    I had the pleasure, years ago, of playing in Ms. Moffo’s vocal studio, for her young soprano protégé. The woman was superb in her knowledge of the repertoire, and her interpretative suggestions were extracted precisely from the score. What a great diva and educator, passing down The traditions. Opera is so saturated now with technological contrapments and “reimaginings” of period pieces (such productions actually stretch credulity themselves!), that we forget the simple but potent power of the naked human voice, sung with expressive and technical commitment to the respective composer’s style. Ms. Moffo intimately understood that. So much has been done today to subvert musically and visually traditional approaches to opera. It is is rare to hear a musical performance honoring compositorial tradition in a manner undistracted by opera's other elements. One could lament that fact. Brava, diva.

    Le premier est une splendeur ! Atteignant à la perfection, le meilleur à tous points de vue : vocalement aguerri, musicalement très maîtrisé, et dans l'expression incroyable de cette désolation qui précède l'extase d'une maman qui croit sentir son enfant disparu. On entend une voix très instable dans le second, plus fatiguée, des aigus trop ouverts, moins de nuances dans la douleur et la douceur maternelles...

    Dramma di una madre, vissuto con religiosa accettazione. Il contesto una musica di magica atmosfera poetica. Puccini manifesta sempre una grande capacità di suoni che toccano il cuore e l'anima, il dramma trova la suo epilogo con la morte di lei e l'incontro in cielo con l'amato figlio.

    Man! She really nailed the "Se qui's!" and the "Quando potro morire's?" in the second recording. And that pianissimo at the end was out of this world! The first one was good but I hear more complex emotions in the second one. It feels like it should go to an entire recording of the opera instead of a recital.

    Senza mamma is from 23.12.1957 with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano della RAI. The conductor, Ottavio Ziino, is correct. This was a Martini e Rossi concert
