Hardware Store Muzzle Loading Pistol Part 1

- I needed a fun project, so I went to my local hardware store and bought some odds and ends. Then, I made them into a muzzle-loading, black powder pistol... Music: Shakey Graves - Buy his amazing music here shakeygraves.bandcamp.com/ and check out his website www.shakeygraves.com One of the most amazing and versatile musicians out there :-) Used by permission of the publisher. Here is a simple drawing of my parts I started with: drive.google.com/file/d/0B08b...

i recently met a few hipsters at a bar who loved shakey graves. It was quite interesting when i explained i learned about him from a video about a man building a gun in the garage. Excellent work btw.

Rewatching to years later. This is what got me into them. Good times
I love this story haha shakey graves is a amazing
I love this build. Reminds me of my youth spent building the things that 12 year olds were restricted in having. Guns, cannons and rockets! Oh my! The local hardware store was my constant source of imagination as well as materials. Now I have a prototype machine shop. I know what I'm doing in my retirement!
Thank you for letting me know that and leaving me an encouraging comment. I suspect we would be friends!
Awesome work, sir. I've been wanting to build one for a long time now. I live in Germany, so this is the only type of pistol, I'm allowed to own, without going through the hassle of getting a license
Thanks for your comment. I am really glad that you like the video. Good luck to you! Cheers, Tim
...when it's way too late and you need to sleep but the video is so very satisfying and calming so you just continue to watch.
Haha - glad to be the pilot of that airplane for you, bluemoondadochi. Sleep well. :-)
A true master craftsman indeed. Can't wait for part 2! Thanks for sharing Tim! Greetings from Germany!
+Maplehouse Knives and Bushcraft Danke mein Freund! Ich hoffe, es geht dir gut :-) You are very welcome
Omg the shakey graves song I love them!!! Awesome build!!
Great work, I like how literally everything on the gun is from hardware parts. Just goes to show how simple firearms are.... And I like your idea of 2 pipes inside each other, which solves any questionable strength issues. Please make more gun videos like this!
+sergeantbigmac Thanks for the kind words. It was fun to make. I am sure that I will mess around with some other gun making in the future. I will post them for sure.
2 pipes inside each other?
That's in ingenious way of carving a barrel channel and well engineering the lock. I hope that coil spring will be strong enough to set off caps!
+mark3smle Thanks, buddy. It worked out good. I have fired off some caps with it and they went "bang". But I had some misfires and will be using a stronger spring.
I love these videos because not only do you make some awesome stuff, but you show off some great techniques that are incredibly useful. Thanks for another awesome video!
+pyrobunny Thanks for the kind words and for taking time to leave a comment. I appreciate it. :-)
Not the first time I've heard this song but last time I heard it I was really into it at like 3am...turns out it was on THIS video and I'm still debating doing a build like this & ended up at your video
I'm so happy I did because not only did you help me nail down the song/artist but you also helped me figure out exactly what action I want to use for me beautiful (almost free) gun to keep in the barn at the summer home...cheap enough that if it breaks/dies then I don't feel bad yet impractical enough that if it goes missing I also don't feel bad since it doesn't use center or rimfire bullets so if some idiot DOES try that, it'll go click without doing anything
Truly your build is amazing to look at
I am so glad to help with both :-) Thanks for your encouragement.
Awesome build and good music... this video was a win win! Well done
Thanks for your kind words. I am glad that you liked it.
Wow, looks really amazing! Can´t wait for part two. :)
+Jebochannel Thanks for taking the time to let me know that.
@@SugarcreekForge Man, it looks amazing, and i would love to copy this project of yours, but the links in the description seem to take to a deleted page...is there any chance you would mind to share the drawings of your parts again?
I think I will use an extension spring like you did next time because it reduces the parts count, and the operation of the spring doesn’t have to count on a sloppily made spring guide. Good idea.
Freaking awesome choice of music, there's a group from NZ with a similar sound. Love the pistol.
Thanks, Justin!
Man gotta say if u just do this as a hobby, then fine job, u might look into gun smithing as a fall back career, that lock work was the best hardware store style ive seen
Thanks for the kind words, Tyler. That is a great compliment. Have a good week!
that's bad ass tim, can't wait for part 2.
+A.J. Rusinek Thanks, A.J. :-)
very cool build, I watched part 1 and 2.
Thanks, buddy. I am glad you liked it.
@Ak Customs:I really like your videos and I would love to see new ones coming, especially for firearms making.

