Cardfight!! Vanguard: Manners in Japan
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 сер 2024
- The first video in which I compare the differences between how Vanguard is enjoyed in Japan versus the West! In this video, I chose to focus on manners - some of these are only really apply to the Japanese way of going about life as a whole, while some of them I think would be very effective if used worldwide.
As a disclaimer, all of these points are ones that I make based on my experience of playing Vanguard for 6 months in Japan. They may not be super accurate on a broad scale, but this is the experience that I was a part of every single week.
If you enjoyed this sort of video, please do let me know in the comments! I would like to do more of these, but I would like to know whether I should heavily prioritize uploading these kinds of videos or not, so please do let me know yours thoughts!

DifferentFight really love this video! Hope to see more.
Thank you for the info. I like the video. Sometimes people in community (especially outside Japan) forget the manner while playing TCG not just VG. It is good to keep in mind of the opponent player as well so this way the game is fun to play.
Please make another video regarding how Japan plays Vanguard :)
i'd absolutely love to see more
Is that a cardfight hoodie?
Diffrider Apostle: Stand up! Z Vanguard.
Me: Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu!

Its interesting to see how different it is between the west and Japan. I've been to Japan before and I've seen these poilite manners and I'm so thankful for these.
It is right! And this is honestly one of the smaller differences too, but still one that I thought was worth talking about for starters haha
I'm glad that most those manners are followed here in Argentina (at least my comunnity) without even copying the japanese, even the paper thing to track down who won and who lost. Just using common sense and good manners.
Wow, truly enlightening. Will practice these habits whenever I have the chance to join shop tournaments in Malaysia. Thanks Kris, excited to see your next video!
Thank you very much!
Please more of these videos. It's super informative and other countries could learn more about this. I really like the aspect of explaining the skill as you play along so the opponent knows what you are doing.
yes please, more of these. understanding differences in culture will make other cultures better. it's good to know so that we can learn from it.
Thank you for the response! :D
I like the idea of briefly explaining skills(not word for word ofc, but shortened) as they activate, since that's something I kind of picked up from the anime. When I saw recorded matches of tournaments where both players barely talked, I was pretty surprised. The mood feels a lot more serious, and that just wasn't the kind of thing I liked. As for rock paper scissor, I end up normally doing that before we even draw 5, since that's just how most games I've played are. You determine who goes first before you start the game.

These type of videos (English speaking, foreign locations) are really interesting. It gives insights on other cultures to the West. While I can watch Japanese gameplay I can only understand the cards and not the people. So thank you for talking about human interactions.
That's definitely true! Fun fact actually - I started studying Japanese mainly because I wanted to understand what was going on in the Japanese CFV side LOL
Yes this would be good to know.
I Love hearing these curiosities on Japan. Keep it up DF. All the best! Thank you!
Playing Vanguard in Japan sounds like heaven. It really annoys me when people do things, but don't explain what thier doing. People could argue and say "Oh, you should know what this does..." Sorry, but I can't remember every single card in every clan. Like you said, just do what you need to do, but explain what it is that you're doing just so your opponent knows exactly what's going on and there's no confusion :P
Agreed.

Agreed
at my first vanguard tournament two weeks ago this girl said "don't worry I'll be nice" and proceeded to just summon an entire field full of tokens every turn and pull out a bunch of dice marking a bunch of power boosts and not explaining literally anything, only words out of her mouth each turn were "X000 on van." I'm not going back to that shop, people like that are what drive new players away.
@@qwetroop man, that sounda awful
I am really liking this video. It helps a lot for any of us that want to go to Japan. Please make more. I can't wait for more of these videos.
Thank you for the support!
Anytime man :)
When I play card games, I love communicating and play at a relaxed pace. Other people are so silent and afraid, zipping through a turn. I don't understand that. I think every time I play a game with people at my store, every turn I have to ask _"... Are you done with your turn?"_ But every time I end my turn, I say _"And that ends my turn."_
I’m super interested in more of these videos! I’ve been interested in the differences between the two player bases since I first heard that it was a different environment!
I would like to see more of these kind of videos to be honest, it gives me satisfaction to see people respecting and enjoying themselves with vanguard. Over here it doesn't really feel that way. Everything is so fast and I don't feel like they enjoying it as much as I do when I play.
That hoodie looks crisp af, great vid as always!
Thank you :D
I really like the premise of these videos. Would like to see more.
