So I used to go to the same LGS as Crim and I feel like I know his dirty little secret: he's actually the sweetest guy. He was always such a pleasant opponent. He only plays a troll on TV
Seth is absolutely right about Vraska Joins Up. I glanced at my decks and regardless of colors and plans they're all hovering around 50% legendary. It's not a snap add to every single deck kind of card but it is way closer to a two mana Coastal than a two mana Curiosity.

T1: Fetch(no fetch) T2: Bounce T3: Fetch + surveors scope(FetchLandcrack... hold priority .... crack Scope) Super easy profit Plus: 3 Lands enter untapped for you
Richard underestimates how often Legendary Creature triggered abilities trigger, and how easy it can be. ETB abilities come to mind. ALSO, Annie Joins Up removes something upon entering. That is just the icing on the cake.
yeah lost all respect for richard in that moment. All he does is talk down popular cards. I was certain he was going to praise a modal instant speed wrath but he just can't agree with the majority
Thank god the cowboy hats were there! I couldnt tell for the life of me what set they were talking about on the main channel podcast, now its clear we're talking about OTJ!
convenient that "every creature is a legend" when you're poopooing a card, but "the only legend in my deck is my Commander" when it's time to poopoo a different card 🤔
from what i've seen in this podcast, toner and crim seem the most reasonable and objective, while the other 2 seem to just want to bring down other's cards and push up theirs. The amount of dumb shit i have to listen coming from seth and richard...
Vraska Joins up is more relevant for the deathtouch than the curiosity. Deathtouch with pingers, fight effects, trample, first strike breaks the game, cantripping or drawing repeatedly is the upside for that effect. Removing the enchantment doesn’t remove the Deathtouch either, you can even sac it for value after wards and keep the counters. Great in enchantress decks, token decks, tribal decks, helps with delirium, cheap to find and recur. It’s a toolkit card for sure, but a very powerful and unique one with a lot of cool lines of play. It’s not a Toski replacement, it makes Toski much better since suddenly he can’t get blocked for free. The same goes for your wood elves, solemn, esper sentinel, opposition agent, eternal witness, dockside, black market connections tokens. It’s not the meat, it’s the spice. We get cheap engine legends like Honest Rutstein, Sam, Tinybones, Braids, Loran, Inti, Florian, Breena, Lurrus, Valki, Boo, Chevill, Ragavan all the time, and someone will be playing a deck that can’t or won’t block, and then you’re drawing cards with your card draw engines you were playing anyways. There will be more of them every set, and even more every universe beyond. Sure the colours are limiting, and there are bigger splashier draw effects for more mana in those colours, but if you’re playing a low to the ground value deck that attacks with durdly creatures, or has durdly creatures to spare, join up.
Satoru, the Infiltrator can easily be one of those commanders that just draws a decent amount of cards for a couple turns, without seemingly accomplishing that much.. until it becomes nigh-unstoppable because actually they are drawing SO MANY cards. Blink stuff gets out of hand very fast, and Satoru loves that shit.
The problem with it being in why Yuriko is that you don't want to keep drawing all your cards, you want a big heavy oversized thing to stay on the top of your library as much as possible
I appreciate that Richard's entire hour of promise argument relies on it needing two deserts for the upside because there are 2 good deserts, when it needs 3 deserts.
Crim, how are you not thinking of Brenard?? In a creature-heavy build, this can just be making a copy of your best etb golem copy every time you cast a creature spell, or just be making you more 5/5 golems. Brenard is definitely my favorite commander deck, and I think Oltec Matterweaver might be my #1 pick for him from this set.
I agree with crim that satoru is much scarier than people realize. I might even say it’s scarier than yuriko in the right circumstances, although i think the damage that yuriko provides you pushes it a little over new satoru. even if you are just doing ninjas, the cards you play to get your ninjas out like ornithopter will draw you cards and essentially allow you to churn through your entire deck.
How Richard and Crim somehow poop on doubling cards because everything is legendary and poop on cards that synergize with legendaries, I'll never understand.
Satoru Umezawa isn't a ninja commander deck commander either. You CAN run it as your commander, but it seems far more common to run it as a "surprise, Blightsteel!" type wincon.
I've gone from "Richard is a huge troll" to "Richard is bad at magic" for starting off a list of the most powerful cards in a set with a colorless bounce land.
Zen Rising came out and I immediately started adding bouncelands to decks. Not every deck can play them but more can than not. And they got another jump in power with the channel lands and a small one with actual good set of etb lands in the channels.
