My mom used to always tell me this when I would watch this as a kid, but the woman that plays Meredith's mom, Aunt Vicky, was the "Meredith" character in the original Parent Trap, and in that one her name was actually Vicky. I love stuff like that, when there's cameos in movies for kids that only the adults at the time would understand.
to shed some light on it for you guys, elizabeth was very much afraid of 'happily ever after' she left because she was afraid. she backed off in the wine cellar because she was afraid. and she left for london again, because she was afraid. she thought she was protecting herself by leaving, all times.
Fun fact, there was an experiment done in America where they split up twins and triplets at birth and placed them with different families to track how they turned out under different circumstances. Some of the kids who were split up, eventually discovered that they were part of an experiment and won compensation from those involved because of how messed up their lives turned out.
@@ElKamaleon777 off the top of my head it was around the 70's when it started and it wasn't until the subjects were in their mid-late 30's that they realised they had been separated from each other.
There's an excellent documentary about that exact subject called Three Identical Strangers and just how devastating the results were for the kids involved.
In the original version, the parents' split makes a lot more sense. Every time they meet up in the movie, they start arguing at the drop of a hat. During the date set up by the twins, the dad says they did the right thing when they divorced due to all the fighting, and he and the mom both admit to being hard to live with.
There was a documentary called Twinsters several years ago. It's about adult identical twins meeting as adults through social media and not knowing they were twins beforehand. Both were adopted to different countries (USA and France). I got to meet them once and thought of this movie because one has an accent and both have amazing careers (fashion designer and actor).
it's bad enough separating siblings in divorces or adopting them out to different families, but it should honestly be illegal to separate twins like that :( glad the girls got to meet again, but I'm sure there are sadly many others who never met or knew of their twin/sibling's existence. it's an awful system tbh
1:20 The reason why in the opening credits says “Introducing Lindsay Lohan”, is because this was Lindsay Lohan’s first movie role. Like, before she was in Mean Girls, Freaky Friday and tons of other movies, this was the first movie she ever starred in.
When I was a kid and watched this movie for the first time, before I even knew who Lindsay Lohan was, I honestly thought the twins were real, and I was legit mad that "only one of them" had been credited for the movie. Justice for the forgotten Lohan twin! 😂
A childhood classic that TRULY is insane when you think about the logistics of this custody and switch and parenting as an adult LOL! I adore this still and fun fact - one of the girls who is Annie's friend at camp is a young Kat Graham/Bonnie of the Vampire Diaries.
@@maloneaqua It's suggested that the twins were born in USA. If that's the case, both of them would have both American and British citizenships. American citizenship is granted by _jus soli,_ that is, by being born in national territory. However, British citizenship is granted by _jus sanguinis,_ that is, being born from a parent (Elizabeth) who already has the citizenship. So citizenship shouldn't be a problem for the kids, maybe for the parents.
“Has anything like this ever happened in real life?” Yes. Identical triplet boys were intentionally split up at birth and adopted by 3 different families in a secret social experiment. There’s a documentary about it called “Three Identical Strangers”. They happened to meet at college and it freaked everyone out.
I think the splitting the kids up makes a bit more sense in the original version from the 60s when divorce was a much bigger deal, especially for women, but regardless it's such a messed up concept. I think a main reason it works is becuase the actors that play the parents are very charming and likable so you can almost forget how terrible it is that they both decided to never see one of their children again just becuase they didn't like their ex. But I still love the movie and have seen it dozens of times since I first saw it in theaters when it originally premiered when I was a kid.
The iceberg comment is actually so accurate for the opening titles, considering their marriage ends maybe a year later. I always wondered why they actually split. It’s vague at best. It could have been an iceberg for all we know.
yeah, i rewatched this during the early parts of the pandemic and was so shocked at how much hallie pissed me off! I LOVED her as a kid and watching it back, it was like "annie did nothing wrong. ever. wtf hallie"
I always thought Annie was the more "mature" twin. She had the difficult task of dealing with Meredith. That conversation at the garden swing showed that Annie wasn't afraid to confront Meredith. I'm not sure how the more impulsive Hallie would have handled it. I believe Annie learned from her businesswoman mom over the years--even learning French at her young age.
