Sonny Rollins is an American jazz tenor saxophonist and composer who is widely recognized as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians of all time. He started playing the saxophone at a young age and quickly gained fame as a musician in the early 1950s. He is known for his creative and explosive playing style, which is heavily influenced by Caribbean rhythms, and has released over sixty albums as a leader. His most famous recordings include "Valse Hot", "St. Thomas", and "Blue 7". Rollins left the jazz scene in 1961 to focus on his own music, but returned in the late 1960s to gain even more acclaim.

"When Sonny Rollins Speaks, We LIsten. When Sonny Rollins Plays, We Cheer". i couldn't agree more
Great Video! From Sonny’s response to the question to his performance to the audience’s reaction. Some things are right in this world. That’s why we need to “touch” Sonny.
Well said!
WOW!! He’s playing Mack the Knife like it’s the Greatest Song ever written! And he’s got the coolest, hippest, funkiest musicians, right there with Him, backbeat and all (Al Foster playing a Back Beat? Really?)! And Kill’n it!
Best version of Mack The Knife that I've ever heard! Thanks!
Wow. The pure creative ecstasy on Sonny's face at the end of his performance. That's one of the most iconic images of a jazzman I've ever seen.
Agreed
Master
A Master
Thank you, Sonny and Bret😎🌹😎🌹
Ahhh, Mack the Knife is just so bloody brilliant .....
SOnny - one of the absolute greatest!!!! A real hero to me.
Thank you Jazz Video Guy! You are awesome! I love listening to Sonny speak and play!

Sonny's a very intelligent, well spoken man.
Intergalactic Treasure
Great video.
Great!!!
Thanks for posting. We love Sonny. Very inspiring character.
👏👏👏🎤🎷 This is Totally Awesome: the interview and, of course, Sonny’s masterful cut of The Knife. THANK YOU! 👏👏
You gotta admire a person who can be both humble and extremely well-defined!
Sonny brings the Heat on this one!! As well, the video quality and sound quality are clear and crisp, for something from 1981. I really enjoyed the close-ups of Sonny's face, like you're sitting front row for an unforgettable set. And his bandmates are all smiling ear-to-ear, what a scene, man!
... AND if course the Goliath PLAYING!! Never has Mack the Knife been so excitingly played .. UNLESS anyone can give us a reference to SOME OTHER Titan.
Listen and cheer, Sonny is here!
🌹
To hear from a guy who achieved what the rest of us would regard as the absolute pinnacle of artistic achievement, and speak with such humility, without pretension, and ‘yeah I still practise’. I hope these videos, the new biography, all the material that has become available so late in his life, has the profound influence it should on future generations of musicians.
A great interview!
Thank you.
FANTASTIC....
You caught the smile right after that expression at European concert climax!
yup
Thank you Bret! great “colossal” post. We all love the immense Sony. PS I put the video on my Favorites playlist; hope this will help… All the best! maybe ☮️on🌎🌍🌏
Well worth watching a second time!! 👍
Sonny in all of his magnificence.
Thank you for posting! So wonderful!
Glad you enjoyed!
Sonny Rollins played on a classic Bud Powell session in 1949, when he was 18 years old.
He may not play anymore, but he's never stopped developing.
Legend.
Great player and great human being.
true dat
Simplest chord changes, of which Sonny makes a most creative and enjoyable time! 😊
So great on "Mack the Knife". Thanks Bret
Incredible…!
Classic interview.
A,ll tenor players should watch this.
I "Like Sonny"...
3:18 what song is this
Jazz will not disappear with Sonny Rollins. He and his contemporaries have inspired young people around the world. Here is a song from his repertoire played (not as a sax number) by a group of young artists from Barcelona: ua-cam.com/video/7D4XkUG_hlo/v-deo.html
Plenty of humour!!! I guess Newk has knowledge and insight on his audience, to figure when some excitement can be generated in amongst the serious exploration that he grapples with
