I recently got hired at a company as a 3D generalist. Later I came to find I got the job over a former ILM artist. The guy who hired me straight up told me I got the job because I was so eager to learn and was scrappy and efficient with my use of Blender. Never stop learning! It's the joy of life.
Something similar happened to me, I got a job as Junior Art Director in Brazil, even though I was only 20, My 3D portfolio with blender (artistation / instagram) helped me a lot. #BlenderPower kkkkkk
Beat out an ILM guy? That's great! Probably a better economical decision too. Just because you worked at ILM, doesn't mean your automatically the cream of the crop. Not mutually exclusive. I *think* I'm in a similar situation. I'm still trying to figure out if I got my job because I've been using Blender for the past 5 years, or because I had supervised a team of Maya riggers for 12 years, prior to going full-on with Blender. In any case, I make no secret about why I use what I use... and (most importantly) what direction I'm going. The future is looking... interesting.
This has to be one of the best interviews of what VFX employers look for. It is a goldmine of information and inspiring for all students wanting to go into the VFX artist industry. Great job Andrew and congratulations to Cory and Lawson for making Blender 3D stand out in the VFX world!
Could you do some VFX tutorials, focusing more on what's different to doing a render by itself, and also maybe some things you can do in blender, to make it easy to composite later, like matching light and other things like that. Thanks
For matching the light it's not really difficult, it just takes time. Use area lights and stuff, matching the color and the intensity and the direction. To make stuff easier to composite go film>transparent.
i am happy that they are allowing people to use blender in their production, this opens door for many blender artists, so come on US blender users go get those jobs and pave the way for the rest of us.
This was really great to watch. And it's really good to know that there are companies out there who use Blender in this way. And what's more important is how they look at artists. How they can tell who is a professional one and who's not quite there yet. I've met only a few people who shared similar thoughts. I think this is a very good path they are on right now.
Awesome interview. Particularly because of the detail in the discussion. Blender is mentioned and why, the process of getting involved and the truth that its now easy to use. Detail about shot composition and frame rates etc. So rare in industry discussions but vital to bridge the gap between amateur and pro work.So great Barnstorm is happy about using Blender and proud to say it.
Great interview & discussion. Both inspiring AND full of hard-headed, practical realities. I especially enjoyed the respectful rapport between Cory Jamieson & Lawson Deming who seem to have very different -- but complementary -- personalities. Learned a lot! Thank you.
It is important to note that you mostly only get to hear from the people that became successful, there could be plenty of people that have not been successful that have gone thru just about everything the successful people talk about and still failed.
Best interview yet. The stuff about learning about photography and filmmaking is so bang on I think. I feel like I picked up blender quite quickly because I had spent so much time learning about photography first that I avoided the pitfalls of bad 3d art like poor lighting and composition. I still can’t model for shit and my animation skills are sub par but no one notices because I can deliver a decent end result.
This was so inspiring!Thank you so much Andrew for bringing us this valuable content! Now I gonna work on some of my shots!!Merry Christmas Eve to everyone!
Having these in podcast audio form as well would be awesome if there will be more of these interview videos. Cause I love these interview videos on the 3D industry now but it would be even better if I could just listen to it on the fly like during a long trip or waiting for someone.
I want to personally thank Andrew for causing me to loose literally 100s of hours of sleep. I found Blender by chance working on a video for a Texas A&M graduation class video over a year ago. If not for you Andrew I would have not gotten past the initial daunting learning curve. I really feel I found something I am passionate about. I have spent over a year learning Blender, I probably spend 40 hours a week practicing, sometimes until 4am. Thanks
56:13 I can understand engagement and willingness to solve problems, but this approach was always annoying me in this industry. They just expect from you to stay at work overtime. Okay this is my passion, i do what i love but sorry i also have family and no amount of money will compensate this time i could spend with my family and see how my child grow up. Something is wrong here. Some employers won't give you day or two off after such work, they will pay you for it, okay but you have to make another project right away. I'm curious what you people think about it and how many of you have this kind of problems with your time managing.
this is a problem in this industry as every project have a deadline and you have to make it in time, either if you're working in a studio or as a freelancer
yea, I was really engaged in the talk, then I got really turned off. well, if there is an exchange like, work this much overtime, give yourself this much to this project within your body and mind limitations, and the compensation will be a fair amount of days off and or payment, then it might be a fair trade. of course the talk should not be limited to this argument only, but then again, who is going to read this reply hopefully there will be more fairness in the future for employees in many instances.