12:45 Annie was most likely in trouble for the bed thing, that's why the Marvas were coming to her cabin in the first place. (that's how my parents explained it to me when I was a kid, I think) OR the Marvas are punishing Annie because she obviously knew about the bucket and that everything was not fine in the cabin and lied to them about it so that they walked into the trap, too.
It was a surprise inspection as Marva Sr says over the bullhorn. Then again the Marvas did go to Annie’s cabin first… Actually both reasons make sense when you think about it. Annie could have said something about the trap but didn’t and lied but she had already escalated things with the bed prank which led to Hallie’s group setting the trap in the first place. I think if Marva Sr hadn’t punished both of them and forced them to get along their feud would just continue. That was Ms. Inch’s reasoning in the original anyway.
I was just a kid when Diana died so for years I always pictured the mom in this when people mentioned her lol. Even though I knew what she looked like, I couldn't help but think of Natasha. RIP to both. 💖
I love the way they said "they have to be with someone, otherwise they can't be happy!" with so much sass. 😂That's one of the tropes I've always hated, cause god forbid someone be happy and single🙄
I grow up with my single mom... I was 8 when this movie come up, and of course, the idea of having a secret twin who live this this dad I didn't know is like a REAL BIG DREAM for longer than I can admit it 😅 I was obsessed with this movie as a child & always love it now 😊
omg same! single mom raised, I always wished I had a twin. my mom no honey not possible I do not have a a twin. but we both love watching this movie together to this day 😂 one of our favorites 😊
I think the reason that Meredith’s mother tells Annie to call her Aunt Vicky is because she’s supposed to be stereotypically insecure about her age and being “grandma” is a title with an indicator of age. My mom initially refused to be called grandma (or any granny or anything else) when my brother and SIL announced they were expecting a baby, but at some point she got past it and refers to herself as grandma.
The "don't teach your kids poker" thing reminded me that my dad taught my cousins and I to play when we were all younger than 10. We were all stuck in a cabin during the summer with no air conditioning and nothing else to do so it was a great way to pass the time! Despite the sucky circumstances, it actually became a very fond memory for me because of that! We've made it a tradition to all have a poker night whenever we all go on vacation now (no actual gambling involved most of the time lol).
My dad taught me 2 play when I was like 8. N we bet w candy. Super fun n at 1 point I said I wanted to b a pro poker player🤣 my dad was like "go 4 it kiddo. But buy me a house when u do"
I broke up with my bf when i was 21. I felt like there was mixed signals, told him if he told me stay, I'd be here. He shrugged and told me to do what i wanted. I moved away. 3ish years later, he saw me in our home town and I was convinced to have a conversation with him. I understood that we didn't end because of an issue any deeper than being immature and horrible communicators. Anywho... we're getting married in June. 😊😊😊
At the start it’s the amazing Nat King Cole. I never got all the Princess Di references as a kid. The revenge dress 💀💀 Meredith’s actress nailed it, she’s so fun to hate and has great comedic timing.
This movie was my entire world as a kid and I still love it today! It's cheesy and corny but so nostalgic and makes me feel happy everytime I watch it!
I cannot believe how well the Twin effect has aged over the years. I still cannot spot a single seam or mistake. Lohan is incredibky skilled, the editing is ON POINT, and it makes for a crazy experience man.
I loved this movie so much as a kid. I vividly remember rewinding my VHS tape copy of this film every weekend just to rewatch it all the time. To this day, it’s still a classic that my mom loves to rewatch with me
Fun fact: the actor who played the little boy at camp was actually Lindsay's younger brother, Michael. Her younger sister, Aliana, also made an appearance as a little girl in the airport.
This movie really isn't far fetched for me honestly, I found out at 14 I had an older half brother that everyone knew about apart from me. Literally did the whole having to meet a sibling that everyone kept secret, and to make it worse I met him for the first time at a funeral so yeah lol.
Funnily enough my husband has two sets of younger siblings (from different stepmothers) that were told about each other only when they were out of high school and just met for the first time two weeks ago at a funeral. (They are half siblings as well)
@@AriOntheGardenWall Okay that is a scary co-incidence, what is it with introducing half siblings to each other at funerals??? Probably the worst time to be like "by the way, this is your sibling that you've never met or heard of before!"
I recently watched the 60s movie and I thought the whole time it was actual twins because “surely they couldn’t do that with one actor in the 60s” but they did! It was one kid!!
