    Hi Russ thank you so much for the tour from silver City Michigan to Calumet Michigan my hometown. It sure looked great seeing it in a movie. By the way free parking on Sundays. Lol. The Big empty lot was because there was a fire lost about 3 or 4 buildings I believe. You do a great narrative also thanks.

    I'm watching this in 11/25/23. About the Quincey Copper Mine, now a National Park Service Historic Site---according to a quick Google scan of different sites, this interesting site has a huge dark side. Like so many industries in the 1800's, money and production was the goal. Like other "company towns" there were bonds and a true community, but the air was toxic, noise levels literally deafening, lung "green", the tailings were contaminated including arsenic, chemicals and acids, sewage and water used in manufacturing straight into the potable water source. The NPS has documented cancerous tumors on the fish. The Industrial Revolution made some people rich and the innovation propelled the technology. Like most mines and industrial complexes, the owners simply walked away, leaving the next generation to clean up the mess by taxing the public at large. I live near two Superfund sites. I enjoy seeing old industrial complexes to honor and respect the engineering and pure sweat and body parts lost to the gain of a paycheck, but part of me is angry that the owners who took the profits walked away, leaving a mess. This happens everywhere, including the factory where my dad worked for 38 years.

    I will watch every one of your videos. Excellent! The St.Anne's Church in Calumet, Michigan was a church less than 100 years. That building of sandstone opened in 1901, was empty and purchased by the municmunicipality/Psrk Service in 1994. I love architecture----the interior on Google is still beautiful.

    Another bit about Calumet: At some recent year, all the sidewalks and utilities were redone---$$$$--- likely a National Park Service money, my guess, and to achieve the aura of the late 1880's, the parking meters were moved discreetly against the buildings, overhead utilities moved underground, street lights appropriate style for era.

    • @ericsimandl3998
      @ericsimandl3998 Рік тому

      Parking meters next to the buildings; else they'd be buried in snowbanks after the streets are plowed. It's a UP thing.

    I really enjoy watching your UA-cam Channel, Russ! I love small towns! It's great that they keep the buildings in town so beautifully restored! That's Americana at its finest! I grew up in a small town, Weirton, WV. Here in Weirton, we had a old time hardware store with wooden floors. My Dad took me to the hardware store when I was little. I enjoyed going to the hardware store. I mean the hardware store was independently owned and operated. When you bought nails they had a set of scales and they would weigh out the nails and put them in a bag. As I had mentioned above, they had wooden floors. Sadly the owner died and the hardware store closed. He had the hardware store since the 1940s. He first retired about 10 years ago. Then he died last year. He was a well respected business man. Out of respect, I'm keeping him anonymous. He had wanted to leave the hardware store to his son but his son didn't want the store. I really don't understand why his son didn't want to keep the store open for business. Weirton's population is a little over 18,000. I wish you safe travels, Russ. Talk soon, Alan.

    Awesome! I recently was watching a live tik tok feed of someone talking to the dead in a cemetery in Cherry, Illinois. There was a coal mine disaster there in 1909. A lantern set hay on fire down below that fed the donkeys. What’s weird is I’m in Illinois and never heard of this. Maybe because we used to have coal mines in this area and didn’t want to scare us?

    The Douglas house was named after Douglas Houghton. Float copper was on top of ground that the glaciers moved. Ore was taken to the stamp mill and smelters. You walked right by a large green float copper. Calumet had a population bigger than Detroit years ago. It was being consider for the capitol of mi.