You should put these out in podcast form. Long form media like this that is largely audio based flourishes in podcast form. Especially this one has some more general ideas that are a good learning experience for any field not just 3d/vfx work.
I LOVE these interviews. For people just don't have anyone to talk to about VFX it's very interesting hearing others ideas and perspectives. If you have the chance, I would to see one of these with Alan Melikdjanian (Captain Disillusion)
I forgot how much work it is to be in the industry for VFX. Definitely don't have the chops to be in that field. I am glad that I have 'resigned' to be a 3d hobbyist and am loving learning Blender and making fun stuff.
11:28 This is one of the most brilliant career related things I've ever heard, really puts it into perspective. Everything else is just a tool. EDIT: LOL I just noticed the Poliigon mugs, clever

First, amazing interview and amazing studio (my jaw drops at what they do). I don't own a studio so I can only comment based on my opinion, but I would say work life balance is vital to great work as an artist. Not that these guys are advocating otherwise, but if I had a studio I would try to make sure people didn't stay and work overtime all the time. Deadlines approach, and projects get complicated but you definitely don't want a typical Google situation where people practically live at work because then they can't step back and critique themselves with fresh eyes (or have a life). I can say as a Blender addict (I work with it at work, home after work and even on the bus) sometimes you start to go orange and Blend out lol. That being said, putting in tons of hours is the only way IMO to get better and I 1000% agree that you should be suspect of anyone who thinks they are amazing in Blender. I think you can be proud of things you have done in Blender but the more hours you put in and the more you CRAVE scrutiny of your work, the more you know just how much you really don't know :)
These guys are a lot more forgiving than all of the industry people I've met, all the VFX people I've met were really fussy, they want to know whether your career path is in 2D or 3D VFX, they want specific reels, they want specialists, they want something original, they want proof you can work in a team, they want you to work on your reel but only the parts they're interested in, they want you to know someone at the company, they never give you any feedback on your actual work, they just make HR excuses. Just give me a junior level position, explain what you want done, how you want it done and i'll do my best to make it happen. I wish more companies were like these guys.
Why do I don't get the confirmation email from Poliigon? I tried different adresses but it didn't work. I'm now waiting for a week but the confirmation doesn't show up. What am I supposed to do?
Sir ..l am using blender 2.8.. When I set a path for camera or any other objects to follow during animation..it all goes wierd.. Like the objects go faaaar away from the path..and if I grab them to adjust position by pressing 'G' key.. They don't move properly.. Please tell me how can I solve this..? I used the same settings as 2.7
hey Blender Guru, did you see/did they mention how they work matte paintings into their pipeline? Are the compositors creating their own matte paintings?
why does another animation studio called theory animation has "the man in the high castle' as part of their portfolio? did barnstorm work with this company
So, they are employing generalists. In this case they give big amount of salaries right? Cause its not easy to find the people who can do whatever job you give and solve any problem during the production.
Nice interview, indeed Maya is a huge package, complicated at first look but its easy to use if you understand the principle behind it...maya fluid sims are easy to set belive me..the ui scares ppl but its only 3 menus over dozen that harness the desired look of what you're looking for...it is frustrating if you dont understand the key words..the more you play with maya the more it becomes friendly
Hello friend, can you teach me how to create perfect 3d character model with texturing and rendering.Because i like the way you are teaching me.So please make a tutorial series of character modelling.please....
i hope someone will read.. Does anyone know if I can render an animation on a faster device and then move the file back to the original device? The point is that in the faster device I don't have all the texture maps saved so if I try to render sequences will not appear, so I was wondering maybe I could just render on the fast one, save the file as AVI, move it back to the old one with all the maps.. Will it work?
