I don't know if you are aware of it yet so maybe I can help out. I've put up big 4 man tents that you can stand up in by myself in the wind and rain and it's very easy to do. This is just as easy. Thread your poles through then peg all the corners out. 2 at the back and 4 at the front. Make sure the door is zipped up.
Now, leave the tent pegged out and put the middle pole up first. The tension of the pegged out tent keeps it upright, it wont blow down and you don't have to guy it just yet either. Next do the back pole and then the front. Because the corners are already pegged the tent will stand by itself so go around and guy out. Once you've guyed out you can go onto pegging the rest of the tent down.
Everyone always starts with just the back pegged out and then the back pole first and it makes it much more difficult that way. Especially in the wind. Honestly give my way a try.

Ur never going to warm up until u get a good sleep mat ,I'm like u I like a wide bag so I use Big Agnus long wide lost dog and their Rapid SL mat in wide long, they also have a similar down version, I love that the bag attaches to the pad so u never feel like ur falling off and no cold spots. Good luck finding what's right for u 👍

Since I use the Outwell Dreamcatcher single 7.5cm, I'm sleeping very well, my wife has a Outwell Dreamhaven. No more cold from the ground :-) Cool video!

Sounds like a really good set up. Ive been looking at the Quechua 10cm pads they sell. A new sleep system is definitely something I need to improve on before those chilly winter nights. Thank you for the information

    Hi Paul!
Just saw your message saying you fell ill after this camping night. I wish you a full and quick recovery.
Definitely the sleep system is paramount. Last year I also had a very bad night in the alps because my sleeing bag was not rated for the cold weather I encountered in summer (yes, it almost froze that night).
So I looked for a sleeping bag that was rated for below 0ºC temperatures, but at the same time, that I could use it in summer time without roasting inside. This is the Outwell Contour Lux, which has different fill densities on the two sides. I cannot recommend it yet, because I haven't had the chance to test it in the cold, and also because it is synthetic and not down, as you have expressed specifically that you want a down sleeping bag. And I agree with you that it is the best thing.
What I can recommend however, are the inflatable beds by Decathlon. True, it isn't a light mat as you use, but they raise you so high above the ground that all that air in between ads to the insulation under your body (which the sleeping bag isn't of any use because all the fill is compressed by your own weight).
    Get well!

If you're mainly car camping i'd definitely look at fishing/carping beds/sleeping bags. Generally they're built for a bigger frame, I've used them myself instead of sleeping bags.

Snowbird 7 has a comfort rating of +7. If you are mostly car camping, why not consider a heavy synthetic bag with a winter rating? Using a sleepingbag liner will also make you warmer. The uninsulated sleeping pad will suck the heat out of you, no matter how good your bag is. And have the reflecting side of the mat against your body, but maybe under the sleeping pad. Just try holding your hand on the reflecting side of your mat and feel the heat radiate back to you. It won't reflect the cold back to the ground.
I lent my Snowbird 3, with a liner, a R 3.1 rated 5 cm Nemo flyer mat, reflecting mat and a 2cm foam mat to my 13 year old niece. Her school class were sleeping in tents with -8 degrees temperatures two weeks ago. It.

That sounds unpleasantly cold! 🥶 I’m still testing my sleepingbag (Outwell Camper Supreme), so I can’t tell if it’s good in winter yet, but it’s very comfortable and roomy. It’s a 4-season bag, so I’m hopeful about sleeping in the cold. But! I can recommend the “Ultim comfort” self inflating mattress from Decathlon. It’s R-rated around 8, and for me, a somewhat bigger side-sleeper, it’s surprisingly comfortable, even on the hard ground. Combined with a cot, it’s downright excellent.

I use a thermarest neo air xtherm max R value 6.9 and a Criterion Quantum 450 down sleeping bag. Although expensive to buy , a decent sleep system is essential for a good night's sleep. Since buying the thermarest I have not looked back but there are other brands available to suit your budget and preference . atb

Thank you for the recommendations. I will look in to them. I've always bought cheap pads and bags before but come to winter and suffered.

Nooo it's fine. I enjoy reading the comments and I learn something too. Im not here to tell people A,Y and Z and that's the end of it.
I give advice and opinions on camping gear for sure. I also have experience that can help. But equally I learn from others too. Like your good self.