Uncommon Richard W on bouncelands. Not for the exact reasons he said, but because if you can take turn 4 off to play another 3cmc spell, it essentially generates another land drop in you hand. That’s already playable, but then as said works great with utility lands like MDFC’s, untap effects make them broken, the few catchup ramp cards works well with them, and going to hand size on turn two to discard a reanimation target means that there is also niche uses for them in a variety of decks. Though I only consider Guildless Commons in mono color and colorless decks.
Seth had it right about Oltec Matterweaver. It’s going in my Thalia and the Gitrog Monster human tribal deck for sure. Creates tokens for me to sack, and it is a human itself
Somehow y'all failed to dunk on *bounce lands.* This is such a bad point. A bounce land gives you something in return. Bounce removal doesn't. It's that simple.
Designers are really leaning into the catch-up ramp for white. Both claim jumper and sand scout seem great. Claim jumper even grabs non-basics, and 3/3 vigilance holds equipments pretty well.
I think Richard would be proud, got to use Open The Way in game for the first time last night. Turn 5 ramped put 4 lands, one being field of the dead and got 4 tokens off of it 🔥
My favorite card for EDH this set is Railway Brawler. Whether you're playing it in stompy, +1/+1 counters, or cloning it with a rite of replication it seems like a card you're always going to want to draw as long as you have the mana to cast it
Annie Joins Up is a great and powerful workhorse in my Yuma, Proud (Naya Deserts) deck. Isn’t easy to cast before (and even the same turn sometimes) as my Commander because I need to spend a few turns Ramping, and setting up for Yuma anyway.
Isn't Cut a Deal slightly better than Secret Rendezvous? Never heard it mentioned on the podcast. Also you all talk about Generous Gift/Beast Within but have never heard y'all mention Stroke of Midnight either. Am I missing something? Love you guys so much! Learned so much from you sweeties.
I think I’ve seen cut a deal cast in their games, but part of the value of secret rendezvous is the the political component. Choosing one player who’s behind or to make a friend is more valuable than generically giving everyone a card most times. For stroke of midnight, it has the non land stipulation. There aren’t many removal spells that can hit lands for that mana value at instant speed. They generally favor the flexibility, even if it gives the opponent a better body.
I'm seeing Codfather with trousers rolled up following a water buffalo in a rice paddy. the stand out star of the show though is Crim's bobbing hat, someone's got to make a car ornament of this - I need it.
33:50 Richard come on man you are comparing mana cost when the conversation is about timing plays....ridiculous I can't believe how gentle Crim was to you for such fundamental error
My favorite card (or at least I think the one that will see the most personal play from me) is Lively Dirge. It's a tutor and reanimation spell on one card. It can act as a pseudo Beseech the Mirror by fetching a
Lively Dirge reminds me a lot of Final Parting. Final Parting rarely makes my decks but I think the flexibility of Dirge is enough better to warrant it's inclusion in at least a couple of my decks. I like that Dirge can be a card advantage spell if you reanimate multiple creatures, or bin a Gravecrawler/Reassembling Skeleton type card.
I think the boots fall almost evenly between the other two existing boots in power level. I'd never cut greaves.... But I might put the other two in for consistency.... or one or the other depending on the deck....
Vraska Joins Up feels like a card that was literally designed to pair with Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh from the Assassin's Creed UB set. Like the card is the definition of a perfect fit for that deck
Maybe it's only me, buecause I play with my friend almost every weekend, but this Saturo it's INSANE on Jodah, the unifier... Most of the legendaries too, like Annie Joins Up ... My god ... I don't want to play vs Jodah anymore
Richard saying all the Panharmonicon effects are the same and you can just cut "ones you don't want" when talking about Roaming Throne is kind of bonkers. Roaming Throne is kind of the best card in the deck in decks it's good in, mostly because *it's not a Panharmonicon at all*.
Among other cool aspects, Final Showdown's first mode can really mess with combat math if it isn't advantageous for you to just wrath at the moment. If someone swings in depending on indestructibility, trample, first/double strike, flying and so forth, you shutting all that off before declaring blocks, for only 2 mana, can make that very bad for the person doing the attack. Such an amazing, versatile card.
I think Richard is underestimating the boots - you can just throw it on the construct from saga if you need to, and if you draw it, it is the same as greaves: 2 mana to give any creature of yours haste. No one plays sorcery speed single target removal, if they have removal they can just cast it in response to the greaves equip anyway.