I used to mix up the plots of this movie and that other one with the Olsen twins. Every time I watch Parent Trap I keep on waiting for the ruined wedding scene that just never happens bc my mind played tricks on me lmao
I just saw something last week about triplets that were separated at birth and sent to 3 different families. 2 of them found each by sheer coincidence when they were 19. You come to find out that the "adoption agency" was basically separating multiples as an experiment to see if similarities still occur while separated. It was wild. I'm pretty sure there's a documentary so yeah, this could totally happen.
1. The song that Lindsay is singing while waiting for the elevator alone- (“Let’s get together ya ya ya…”) was a song the girl’s sang for their parents in the original version. 2. Lindsay also said that it was super hard to find someone who had her same hair colour and height to say her lines to, but she was so happy when they did. 3. I also always thought Martin was gay, but the movie being made in the 90’s I wonder if the world wasn’t ready for that conversation yet kinda like how Disney disregarded everything.
There’s a documentary called Twinsters where Samantha Futerman (actress from California in Memoirs of a Geisha) was contacted by a fashion designer in France named Anais. Anais’ friends realized Samantha looked familiar - in fact she looked just like Anais. They were real life twins separated at birth and both adopted out. To this day their birth mother maintains that she only had one child.
The little things I noticed is when annie admitted to chessy she went into her English accent and when halle did she went back to her American accent .
I always said the same thing, that their real parents were Martin and Chessy. I had both parents, my dad used to work all day and then he was very depressed bcs he lost a lot of people he loved, but my mom was very much present but she also had two other children (my older brothers) and she needed to manage a farm, and take care of my cousins as well, so I had a live-in nanny, she was my mom as well. Up until I was 10 more or less, bcs i realized it was weird to other people, i called my mom "Mamá Patty" and my nanny "Mamá Yrene". To this very day, I'm 26 now almost 27, she is part of my life, Yrene is the person for whom I want to make money for, I want to give her a good rest of her life, I want her to rest, I want her to finally be able to stop working, i want to be financially stable so I can take care of her. So even when I was very young, I was always irked by how no one acknowledged Martin, and Chessy were the real parents.
Actuallyyy, I’m pretty sure The Parent Trap (1990) is a reboot/remake of The Parent Trap (1961) which obviously had a similar plot. Pretty sure Aunt Vickie played Meredith in the 1961 film!
Hayley Mills played Hallie and Annie. She was also very talented. but the special effects were extremely primitive--like split screens where you can practically see the lines. It was a super popular film, and Hayley Mills ended up cutting a record with the main song--Let's Get Together.
As someone who wore a mini top hat fascinator that had a birdcage veil for my wedding... how dare you? 😂😂😂😂 And yes it was definitely because I saw this movie as a kid
Fun fact: Meredith Blake's mother, Vicki, is the girlfriend from the original Parent Trap movie made in 1961 and she plays the same character which makes this movie an unofficial sequel to that film.
Something I noticed, Martin, the butler, was in Captain America The First Avenger, he was the guy who rejected Steve from being in the military at the very start
The only point I’ll give to Meredith is her being upset about the camping trip situation. If I was getting married and my fiancé’s ex-wife showed up out of nowhere right after I got engaged and both her and my fiancé are making love eyes at each other and reminiscing then my fiancé is absolutely not going on an overnight camping trip with her. I can’t be mad at her for trying to set that boundary. Yea she’s the mother of his kids, but usually exes don’t do sleepovers together once they’ve broken up, and that’s especially not happening if I don’t know her at all.
YESS, LOVE THIS MOVIE! Another awesome reaction! Just signed up to be a *Solid Bud* and cannot wait to see you guys continue to grow and rock it out!! :) Thanks for all your hard work and great entertainment!
Found it funny how you expected Elizabeth’s house in London to be bigger (and therefore Nick would be the wealthier of the two) because do you know how many millions of pounds (£) a townhouse in older, wealthy areas of London and surrounds (like Kensington, Chelsea, Westminster etc) is? 😅
13:04 I think this wasn't quite the "We don't know who started it, so we'll just punish both of them," logic as the "These two have been at each other's throats most of their time here, so let's lock them in a room together, they'll either lol each other, or sort out their differences, either way, no longer my problem."
