I just saw an old friend of mine Chico Freeman who was playing at Buddha and pals in Bangkok he has been living in Switzerland for over ten years now and i agree with sonny Europe has always been a great place for jazz miles loved paris and Dexter..
So many jazz musicians have that chilled spirit vibe. They have to think so abstract and in-the-moment with their playing, and it comes across in their demeanour. Therapeutic to play and hear
Wise words from a wise man. I always said if i was born black and had the money i would move to europe (paris)....i saw and spoke with sonny in vancouver in 1976. He was very thoughtful and articulate as in this interview. Thank you bret for posting.
It is a very sad shame that Jazz, which is a American art form, is so unappreciated in United States. It has always been MUCH more appreciated and revered in Europe and in Japan, and a little later in many parts of Asia.
Merci, I like this interwiev. Sonny is a wise man. He tells the truth. The truth is that people france loves Jazz, they love music. June 21st is the music festival. Every year, all bands of all styles of music play in the streets, bars and restaurants. I love Sonny Rollins, he touches the heart because his life has been full of all kinds of experiences, enriching and musical Thanks Jazz Guy 🙏💙🙏
The French people and the Italian have the best sense for music in Europe only matched with the brazilian- a jam session in France is always a nice and pleasant thing 🤗
If these jazz giants knew back then what their music will means for people around the globe now, they probably got way different lives, better or worse, but sure different. Their records been reissued and sold in millions copies right now, while back in the 50's many were not appreciated enough, couldnt get good lable to contract with and such, thats kind of sad and amazing at the same time. Thx for posting this!
I's also true of other genres. Jimi Hendrix had to come to London to be appreciated. Not that the UK & Europe was or is free of racism, however no one would think it strange for black & white musicians to be sharing a stage, & the police wouldn't stop you all eating together, or staying in the same hotel after a gig.
Well, according to an interview entitled "Sonny Rolins Remembers Dizzy and Grover", which can be found in Jazz Video Guy's channel, this is from 2015, after Sonny stopped playing due to respiratory problems.
@@JazzVideoGuy In the 2000's Sonny cooperated with Eric Nisenson to make the biography 'Open Sky'. I read it a few months ago, and it's not terrible. My issue with a biography is that the person who wants to write a book about someone must seriously love them / their playing. This resulted in far too many paragraphs of waffle talking about how amazing and talented he is, we all know he is great and that's why we're reading!
Why move to Europe? Silly question for a Black man. Too late for my father and me, but for a Black man with transit fare moving to Europe was and is a better deal.
Great video! really hard to listen to though, i am professional sound editor, want me edit out the background noise that gets really loud in between sentences? Free of charge of course 😊

No, a string bean. Sadly, my lav mic and Zoom recorder quit and the ony audio left is this, which is horrid. But the content matters because of the subject and what he says.
Jazz Video Guy there are plugins that de-noise exactly this kind of audio (overly compressed speech) automaticly that work quite well, and many are even free.. I tell you this just in case you find yourself in the same situation, no critique here. Thanks a lot to you for your work, love this content!
Miles Davis visited Yugoslavia in 71' and 86' and was treated like a demigod. The only socialist country in Europe that could make that happen. ua-cam.com/video/vkTERfX81v0/v-deo.html
I hope Sonny stay with us for many more years to enjoy his greatness not just as a person but as a musician as well.

Chico is a citizen of the world.
The audio quality is unmatched. I can almost stand it enough to listen to the interview.

Yes, he is articulate and thoughtful, on the tenor sax and when he speaks.
Please stop calling black people "articulate."

This is awesome,
Great video, Brett. Of serious historical value.
Glad you enjoyed it
Its VERY simple: Jazz was much more appreciated overseas. Also black musicians weren't subjected to racism there. They were treated equally. Period.
Yup

What do you mean was/were... You mean IS/ARE. Hate to break it to you but Europe is home of jazz.
@@saturnative lol... Just because a few jazz musicians live in Europe doesn't make Europe the home of jazz.
I love this
I second the question! When is this interview from?
Well, according to an interview entitled "Sonny Rolins Remembers Dizzy and Grover", which can be found in Jazz Video Guy's channel, this is from 2015, after Sonny stopped playing due to respiratory problems.
You have to wonder why Mr. Rollins has never written an autobiography. I hope he does.
Someone is working on a Rollins biography at the present time, with his cooperation.

Not a silly question. It was about jazz musicians, for whom, as Sonny says, had a number of reasons to relocate

'Legit Music' is literally a term used to segregate 'Jazz Music'. Sonny was being diplomatic.
