Mike definitely helped me out of a jam with this one and at the same time provided some wisdom. Will definitely be reading that book once it arrives. Thanks Mike 🙏🏻
Dan used to do live shows his wife a daughter used to sell his books in the lobby great guy and a talented teacher funny he kept us knuckleheads entertained while teaching very valuable stuff i must have saw him at least five times.
The homeowner was super cool about it.. What a sport for laughing and stuff with you. I would have been beyond pissed, not wanting to talk to anyone and crying in the car. lol Great job Mikey - guaranteed you're going to save several homeowners and some smart plumbers from going through the same thing just from this video.
I appreciate the videos! I really enjoy positive content consisting of people actually fixing things rather than complaining about how things are falling apart!
You come downstairs to do your laundry, you can check the gg and add water yourself. If the phone rings don't answer it while your adding water to the boiler.
Finally someone who understands my pain. I have been in my house for 18 years and the first year that I moved in, i had the same problem. I had to replace the automatic feeder which I did and it stopped working. However now I am stuck with having to feed it water in the middle of the night whenever the temperature drops to the single digits. It's nerve-wracking because I work the third shift, and when the temperature drops to the single digits sometimes I have to miss work and stay home for fear that the boiler will stop working because that's what it does. I actually had to post pone winter vacations for fear that something will happen with the boiler while I am traveling. However it is a Utica, and that boiler has been in this house since 1960 something. At 68 degrees in my house even when it drops to the single digits, it feels like a sauna. It works phenomenal!😮
Yes, I have a call to a plumber so that he can do a pre-winter maintenance and see what is going on. Once the weather gets below 10 degrees, or minus zero, I have to add water to it. I am glad you mentioned it. @@PipeDoctor
Just finished rebuilding a 5 section weil mclain. They didnt maintain it and just drove it into the ground. It did have an hydrolevel autofill and I explained what could happen but they wanted it on. I will say that one thing with the hydrolevel is it gives you a digital count of the gallons that went through. So that is helpful to know if you have a leak or bad vent but otherwise you are correct, you could have a disaster happen if you werent home to catch it.
I am 100% agree with you ,my plumber gave me a suggestion to put auto feeder fo both boilers i said it take couple of minutes to cķ and clean the water I do twice a wèek drain until the clear wayer comes thank God i made right discion
I like having a few buckets on my truck and if the relief valve is leaking I use a shop vac hose and run it into a bucket. Mike these are the best videos, you explain everything so well. Thanks!
Hi, the water would of first started pouring out of the main vents in the basement correct? And if that didn’t tip you off then the first floor air vents would be the next clue. I am staring to think about shutting off my water supply to my auto feeder in my big 6 section new steam boiler esp before I renovate the basement
My boiler is over 25 years old now and I never had a problem with my automatic water feeder but i think either I should replace it or bypass it and feed it manually from now on
I have one of these cut offs and it failed last summer and flooded basement. But you’re saying once a month Im forced to check if the low water cut off works? But to avoid the filling position fail i experienced wouldn’t I be checking to see if the boiler is actually too full? Why do I need to know if cut off is working in this situation?
Don’t have many steam boilers here in Ontario anymore. Good information in this video Mike about the automatic fill valve. The old hvac guy in Toronto. 👍🇨🇦
Great video mikey P! I always thought (in theory) that those water feeders would fail in the CLOSED position to avoid this exact scenario but damn I've never seen one stay stuck open like that. Good find brotha!👍🏾 & aye tell the customer to grab a surfboard next time if this happens again! 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂🌊 #surfsup
That monthly maintenance plan brings some great value with it……works out to less than 76 cents per day! Less than a cup of coffee a day…….just saying!✋😎🤚
Yep he's a Guru.... Dan Houlihan oh yeah I was gonna say 10 to 15 buckets lol ... I like your maintenance Plan .... Where you wave the trip charge .and discount the labor and parts charges a little .. Boy did I blow it for the last 23 years 😞But ... I did a lot of good shit .over the years , have a great reputation .. and would consider myself a pretty top notch Residential Gas heating tech . ... I really never blow my horn ... but I guess I just did ... lol. . Great video brother
Mike do you ever get calls like this where the gauge glass is just plugged up? I had two in a row today. People get this misunderstanding from old timers that you don’t need to maintain gas/steam heating systems. Only if they knew
Mike I could have won this one for the bucket contest, but I really don't want anything from you except you're a great content. Thank you Saint Mike When are you coming down to Miller's to put in a new boiler for me for five grand or 6 grand? 😰
There's also a 3-hour video called Dead men's steam School seminar and it talks about the history of steam boilers and everything that was very interesting maybe get your client to watch that instead of buying the book. It is on UA-cam.
..... I feel like it's kind of an IQ test.......Why risk it if it isn't necessary........Only takes a tiny piece of crud to fail open and overfill.......Not a big deal if a boiler shuts off on LWCO.......If the water hammer doesnt get your attention, a cold house will........
Mike definitely helped me out of a jam with this one and at the same time provided some wisdom. Will definitely be reading that book once it arrives. Thanks Mike 🙏🏻
Develop and strengthen relationships is the best advice
this plumbers son got from this .
Outstanding service call from a Nassau county plumber!
I''m with you man... I ran into this during a home inspection the other day.... Valve never turned-off... "There is no free ride on this planet" :)

Mikey, I like to stay anonymous online but your videos really teach a lot to those that are listening. Keep it up man.

You need to address why you are adding water in the middle of the night

I also recommend Dan Hollahan’s steam book! Also the boiler’s Hartford loop looks wrong, but what do you think?
Looks like it has a short nipple and maybe 2” under sight glass. What else?
When there is water on the floor Mikey pipes smells money
Don’t have many steam boilers here in Ontario anymore. Good information in this video Mike about the automatic fill valve. The old hvac guy in Toronto. 👍🇨🇦
My first hvac book when I was an apprentice was the lost art of steam heat by the same author
Everyone with a steam system should read that book or hire a service company to do so. The savings alone are worth it.
Another Problem Solved By Mikey Pipes Thanks For Teaching Your Knowledge Blessings Always Bro.
Exceptional service as usual.
Great video mikey P!

I worked on a couple steam boilers today

I was dying when u said the boilers like your wife , ur fucking hilarious
Hey Mike Why not get a transfer pump?

Where did u get the large diameter hose going into the pump
Smashed the like button, St. Mike!
Good job Mike.
MP - You don't have a transfer pump??? WTH? Harbour Freight here I come!
Correction on the water boiling temperature. Distilled Sterile pure water doesn’t boil at 212°. But a contaminated water will boil.
Awesome as usual...
Mike do you ever get calls like this where the gauge glass is just plugged up? I had two in a row today. People get this misunderstanding from old timers that you don’t need to maintain gas/steam heating systems. Only if they knew
If they know that they needed a professional to maintain the unit is what I meant to say.
You need to invent a high water cut off,
Mike I could have won this one for the bucket contest, but I really don't want anything from you except you're a great content.
Thank you Saint Mike
When are you coming down to Miller's to put in a new boiler for me for five grand or 6 grand?

I'll email you bro
the water feeder should be installed horizontally..

Too late. Ordered the book already.
Book is better, unless Ur Thorton Melon that is.
It is safe to say "She's a leaker!"
I had 6 full trash cans worth in an apartment building 😂
God I’m glad I live in Fla
I just call lWCO steam toilets. Replace the flush valve every few years, work like new.
Hi Mike 👋
7 buckets
