I could talk about these films for hours. Listening to you all was so fun. Some things that I always found interesting related to viewing through a female lens; • I know HR Giger got away with a lot but it's still amazing how phallic the xenomorph designs are. As well as the general production design definitely invoking male and female genitalia. • The horror for men is that they can potentially experience for the first time a violation that women fear every day, forced penetration and impregnation. • I love that ultimately the theme of Aliens is good mother vs bad mother and the clash of the two maternal figures. The stuff about Ripley's daughter should never have been cut from the theatrical version as it's vital to this. • Alien 3 is a travesty. Ripley is an object for male gaze and threat, totally passive, ineffective and can only succeed by dying. • Resurrection is over-hated but the Ripley/Queen dynamic is a mess and an inferior rehash of Aliens.
Forgive me for being cheeky but I'm gonna plug our Silver Screen Podcast reviews of this franchise while I'm here. • Alien (feat production designer Roger Christian): ua-cam.com/video/sA625a4SFAk/v-deo.html • Prometheus: ua-cam.com/video/0Oa2P1ExJj0/v-deo.html I'll also link these episodes where SF Queen Nita joins us as our favourite guest reviewer: • Planet of the Apes: ua-cam.com/video/il1-MLPh3rQ/v-deo.html • King Kong: ua-cam.com/video/BdUKGR52fdY/v-deo.html Keep crushing it, ladies!
