  • Minimalist or not, we all tend to accumulate the same kinds of things around our homes. This list is well over 60 (possibly even 70!) easy things you can declutter TODAY that you won't miss. Grab the trash/donation bin as you hit play and declutter as we go! With the empty glasses cases: also get rid of old glasses - yes a back up pair is helpful but not three or four. And (at least in Germany) Opticians do actually collect old glasses and they get reused for people who cannot afford the frames.

    Yes to all of these!
    I have never hold on to any clothes because of sentimental reasons. Pass on your wedding dress. Chances are your daughter won't like the style when it's her turn.
    And while you are at it, when you toss your pillow try sleeping without one. For a lot of people it helps ease their back problems.
    Further additions:
    - Mismatched cutlery (unless this is the style you are going for)
    - your old phone / laptop
    - that one plant you don't like
    - the one fork / glass / spoon that is a bit sharp on the edges and hurts your lips
    - scratched sun glasses
    - dried up nail polish: It's dried up because you haven't used it
    - craft projects from your kids that are horrendous

    I totally agree with you on all these things. I still have to declutter my bedroom with all my cloths and shoes and my craftroom with way too many craft supplies and than my house is done. I must say that I keep everything that is already decluttered, the way it is now. No need to buy new stuff unless something will die on me. The only things that I do still buy are food, books (only cheap ones that will go to someone else as soon as I finished them) plants and flowers and I’m happy with that because I can throw them away when they die.

    I’m so guilty for holding on to outgrown baby stuff. We have a large family and i always feel like if I can use hand me downs the Earth breaths a little lighter and our budget. But then I have bins and boxes of outgrown clothes that are unused and sit.
    The space between our girls was big enough that the elastic in most of the clothes was shot and styles changed anyway. So I’m more willing to part with baby and kid things as they’re out grown instead of holding onto them. I keep a few special things and momentous and the rest gets taken to a resale shop or donated. That created so much space in my house and in my heart. I can’t explain how I could breathe a little easier and let the things go. In life now I spend less time managing the crap in our life and creating real time and space to spend with those little people I’m so crazy about. Mia I love the advice and your channel!

    So true about the paint. When we decided to repaint, I said I wanted bright white in whatever was "off the shelf" at Home Depot. No mixing, no later matching. We had our house repainted entirely in that. It might be Behr at our Home Depot but im not sure. We now get the 8 oz containers of both the eggshell finish and the semigloss for touch-ups. They take up as much room as a measuring cup.

      I have a couple old, yellowed sets from years ago that I never use. I know animal shelters often take old towels...I wonder if they take sheets. Mostly I use one set because I just wash them and put them back on the bed. Why go through the trouble of folding them? (Though I will probably switch them soon now that the weather is getting cooler; I like the tee shirt-type sheets in the winter because they don't get icy cold.)

      @@allein1001 Definitely check them out!
      I have donated a ton of old sheets, towels and blankets to my local animal shelters. They don't accept pillows and bedding because the animals (especially dogs) take them apart. I did a quick phone call with the shelter. The person I talked to was really nice and told me what they accept and can't use in a calm way without rejecting me when I asked about the pillows. Even dropping off the donations is super quick and easy, they open the gate and I just dump the stuff in a huge box that's standing there. It takes like 30 seconds. I don't even have to interact with anyone in person when I drop off my donations.

    My concern is the responsible disposal if all of the items we would not miss. I think I remember you doing some commentary on those topics before, but that is a huge hangup for me - I don't want to throw things in the landfill that could be used, but who would want them, where can they be recycled, etc. I know you have said you keep a bag of electronic stuff and take them to Best Buy. Do they reuse or recycle the components? Is it an earth-friendly option? Thanks for your work. Best bet (telling myself) is not to accumulate it all in the first place, but it is too late for that with the current collection.

    • @MiaDanielle
      @MiaDanielle  8 місяців тому +4

      Hi Miriam! I have definitely chatted about this before -- and there are a variety of things you can do. I've shared about my "use it up challenge" in the past as an option. You can also look to donate gently used items to local donation centers, women shelters, or even list them for free on Facebook. There are also specialized local charities. However if the item is old and not useable, there is no other place for than the trash unfortunately (like the paint in my video)
      We can only do our best, holding onto items and cluttering our home isn't the solution either, there's a balance 🤗

    Great list and inspiration!! I think we need to go through every drawer in our house again and be very realistic of what we never use. Those things needs to go, even if we intend to use them. I kept incent for years even though I don't like the smell of it anymore. 😅 I used to like it and still like the packages. I also have a very cool and beautiful blouse that I never use. I don't know why, because I look good in it... I should let it go. Diaries, letters and cards are hard to let go of, but I need to because I never read them. They feel like a burden to me.

    • @MiaDanielle
      @MiaDanielle  8 місяців тому +2

      Wear the blouse!! But if you're still not wearing it... definitely time to come to terms with it no longer having a place in your life.
