  • The Bristol to Exeter line was built Between 1841 and 1844 and crossed a low area of land near Exeter.
This area is where the rivers Creedy and Exe meet at Cowley Bridge and was always notorious for flooding in winter.
This programme will discuss the changes that have been made to the rivers at Cowley, and the measures put in place since the disastrous Exeter City floods of December 1960 and subsequent flood events.
Richard Watts, was the BR Western Region Resident Engineer on site during work carried out in the mid-1960s to reduce the effect of the seasonal rise in water levels. Although this project was essentially a bridge replacement scheme the river’s course was the key driver to the direction of this project.

A fascinating film. So much of interest in a small area. Some lovely stills of the St Thomas floods including many buildings that were lost in the city’s resulting flood defence works.

Thank you for you kind comments, I am glad you liked our vid. Richard spent his life working for the railways and has a wealth of knowledge on these kind of projects. Hope you have checked out the Gulf oil line videos as well.

Very interesting, much improved my understanding of the railway flooding in the area that I have crossed so many times, thank you! 😊

Thank you Tom, all down the Genius of Richard who kept all the info from 1965 and can still remember most of it.

    Superb work John.
You can almost see my house in the view over the valley from the hillside!
I watched the work happening with great interest at the time and there were details in your film that I hadn’t been sure about until now.
Thanks very much for explaining it so well and I enjoyed the nostalgic parts too.
    Nick

Hi Nick, Glad you like our little production it was fun to make with the only exception of the bull and cows who menaced us when taking the wide shots over the valley.

Hi Colin I spoke to Richard and here is his reply
The bridge is somewhere between Exeter & Crediton. Its collapse is referred to in Mid Devon District Council’s historic records of flooding, page 1. The collapse was not at Cowley, and the only two locations where the River Creedy passed under the Southern Railway between Cowley Junction and Crediton are about 0.6km below Dunscombe, and next to Downes Crediton Golf Course 0.7km east of Crediton Station. Having retired 25 years ago, I no longer have access to the railway Bridge Registers so am unable to pinpoint exactly which bridge it was.
    Richard.
    All the best John

Thank you Richard but the real power behind the production is the amazing Mr Watts

This splendid film I have just watched for the second time but have still not fully grasped the complexities, which is no fault of the writer and presenter.
Which bridge was it that collapsed on 30th September, 1960?

An excellent and comprehensive account of the complicated history of the rivers and railways at Cowley Bridge.