Also I tend to always say names and explain skills as I do them. It makes it easy for me to keep track of what I'm doing also so I don't make mistakes.
same here
Good to know :D will have to watch the video again when I'm going to Japan in September :D and please keep those coming :D
Welp as I said in PM, this series of videos is most certainly interesting. First because we learn about how Japan's manners operate in something very specific as a card game, second because it allows people to do some hindsight. I'd love to see more of this, and again, what I would like to see as a next episode is how they think the game, since the West has delayed releases for upcoming sets ; they don't have a "time to sit" and analyze what's going on. Which might, in turn, explain the Western commercial state, since we know through reports what is played and how, players determine how much they need a card and how much of a card they need which might partly explains why a card's price is overall higher here than it is in Japan.
I'd definitely be interested in more videos like this. It's always fun to hear how games are played in different parts of the world ^^
Hell yeah o wanna know as much about japanese vanguard as you can share!!! 💯
I really think we should adopt a lot of these things over here in the West. For sure being polite about every aspect of the game really makes playing much more enjoyable
Can confirm :')
Top 10 western anime betrayals
This was fascinating, please do more!
Love the vid and would definitely love to see more of these; keep up the great work!
I'd be pleased for more of these. Thanks ! :D
Just found this. Very interesting! Also, I thought you lived in Japan this whole time XD didn't know you where from Europe!
Nah I was only in Japan for studies haha
Yasss queen
Duh respeccccccccc
He attac he also protec
*DUH RESPECCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKUTO*
Too bad that that asshole doesn't have respect towards anyone. If he had he hadn't done that disrespectful thing that he did.
I mean... that was the point I was making though? :P Sarcasm...
Really interesting video :) I'm Italian and I always explain my skills during a game, I think is more interactive and useful for learn something about the opponent's deck. Keep going, japanese culture is always appreciate.
That was really informative, if there’s more I’d be glad to see more about it
Well I have been enlightened. Much thanks D-fight sensei
Great vid!! Really enjoyed it and it was amazing to see how most of the manners you stated are actually practiced at my locals. Very happy to watch this vid and would love to see more vids regarding manners :)
The next one would be more about the community market in Japan, but I'm happy to hear that these are practiced around you! :D
Yes i feel that videos like this shorten the gap and confusion of western and japanese players.
100% interested in this type of content
Next Video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good job. really looking forward for next one
Please do more of this content is really good
Great vid! Would like to see more of this
This really helps, thanks. I realized how much of a dick I can be in shop tournaments after watching this video (texting, talking to friends, playing fast, etc).
In the end learning is the best way to improve, so you've taken the first big step haha
Thank you for the support!
I am not Japanese but this exactly how me and my friends play
Thank u so much for the video... was good information for playing vanguard in Japan. As well as just overall game mechanics..... I agree I’d like to see some things change in western vanguard etc....
I'd like to hear about the differences between Western and Eastern VG players :) Great content!!
i really waiting for your next video, i think it is gonna be a very good topic.
Yes, more accounts of your firsthand experience with the Japanese take on the game and the franchise would be appreciated!
japan is all about that respect
I always knew about the difference in Japanese culture and western but never knew about the difference between card games. Never knew they were that specific in there stuff. kinda wish we were like that, western culture is rude in comparison from my point of view. Please continue this series! Much love.
Singapore players could really use some of those mannerisms. It's terrible here since most of the players are too hasty and salty even before the games started.
Zarku AY YOU SINGAPORE PLAYER?
I know that feel
Lmao when they read ur cards and snaps it on the table when their done horrible
Hahaha especially at Rowell
Welcome back DF. Love to see more about the Japanaese community.wanna see what makes them so much better then the west .I'm hopeing it s not just the genes XD
I don't really think there's any region or nation that's better than the other, as each one has their own most talented players :')
Was super interesting to watch
I am interested, thanks for making this video ;)
For some reason at Regionals, people explain skills more than anywhere else. I do it as if someone has never played the deck before. Explaining CB, SB, all of that, calling out skills and going at a pace that they can keep up with. More or less.
I would realy like having the Japanese way of vanguard
It's really fun! When you enter tourneys Japanese people are just so polite and they explain everything when needed and some of them are just so quirky that it makes the game even more fun!
