but was an innocent victim of Cohen.
