    Great to see a video that’s about PHOTOGRAPHY and not about KIT. I’ve just unsubscribed from most bloggers as it’s all about cameras and pixels and all that shit. Keep it going and the idea of an assignment is a great ones. Thanks.

    Nice video. Great content and advice. I'm sick of lens and camera review videos. I tell people all the time that photographs need a place within a body of work. Otherwise they are just one offs and no one will care about them. Photographs are like sentences and very rarely is a single sentence going to captivate anyone. Multiple sentences need to be grouped together in the form of an essay or a book to form a complete idea.

    Totally agree, following an assignment helps the photography and the photographer, you need to think about your pictures as a whole and not as a single work, trying to be consistent. It's challenging but meaningful, much better than producing a single image I think.

    There is a very interesting aspect about the way "The Americans" is edited that was shown to me by one of my photographic mentors, which I would probably have had a really hard time noticing by myself, and it somehow explains why the book, not just the individual pictures, is so good and stands out in the history of photography. Every picture is related to the previous one and the next one by some element. It could be the decreasing amount of people in the picture, or the inverted balance of black and white surfaces, or the object depicted being draped in a piece of cloth. That principle provides the book with a kind of free-floating structure for which it is know as a relative of the "stream of consciousness" style in literature. A kind of narrative, in the end, but an intrinsically photographic one.

    Good to see you bank Travis. Your videos seem to inspire me. I would love to do an assignment. Finding the time is a problem though and unfortunately I don’t live in a town that would inspire anyone photographically. But I went to London a few weeks ago and photographed the protests which make for interesting photos. Many protests in London at the moment so documenting them would make a good assignment.

    • @ForesthillFilmLab
      @ForesthillFilmLab  6 років тому

      Fonejacker it sounds like you just found something to focus on. Think of what you would need to do to tell a story with five images. How could you capture the feeling of these protests in five individual images. Sometimes I approach my projects in this way to really capture images with substance. Before I shoot I even think “will this be one of the five story telling images?” Usually it isn’t and I wait. Although limited time is always a factor just remember it only takes a fraction of a second to make an image ✌🏻

    • @teleaddict23
      @teleaddict23 6 років тому

      ForesthillFilmLab Thank you for the advice. That is exactly what I tried to do, I took more than five photos on slide film and still not seen them myself yet. Obviously everyone else had digital cameras but who’s gonna be looking at their digital files in 50 years? But I figured protests are a great thing to document because they are very of the time politically and something that may be of interest to people in the future. I used to go London to take photos of landmarks but I think photos of people make for a much more interesting photo.

    I have questions about your frankenstax and polaroid 110a conversions, are there other (cheaper) lenses I could use for the frankenstax conversion, and where can I find a 3D print file for the back of the 110a conversion? I have two polaroid 250s, a polaroid 440, an ee100 special, a pathfinder, and the 800 I really want to get these cameras back up and running so I dont just have a bunch of paper weights.

    Yay good to see you back dude 👍 Yeah personal projects are the only thing keeping me interested at the moment. I find it strange though how some images become iconic, who decides this? I think like in art, it's all subjective because some of these so called masters I don't find their work strong or appealing :/

    • @ForesthillFilmLab
      @ForesthillFilmLab  6 років тому +1

      Richard Rollinson - My Analog Life that’s a great question. I don’t know what makes these greats what they are today. I feel like in a time before the internet it was up to photographers to show us another side of things. These days with so many photographers in the world I’m not sure what it would take to stand out from the rest of the pack and have “iconic” images