It was interesting to hear properly (in my fair opinion) how the manners work since i have followed some japanese vanguard channels and those being: syeeki and CardKingdom (カードキングダム) since i have watched their videos and i all ways saw they were doing these things that you mentioned
i would love to see more of the difference between the west and the east
as for hear in Finland we have some times (depending on who/where) we usually do the cutting first and then decide who goes first by either doing Rock, Paper, Scissors or you throw a dice then we just do the usual of draw/mulligan and then proceed to just say the whole "Stand up, Vanguard!"
also with the whole explaining the skill we do it most of the time but our explanation usually are really in the whole *basic* way as possible
I would want to apologies for this massive wall of text but to put it simply we in Finland are playing properly but not as properly as there in Japan
That's awesome to hear! I actually haven't ever visited any Scandinavian countries, but I'd love to experience Finnish Vanguard as well!
REALLY AGREE WITH YOUR THIRD POINT! (it's unfortunate not many do it)
.....and thanks for the phone advice (really helpful), i once anger my opponent when i want to use my phone app (Power calculation app) in the middle of match and now know the reason (my friends not minding it when i played against them)
as someone, that doesnt actually know all the skills, I'd love for locals to be more like that. Like everyone does shit and I am like: what the heck just happened
I think even in those cases you should be able to just ask to confirm effects :x
Gonna learn these when I go to Japan. I also find even in their society, manners are also quite valued. They took pride in what they do. Really like those folks!
Btw I'm still waiting for that vanguard rap XD. #SexybeardVsSexyvoice
It'll happen eventually :')
DifferentFight haha I look forward to it
i would like to see another video on the difference of west and east vanguard
I actually prefer this manner of starting a game. Some builds in some decks have different starting hands depending on if they're going first or second. Not all decks just go "hurr durr need main g3 and a random g1 and g2 in hand" some builds actually have different g3s in their deck that they want to have as their starting g3 if they're going first because of various reasons(like they have skills that work on place or skills that don't have gb1 requirements which helps them draw more, rush early or etc.) then later on switch it to their g3 that they will stick with till the end of the game.
I totally dig seeing differences because Japan and the West. I'm sure there's some culture things that are different, and i like what i saw in this video. I actually did the explaining thing without knowing Japan did that.
There are a few things I would love to see stick in the West, like the Mulligan and choosing who goes first parts.
One thing I am interested in is whether or not Japanese players actually use dice. I watch a few japanese games on UA-cam and they dont always use dice. Is that a mostly Western thing? Looking forward to the next one!
I actually noticed most players don't use dice! You always RPS for who goes first, and people usually track power manually. Some people use them for power counters, but not that many.
DifferentFight Very interesting, man. Appreciate this video and I encourage this series. I'm sure you just scratched the surface with this one.
Yea I'm strongly agree with that, the manners n stuff
At my country, players will assume their opponents know the units skill especially when we r not all know to read japan skill texts
And such case does happens, some on hits skills are not mentioned until we let the attack goes thru, its kinda unfair for player who dont study much about other clans
Nice Video
I always decide who goes first before I draw. We do it "the japan way" someone said today, but yeah. shuffle and cut, draw 5 on the table, roll, then mulligan. I hate when I roll dice then people draw their hand and start to mull it's like NOPE, JUDGE
here in sweden we look at our hands but we wont let either player chose who goes first but rather let the player with the highest dice roll start whenever he wants to or not. its faster for us and we have only 40 min for best of 3 so we cant afford to play to slowly
paced out works fine in best of 1, in best of 3 in a chaos mirror good luck with that XD
Great vid!! As someone who has thought about taking a trip to Japan to experience vanguard on the other side of the world....How big is the gap for someone who only speaks english and only has english decks?
Mmmm you won't really be able to participate in tournaments and you'll need to look for people that aren't looking too busy. It'd be best to learn some very basic Japanese (I could do a crash course on Japanese card game lingo) just to make things a bit easier haha
yes I wan to know the market over there
Strange, I just checked the comprehensive rules, and it says to decide who goes first before drawing the first five and then re drawing.
It does actually, I noticed while playing the 3DS games LOL
But I guess as long as it's done before you check your first 5 cards it works out alright
How do you explain a card's skill to the locals there? Were you speaking in Japanese? No offense, but the last time I went to Japan, not many Japanese can actually speak english. Just curious, nice vid btw.
I just speak Japanese haha, worst case scenario you can just let them read it
great video
What are the consequences if you didn't follow then rules in Japan for Vanguard especially for the manners.
BTW very interested video
Usually you'll be told what you should be doing and forgiven, since they're very nice usually to foreign players, but it's important to learn from your mistakes :')
I wish more people would do the skill explaining in Canada. But something that is interesting is that around here, during shuffling and mulliganing, it's common to make nice comments about the various sleeves or mats or deck boxes that people bring.