Very important to note that High Noon is not what you are saying... it lets you cast 1 spell PER TURN - not per turn CYCLE. Huge difference. This means you need to be playing at flash speed. Most decks are not, so that is how you get your advantage. You are casting up to 4 spells. I think you definitely need to have heavy removal/counterspell/board wipe package to make it work though.
I agree that Sand Scout is gonna be like a super staple, or at least should be. White catch up ramp that grabs a bounceland is insane. I'm hoping that High Noon being able to sacrifice itself will be enough to convince people that it's not that bad, I'm totally gonna sac it later once this one player has been thoroughly slowed.
Can't believe talked that much about Oltec Matterweaver and didn't mention esper Urza, the most popular commander from Brothers' War. That deck is already loaded up with creatures to support the Commander and Matterweaver becomes "make a Karnstruct every time you cast a creature"
For me Vraska Joins up is over all a good card bt its a bit specific. Its good in decks where the commander wants to attack to get some value and is hard to block and the deathtouch cunter helps it more to be not blocked. I mean if its triggering 2 or more times its absolutly worth the 2 Mana.
Oltec matterweaver has to be a very strong card in the Frodo/Sam Fooddeck. First i would say you cast many low mana cost creatures so you get a bunch of 1/1 gnomes anyway but also if you have food tokens you get a massiv stack of foodtokens. Also the deck plays with a few treasure tokens so ramp is possible, too. So for me nearly a must have in this deck.
It's also great in the new Marchesa deck that cares about crimes if you're running Forsaken Miner combos. There's also enough crossover between Forsaken Miner payoffs and Norin the Wary payoffs that you can run Norin in the deck as well, which is obviously cracked with Satoru.
On final showdown it still is basically dress down, it just requires more careful timing, but I still think that the sheer versatility makes it a worthwhile include.
Nah, much worse than Dress Down. DD can actually answer ETBs by just casting it with the creature on the stack. Can't do that with Showdown and that's a huge difference.
On the bright side, they didn’t mention that Final Showdown blanks most non-phasing protection spells. Opponents can respond with Heroic Intervention if they want, but that would resolve first and then the abilities would get stripped off by Showdown.
CRIM! PLAY THE MATTER WEAVER IN BERNARD!! It's so unbelievably good in there. Especially if you sack it and then get a golem token of it. Cuz it's an artifact creature and can copy itself
Annie joins up screams Agatha of the Vile Cauldron, there's a cpl uses, but it'll just sit in your hand staring at you or doing nothing on the field 95% of the time.
I once turned wheel of misfortune into a 3 mana 60 damage spell. While piloting a Veyran deck I had ran out of cards in hand. If I was able to draw seven I likely would have won that turn, so everyone agreed to take 20 damage (my life total at the time) to prevent me from filling my hand. I took two of them out the next turn but got taken out by the last guy standing (couldn’t get around Propaganda before he killed me).
🤩 I like Oltec Matterweaver… I see possibilities… But also, it is very cool to get an Ixalan (love Ixalan) themed card again that is also a great card.
Looking forward to seeing y'all bust out the Fur suits for Bloomburrow

For Oltec Matterweaver, if you're in an Artifacts strategy, creating untapped Powerstone tokens seems pretty generically good.

On the bright side, they didn’t mention that Final Showdown blanks most non-phasing protection spells. Opponents can respond with Heroic Intervention if they want, but that would resolve first and then the abilities would get stripped off by Showdown.
Claim Jumper is great and an automatic white Commander staple.
CRIM! PLAY THE MATTER WEAVER IN BERNARD!! It's so unbelievably good in there. Especially if you sack it and then get a golem token of it. Cuz it's an artifact creature and can copy itself
Someone tell Richard the kind of hat he is wearing cause I don't have the heart too
My bets for the worst predictions of 2024: Richard's takes from the join ups onwards!
There are two decks that I see Oltec Matterweaver popping off in: Osgir and precon Urza
Annie joins up screams Agatha of the Vile Cauldron, there's a cpl uses, but it'll just sit in your hand staring at you or doing nothing on the field 95% of the time.
Richard has never had his bounce land strip mined and it shows, lol
Need Vince to teach him a lesson or three :P
Matterweaver is gonna be nuts in Brenard.
Yes! Hats!!
🤩 I like Oltec Matterweaver… I see possibilities… But also, it is very cool to get an Ixalan (love Ixalan) themed card again that is also a great card.
The best thing to come out of Thunder junction was Seth's cowboy hat!
Final showdown is a house in Odric lunarch marshal. Go to combat, give all your creatures indestructible and then wrath