+Amateur Redneck Workshop Thanks :-)

Thank you,you did A Nice I've made A 50 & 45 from kit's I think I'll try your way next.Can't wait for#2
Thanks, Ted
ahh hahaaa i love how you drill bored where the barrel goes instead of hand carving/file it. genius!!!
Thanks so much, buddy :-) It really worked well
Always impressed with your various talents
+McCullen Knives Thanks, Jeremy. You are very kind, buddy. Have a great rest of the weekend.
This ole boy can build I could watch this all day
Thanks for the kind words, Delbert. I appreciate it
Very interesting! I've been wanting a pirate pistol on the cheap. This could really be decorated with carvings and inlays to fill that niche.
I think that could work very nicely as a pirate pistol!
Great video. very inspiring. Anyone ever tell you that you look exactly like Barry Corbin from Northern Exposure. Thanks for putting this up.
Thanks, Craig! I will have to look up Barry Corbin :-)
looking forward to the finish up on this :)
+Joseph Barge Thanks - I am finished with it. I just need to take it out and test fire it.
Thank you very much.
I'm going to make a toy musket(percussion) rifle for my son's cosplay. (My son is going to play a 20th centry Korean empire (1897 ~ 1910) soldier at the cosplay party)
I had found the perfect drawing of trigger-hammer set for toy gun.
Thank you again (sorry, that My english is poor).
You are very welcome. That is very interesting and I understand your English very well. Good luck to you and to your son :-)
Yer English is better than mine.
Better grammar than most.
good video! I love watching people work and not listing to them ramble on about how they made it
Thanks!
Funny thing is that looks like the type of hardware store that still sells guns and ammo
Unfortunately, they do not... but the old hardware store in town (now closed) did. Happy New Year

I know exactly what you mean, Robb :-) Thanks for the sub!
man your a great tinker and and awesome blacksmith good job... liked the vid
Thanks very much, buddy. I appreciate the encouragement. :-)
How thick is the steel for the mechanism and what type did you use? was it mild or something like 1060 or 1095
What a great hardware store. Home Depots are shitty. This one is organized and clean.
True. It is an old school hardware store in my little town
Thanks. It is a nice old school small town store. The people are helpful too.
Absolutely awesome!!!
+2dividedby3 :-) Thanks!
Wish my crappy store had hydraulic tubing and springs.
lol
we meet again
TheFirearmEnthusiast how many springs do they have? mine has about 4
Patrick and TFE, you should shop in Sugarcreek, OH. Little town, big hardware store :-)
SugarcreekForge how much was the entire build?
I enjoyed both videos nice work and thanks for the template
You are very welcome, Eddie
Nice music. Good work !
Thanks, Glaucio GV :-)