In Japan some people will make remarks on that too, but it depends on the person haha
here it's more of a "hey i'm tryn'a be friendly here. lets be chill, ok?" kind of gesture
since in Toronto, we have... a lot of salt sometimes
I am interested
Love it.
Difference prices between japanese player and japanese shop. Is it different and if it is, is the gap really that big? Cause my friend said player price there are way cheaper than shop price
There's actually no such thing as player price in Japan, I'll explain it more in the next Japan-related video :')
Do more now please! Also where do you go to school
I study in the University of Luxembourg, but while I was in Japan I was doing an exchange in Waseda University!
the "dont look at your cards before deciding who goes first" thing irks me a lot too. hopefully people will start doing that.
In casuals I don't mind it, but it's in tournaments that it can get on my nerves haha
Well it is in the rules that you need to decide who goes first before mulligan anyway. I too am slowly trying to remind people in my community they need to do this. When they ask me why, I reply card choices can be different if you go first.
The England community seems to have regarded it but not enforced due to the lack of social openness the British have. ( No idea for the Welsh, Scots seem to be great )
Hi, I use a Vanguard Power Counter on my phone to help me keep track of my power ups with Anafiel and Mel'ejal. Should I ask my opponent if I can use it before I use it?
Definitely! In tournaments you're only allowed to use dice and physical customised counters, so in terms of phones it's better to ask.
DifferentFight Aaaah, okay :) though I have never participated BCS or any Bushiroad tournaments, it's great to know how to act should I am given the opportunity to go to such events. Thanks and keep up the good work Kuya! :D
I am going to tokyo in march and was wondering are there any specific card shops that players would be down for a match?
Try Shakashaka Toreka, I did a video on them! (Link in description)
I've been playing a long time in China, I see alot of similarities and what you mean what the western side is doing different :D
Nice video :D
Would love to hear more about Chinese Vanguard! I actually have no exposure to it, so I'm very curious haha
What I see from my region is almost as same what happens in Japan. Almost same behaviour. We also exchange some words/know each other before the game starts. We decide who goes first after both cuts the othersides deck, then we draw and decide whether we keep or announce how much we mulligan. In China japanese cards are used, thanks to some similarities from Kanji and chinese characters people can read some parts of the effects and that usually is enough to understand the skill. In every tournament there is also a judge who can read and speak japanese . I like the term you used with paced play, we also say the Name of what we stride/ride/call and we announce when we use skills but we don't explain the skill unless it's being asked. After the game both players say thank you, fills the sheet and give it to the judge and try to recap the game a little. If enough time, a fun game usually is played
R e s p e c c
I would personally love to have slower-paced games, but sadly rounds in my locals are far too short . . .
Love it! Definitely didn't follow some of these rules when I was there ooops!
Oh whaaaaaaaaaaaat??? now i want to play in japan :'(((( one of the reasons I got turned off when trying out playing in locals or with veteran Vanguard players is that they play too quickly and I always loose track on what is happening :
what do you think with the new nubatama g bt14 support? good? will it be meta?
Looks to be fairly DOMINANT :')
Tbh! Explaining the skills are very useful because sometimes your opponent does not know if what can be the outcomes if he is she choose cards from own card skill! Because sometimes people choose to retire the Resist cards and sometimes the owner of that unit that has resist become a douche and say "are you a beginner "? I am like bruh! that is your responsibility to explain the effect of YOUR Fucking card! , he isnt playing it .
you may have thought about it but can you do a video with the playstyle differences?
I'll be doing that down the line, but that one's gonna require a bit more preparation so I wouldn't put it out just yet haha
is there any way for you to make a video and explain how each clan is not as bad as a lot of people think it is. i keep trying to explain to my friends that a few of the clans i do main is not as bad as what others do. but i kinda get tried of trying to defend the decks i have fun playing. if by any chance you could do a video of each clan or all clans at once ( would be a lot of information and a long video) but it would be really helpful to just to refer them to your video(s) and have them listen to a voice of reason. for i know we all have a deck that we all hate to Vs..
I might do that at some point, but for now I have a lot of other priorities to take care of first haha
Can you please do the camunity would be awsome :)
What product do you use for your hair?
Whatever's cheap LMAO
Always play with Respecc
Over all I feel that we western players need to learn from Japanese players as that would improve everyone's enjoyment.
* Sees Daddy Kris *
Nah Solemn ain't got shit on Dad. Jules on the other hand
Notificaton SKWAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDD
>telling the opponent about my cards skills
HAH
No. I'd rather not. It makes it easier for my opponent to screw up when he doesn't know.