My dad has always said that he never wanted another kid because I was enough for him(we’re very close). Meanwhile my mom had four other children and only two of them are fully related. I’m the oldest and very clearly the least favorite because I try to “parent her children” when she barely does it herself😃 Love you dad!❤️
Fun fact Elaine Hendricks aka Meredith absolutely loves the outdoors, she loves hiking and camping too. Also Elaine played a character named Evian in Super Star. “Your parents named you after bottled water”
13:01 - Feel that. A girl next to me was talking to her friend and when I looked at her the teacher snapped and kicked me out of the classroom. Bro, I was chewing my nails, it was clearly not me.
What I find hilarious is that Nick has apparently not changed a bit in 10 years. He married his first wive after one (?) night and now he was about to get married for a second time to someone he's known one summer.
I still don't know which declaration of love is better - here in the 90s movie where he shows her that he has the wine bottle from their wedding and every bottle of that vintage, or the 1960s movie when he tells her about the little things he misses like finding that his shaving razor is dull because she used it on her legs or finding her hair clips mixed up with his fishing hooks (things that annoyed him hen they were married he now misses when they're divorced), that it's no fun having clothes closet to himself and no fun swearing if she isn't there to act like she's shocked by it, summarising it with a 'nothings any fun without you'.
Fun Fact for those who don't know already. As the Bud's guessed the story is based on a book, but the piece of literature was wrong. It was based on a book by famed German Children's Book Author Erich Kästner called Das Doppelte Lottchen (Or Lisa and Lottie in English, apparently). In the original the girls were from Germany and Austria respectively.
Was waiting for someone to say that! It's my mum's favourite book so I've read it before I even knew this movie existed and it's so strange to me that no one seems to know what story this is based off of.
Twins being separated at birth and meeting later have happened in real life, but well, it's usually not a feel-good romcom where the parents get back together in the end. There's a few documentaries out there about Korean twins who ended up separated, because Korea went through a pretty rough period where people just couldn't afford to feed their kids, and the western world was looking to foreign countries for adoption. Twinsters (available on Netflix) was about a pair of twin girls, one grew up in the USA and the other in France, they found each other when one of the French twins' friends saw the US twin on a youtube video and thought 'that looks just like my friend' and it led to them reuniting. 'aka Dan' is an American-korean youtuber with a documentary series that follows him finding out about his birth parents, and surprise, he's got a twin brother that his parents kept.
Natasha Richardson who plays the mum in this movie (RIP) and Joely Richardson who plays Anita in the live action 100 Dalmatians are sisters. I never noticed how similar they were when I was a kid.
Actually it’s not based on Prince and the Pauper but a German Story book written by Erich Kästner in 1949 called ‚Das doppelte Lottchen‘ it’s been one of my favourite books when I was younger!
Canadian here 🙋🏻♀️ and I was lucky enough that I went to summer camp every year 🥰 from like 9 or 10 years old on! And it was sleep away camp! Started off like 1 week and then 2! And then my last year I went away for a month! I definitely liked it more when I was little but it was cool and the aesthetic was extremely similar to this tbh! Also we had Californians and Brits would literally fly to Canada to go to the camp!
Abbey road is very busy because of tourists. Not gonna lie I did take a quick photo over there while studying abroad in london. I’d think if you’re a local you’d know if you don’t wanna get stuck waiting there to pick another road to drive through, but i get it cause if there was a busy road people took photos in near my house I’d be annoyed getting stuck waiting
In this situation they have a stand-in look alike that Lindsay Lohan would act with, the difference is every scene with the "twins" was filmed twice. All movies have stand in's though
I went to a camp very similar to this one growing up (in the US) and it was pretty common to have girls from other countries come because of how popular the camp was
My mom told me she had a group of friends in college who played dare poker and cause they were all friends they wouldn't dare each other to do anything crazy but yeah poker without money just dares.
I remember as a kid I never thought Meredith was evil. Not the best, but not evil. She got the bad end of the stick though. Her almost daughters in law were tormenting her and her fiancé was stolen by her idol 😂 (I'm aware it's stepdaughter couldn't remember the word at the time 💀)

to shed some light on it for you guys, elizabeth was very much afraid of 'happily ever after' she left because she was afraid. she backed off in the wine cellar because she was afraid. and she left for london again, because she was afraid. she thought she was protecting herself by leaving, all times.