+knifenforge Thanks, knifenforge :-)
Bonus points for the Shakey Graves sound track :)
Thanks :-)
The quality of this build is insane... great job on the wooden stock, that jig was a really smart idea!
Thanks for your kind words! It was fun making it.
Love it!... dont forget to make a knife brother for that fine pistol. Stay safe ;-)
+juan manuel marchioli Hi Juan! Good idea :-)
I appreciate the folk music here
Thanks for letting me know.
Nice trigger and hammer build.
Thank you!
Old school! None of that new fangled 3D printer nonsense...
I heard a guy say that his anvil is a 3D printer for steel :-)
thanks for making this video
do you think i could do this but as a flintlock instead, that could be one of your videos perhaps. Also what caliber is that ball
Shakey Graves are great!
:-)
Nicely done!
Thanks, Robert :-)
Careful with those long sleeves and that beltsander!
Yoink
Really? he would have to grind through his hand up to his wrist before it caught the belt
@@owainrichards4372 or just accidentally touch his shirt to the belt while adjusting his stance :|
Not trying to be a prick, just don't wear gloves or long sleeves when working with rotary tools.
Seen too many guys lose shit to ever do that again.
Awesome video from a bad ass dude. You got yourself one more sub. Keep the cool videos coming!
Haha - You are too cool. Thanks man. I subbed you and I am going to bug you to upload more videos. Have a great weekend, buddy.
haha thanks ! You too!
You sir are a genius!
Haha, thank you, Ash. It was fun to make :-)
Nice work man! :)
Thanks!
My dad on his way to Home Depo to get the exact same place as this guy
very Nice Made,well done sir
Thank you!
Very nice video ! I'm looking exactly that ....
Hi Vasily. Thank you for leaving me a comment, my friend. I am glad that you liked the video :-)
This is something i can technically own here in the UK so long as it's modelled off of a pre 18th century firearm.
I probably will never build one but i just thought I'd let other people know that as long as you don't threaten anyone with it the police can't legally take it from you.
Thanks for that comment and for letting UK people know that! Have a great week
Wow, a real hardware store
;-)
Honesty looks like something from the English civil war
Great eye, Paul! I loved the pistols in "A Field In England" a movie set in that time.
I think I'm more impressed by your damn shop dude
Thanks :-)
Bro I am asking how to get the exact measurements
I love Shakey Graves
d(-_-)b
How did you plug the barrel, I've been having minor trouble in some of my more recent BP guns because of the plugs
+Macro Platinum I used a tap and cut threads into the breach part of the barrel. Then I made my breech plug out of a piece of a bolt.
+SugarcreekForge oh ok, thanks
you're awesome man...
+Ian Eva Thanks, buddy :-)
awesome video! now I really want to make on myself. did you get the plans for the trigger assembly online? also I loved the music.
+nickwoo2 Thanks, Nick!
So I kinda have a plan in mind so came here to ask a question rather than watch vid. what would be a good material for the barrel? I got some metal conduit tube but I feel that would be to weak for it.
Since making anything like this is risky... I won't tell you what to do. But, I always use something that is rated for a PSI that is higher than I need. Conduit would be too dangerous for me...
Well done
Looks great, but how did you put a breech plug on the end of that pipe ? That's where the most pressure is when the powder goes boom ! From the look of your jigs, I would say you have done this before. Unlike so many you tubes that fumble around unprepared , showing how to do something. You wasted no time and I appreciate that immensely ! Thanks again ! I am a Gunsmith (retired) and Firearms Safety Instructor, (teaching safe hunting to kids and new bees). Black Powder is one of my specialties !
Спасибо , интересная музыка 1 Thank you for the interesting music !
Спасибо за просмотр и за ваши обнадеживающие слова. I appreciate it :-)
Song? And btw I followed ur every step now I’ve got four of em fully working thnx!
That is so cool Kurisu! Do you have photos posted anywhere on line? I would love to see them.
Great video!
Thanks, buddy!
Phenomenal video my friend, good work - liked :)
+LjGainzTV Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment telling me that.
With a bit more sanding and a bit of varnish, that could be a very nice firearm.
Thanks, John
need building plans for example the hammer and trigger a 1:1
Look through the comments on both videos for a link
Mind furnishing a list of required tools? I'd like to start building up my supply and skills so I can eventually do my own build.
Hmmm... Drill, bits, files, bandsaw, grinder, would be a good start.
Thanks for all. 😀
Looks awsome
Thank you sir :-)
Hell yeah Shakey Graves
d(-_-)b
Thinking about building my own. The price for the kits are insane.!
I loved it . I like how you inleted the barrel very cool will have to remember that ;) subscribed :)
+Waffenschmiedin x Thanks WSX! Much cruder than your beautiful work :-)
thank you hehe I like seeing homemade guns of any kind and I'm actually more impressed with guns made by hand tools its much more challenging. are you going to post a video of you shooting it ?
Lol - Thanks. Yes, for sure. I will shoot it and video that process. I have it done, and it will make a cap go bang... But, I need to put a little stronger spring in it.
cool looking forward to it :)
Laughed at the "door busters" sign
haha :-)
shakeygraves - business lunch
:-)
good video well made 👍
Thanks for the encouragement!
Pipe in different schedules, lengths and inside diameters, springs of multiple sizes and some look tempered. What hardware store do you patronize? All I have around here is Lowes, Home Depot and Ace. They have nothing like that selection.
Hi Harry - I live in a small town with a hardware store that has been around for a long time. They serve a lot of contractors in our area and have a lot of cool stuff. There is actually an even better one in a small town about 5 miles from me. They are disappearing fast with the advent of the large stores you mentioned...
Sorry if this question was already asked. Where did you get your paper template to cut your parts?
No worries, VSO. I have a link to what I drew in the description.
