  • A look back again at the Gulf Oil Branch Line, this time talking to some of the guys that built it back in 1967 and looking at how such a small team completed the line in only 10 months despite the weather and objecting landowners.

This is great, just moved away from Pembrokeshire and somehow I only just discovered this line a few weeks ago. Nice to know it's history.

Fabulous, really appreciate your work on bringing this history to life. Great to hear from the people involved too. Very poignant, sad to see it unused and overgrown, but it's still there, sleeping it seems.

Thanks Ben it great hear you liked the tribute to my father in law’s work. We took the video back to Wales last week and showed it to the guys who worked on the line and they loved it. I hope it’s sleeping and someone will get it back working again.

Thank you John, to you and those shown in the credits, for a wonderful story / history of this site and railway.
It brings a lot of memories to me as well, on different jobsites here in Canada ( Newfoundland & Labrador i.e. island portion of this province ) where I worked as an equipment ( plant ) supplier.
I feel I have a distant but similar kinship ( I think ) with all those fellows you have shown.
    Thank you!

Reg, always good to hear such appreciative comments and I will pass them on to Richard who is really the driving force behind these videos. I guess you can relate to a time when there was less red tape and maybe not a good thing but less health and safety rules. Things were done quicker. The jury is out as which method is best. Do you watch the Priestly Demolition Channel from Ontario?

@@johnbolton7894 Yes, I chuckled when I heard one of those men reply , when asked about "Health & Safety",.... he said ( surprised ) " there was none" ( something like that ) :)
I can imagine that work proceeded quickly, but some might say this was under some unspoken ' protest' back then. But then it did cost a bit too, such as Dick Hampton not having cabs installed on the machinery. I almost laughed and frowned at that, then I thought of those men having to work in heat and cold.
No I have not seen that channel, but I will look it up.
Thanks, and Good Health to all!

This line did in fact run again for a few months. The aggregates for the construction of the LNG tanks were brought in by rail. Some forward thinking by the contractor.

    from Fraser, husband of Leslie
As I recall, there were three oil refineries around Milford Haven, - Herbranston, Robeston, and of course, Waterston (the Gulf branch). The OS map shows them all still there !!

Hi Fraser, glad you liked the video. Gulf oil have definitely gone, according to Wikipedia they merged with Standard Oil of California (SOCAL) in 1985 and then both rebranded as Chevron. The refinery closed down in December 1997, and the owners left the oil business in the UK. Today, the site is occupied by the SemLogistics oil depot and the Dragon LNG terminal. Have you had a chance to look at part two where we talk to the guys who built the line?

Absolutely, it was a simpler time, maybe there is a better balance between health and safety and risk.

@@richardcowley4737 From making the video I learnt that in 1967 people looked at things in a different way, the video really highlights the differences which is the running theme. I can't imagine a time now when a bridge , for example, could be designed built and installed in a month. You are right though it seems that nowadays some people are just looking for ways to be up in arms. Hope you will watch and enjoy our new video about the flood plain at Cowley Bridge Junction near Exeter coming soon.