Fun fact, there was an experiment done in America where they split up twins and triplets at birth and placed them with different families to track how they turned out under different circumstances.
Some of the kids who were split up, eventually discovered that they were part of an experiment and won compensation from those involved because of how messed up their lives turned out.
What? When?
@@ElKamaleon777 off the top of my head it was around the 70's when it started and it wasn't until the subjects were in their mid-late 30's that they realised they had been separated from each other.
Holy ethics violation, Batman! 💀
There's an excellent documentary about that exact subject called Three Identical Strangers and just how devastating the results were for the kids involved.
If my twins out there we both are getting ours
In the original version, the parents' split makes a lot more sense. Every time they meet up in the movie, they start arguing at the drop of a hat. During the date set up by the twins, the dad says they did the right thing when they divorced due to all the fighting, and he and the mom both admit to being hard to live with.
Just found this out on a podcast recently that Lisa Ann, Walter who plays Chessy ended up having a set of twins born on October 11
What?! That’s incredible!!
@@ifeelpretty5790 yeah! She was the chicks in the office podcast! Awesome episode she talked a lot about the parent trap and Abbott elementary
Coincidence?
There was a documentary called Twinsters several years ago. It's about adult identical twins meeting as adults through social media and not knowing they were twins beforehand. Both were adopted to different countries (USA and France). I got to meet them once and thought of this movie because one has an accent and both have amazing careers (fashion designer and actor).
Yes! I was gonna comment this when they asked if anything like this has happened.
it's bad enough separating siblings in divorces or adopting them out to different families, but it should honestly be illegal to separate twins like that :( glad the girls got to meet again, but I'm sure there are sadly many others who never met or knew of their twin/sibling's existence. it's an awful system tbh
I laughed for a solid 5 minutes that you assumed Hallie was going to bludgeon Meredith with that rock! That would have been so dark. 😂
1:20 The reason why in the opening credits says “Introducing Lindsay Lohan”, is because this was Lindsay Lohan’s first movie role. Like, before she was in Mean Girls, Freaky Friday and tons of other movies, this was the first movie she ever starred in.
They know that, it's just weird to see "introducing" when you've seen her in a lot of memorable roles when she got older
Lindsay Lohan played her role as well in The Parent Trap that i for real thought she was a twin in real life
Likewise
The lizard scene TRAUMATIZED me to this day I’m afraid of them
When I was a kid and watched this movie for the first time, before I even knew who Lindsay Lohan was, I honestly thought the twins were real, and I was legit mad that "only one of them" had been credited for the movie.
That was my first thought. Plus not sure how citizenship would work.
“Has anything like this ever happened in real life?”
Yes.
Solid point, I totally get what you're saying! - Sam
I can’t forget. The whole premise is awful and the parents are shit. Hate the whole idea of this movie.
Good on him for instantly choosing them the second she gave him an ultimatum lol
(that's how my parents explained it to me when I was a kid, I think)
OR the Marvas are punishing Annie because she obviously knew about the bucket and that everything was not fine in the cabin and lied to them about it so that they walked into the trap, too.
It was a surprise inspection as Marva Sr says over the bullhorn. Then again the Marvas did go to Annie’s cabin first…
Actually both reasons make sense when you think about it.
I love the fact that Elizabeth James was based on Lady Diana.
Also, Natasha Richardson is a delight. Also, impeccable comic timing. RIP.
I was just a kid when Diana died so for years I always pictured the mom in this when people mentioned her lol. Even though I knew what she looked like, I couldn't help but think of Natasha. RIP to both. 💖
@@katwebbxoBoth were taken too soon.
@@PokhrajRoy. Just going to comment that as well 😢 Both of their tragic deaths were premature and preventative.
