This is the year that I get serious about decluttering my home so that I don't leave my kids a disaster to deal with after I am gone. My brother passed in 2007 and was an extreme hoarder. My sister and I had to deal with it. My neighbor who was a hoarder passed in Feb. last year and his kids are still dealing with the mess he left. I have always been frugal and mindful of my spending, but I have had a problem with getting rid of things that I feel I can still use even though I may not have used or worn them in many years. For 37 years I ran a retail and wholesale business that is now closed because it never recovered after Covid. I am left with 1000s of items that are valued far more than I want to donate or just liquidate, but sell online very slowly. I have made a game of it by using an excel sheet to keep track of the number of items that I sell, trash, or donate everyday. The goal is to remove 4000 items by next Jan.

That is honestly very thoughtful of you to consider what you're leaving behind ❤️

@@MiaDanielle When our mother went into an assisted living facility my sister took a picture of everything that she thought the family might want to have. We then chose those items we wanted to keep. Everything else was donated. I am doing that now with my stuff. The kids say nay or yea to the items. They are in their 40s and 50s so if they want it they get it now. They all have large homes and are settled in their communities.

@@olderandwiser78 I am doing the same. Anytime I am getting rid of something that I no longer want (especially if they might have an attachment to it) I always ask my them first, if they say no then I donate or sell.

Curating instead of collecting! Good point!

This was a great summary! One of the things that helps me is I don't shop on Amazon & definitely don't pay for Prime! I don't want my money going to Bezos & I don't want to buy things I don't need. I don't think I'll ever be as minimalist as you, but I can be more than I am now; that's the goal!!

I have been doing a wishlist for over two years and it really does keep your focus on purchasing what you intend and not on what you don't. I no longer experience buyers remorse since making a list. At the same time I also started buying more fair trade and ecocentric products. I have less but I am happier with my purchases because the quality is much better and last longer.

Wow, I have been doing wishlists for nearly ten years but I could never articulate what changed when I started doing this. And yes, it shifts the focus, you don't think about what you didn't buy but which wishes you were able to fulfill, especially in times when money is tight.

Because I don’t have much to spend I always have to save up for something before being able to buy it. This way I have time to think about what I really need instead of just want. But I also, like you, love a functional space instead of seeing all these knickknacks standing around the room. I do like some things to make my room more cozy, but just not so much anymore as I used to have. I learned from you and some other UA-camrs that I liked to have less and be more happy in my home this way.

Oh yes! I have a few wishlists too. I don't need need things but I'd like to own a better quality of those items later. I save those list for when I get more money or a birthday or Xmas list to give my family. I did that one year and my family got me everything I needed and I'm going to keep for a long time. 👍

Loved this entire video! For me I really like the idea of starting a wish list, sometimes I wake up at night and start watching videos and end up buying and never using. Most of the time just a big waste of time and money.

I actually think of my wishlist as a splurge list, and I try to prevent Impulse buying with my wishlist. ❤

Perfect length of video for a stir-fry... Great!
Word of caution - wishlists can become prophecy, maybe programming your subconscious to expect xyz item...