I love the way they said "they have to be with someone, otherwise they can't be happy!" with so much sass. 😂That's one of the tropes I've always hated, cause god forbid someone be happy and single🙄
Yeah, it's the worse when they do it in the last few minutes, introducing a new character in order to couple them off
I grow up with my single mom... I was 8 when this movie come up, and of course, the idea of having a secret twin who live this this dad I didn't know is like a REAL BIG DREAM for longer than I can admit it 😅 I was obsessed with this movie as a child & always love it now 😊
Same!! It was my favorite movie as a child for this reason lol
omg same! single mom raised, I always wished I had a twin. my mom no honey not possible I do not have a a twin. but we both love watching this movie together to this day 😂 one of our favorites 😊
But buy me a house when u do"
@@AtomicPuffin I always joked that I was going to go to the casino and win a lot of money once I was older 😂

24:04 So glad to find someone else who loves the Jakaranda song!
At the start it’s the amazing Nat King Cole. I never got all the Princess Di references as a kid. The revenge dress 💀💀
Meredith’s actress nailed it, she’s so fun to hate and has great comedic timing.
This movie was my entire world as a kid and I still love it today! It's cheesy and corny but so nostalgic and makes me feel happy everytime I watch it!
Anyone else been watching this on a loop all day? Just me? Okay. 😂
Glad you liked it that much Jana! 😁 - Sam
That’s honestly how I am too! Playing reaction videos on loop are so comforting, especially for background noise
To this day, it’s still a classic that my mom loves to rewatch with me
Clicked so fast. This is one of my ultimate comfort movies. I wore the VHS tape out growing up lol. 💕
i really appreciate that a boy showed up to a girls camp and they just.... let him stay the whole summer
Fun fact: the actor who played the little boy at camp was actually Lindsay's younger brother, Michael. Her younger sister, Aliana, also made an appearance as a little girl in the airport.
Martin and Chessy are the best characters in the movie, and my kid mind was blown when they fell in love 😍
Oh my goodness I didn’t even realize Natasha Richardson passed away, that makes me so sad she was a brilliant actress and so wonderful in this movie.
I literally memorized the monologue that Jessie gives Hallie when she realizes who it is. I literally cry watching it 😂☺️☺️
Happy 25th Anniversary to ‘The Parent Trap’! Thank you, Nancy Meyers for creating such lovely characters with the best of actors.
this was one of my comfort movies growing up lol. i never get tired of it. i miss lindsay so much, all her movies were so fun.
She started acting again!
When Annie gets hit by the giant water balloon, my mom pointed out that you can see her step into the right place to be hit directly by it lol
He married Chessy, he is straight
There’s a documentary called Twinsters where Samantha Futerman (actress from California in Memoirs of a Geisha) was contacted by a fashion designer in France named Anais. Anais’ friends realized Samantha looked familiar - in fact she looked just like Anais. They were real life twins separated at birth and both adopted out. To this day their birth mother maintains that she only had one child.
The little things I noticed is when annie admitted to chessy she went into her English accent and when halle did she went back to her American accent .
17:18 - Their parents have literally been laughing at the since they were born. Haha
43:26 The woman playing Vicky - she was Vicky (the Meredith character) in the 1960s movie of 'The Parent Trap' with Haley Mills as Susan and Sharon.
Not to be nitpicky, but it is all based on a german book called "Das Doppelte Lottchen" written by author Erich Kästner
"I wouldn't call growing up next to a vineyard a pauper" literally snorted, thanks lmao
As someone who wore a mini top hat fascinator that had a birdcage veil for my wedding... how dare you? 😂😂😂😂 And yes it was definitely because I saw this movie as a kid
"Someone was saying in the comments about how hats with weddings gowns can work. Just look at the Parent Trap!" LOL that was me. :D
Fun fact: Meredith Blake's mother, Vicki, is the girlfriend from the original Parent Trap movie made in 1961 and she plays the same character which makes this movie an unofficial sequel to that film.
Not to mention one of the twins softly singing "Let's Get Together" at one point, lol!
Something I noticed, Martin, the butler, was in Captain America The First Avenger, he was the guy who rejected Steve from being in the military at the very start
Speaking of estranged twins, there is a documentary called "Three Identical Strangers" about a set of triplets who all met each other in college.

27:34 Shoutout to the legend, Lisa Ann Walter who was iconic as Chessy.
This is one of y'all's best videos. I cannot pinpoint why, but I felt so genuinely happy watching it. Thank you so much! 💛
Yes
I see your point about poker and I raise you this point: play with cookies instead of poker chips. Makes it that much sweeter when you win lol
42:52 Martin and Chessy are very queercoded. It’s giving chaotic bisexuals.
