Prior to becoming a new creation in Christ, I would do all I could to avoid the poor. I visited a different church for Mass recently and walked almost 4 miles each way and the walk took me though a questionable area. Someone asked for cash and I don't carry cash so he asked if I could buy him 2 Butterfinger candy bars. I did this for him with gladness and thanked God afterward for placing the man in my path and giving me the strength not to avoid the situation.
As a former police officer I am super critical of giving money to people on the street. Not just because they could use it for drugs but because a good bit of the time these people are just scam artists that actually pan handle for a living. I've had some say they make more money, tax free, from pan handling then working a 9 to 5. There was actually a sting in my town that found a majority were doing it as a cover to sell drugs.
Yea, in most big cities most of the homeless you see asking for money are asking for drug money as free food is easily accessible in many places in the US and most people become homeless due to drug addiction to begin with
Our officers have warned about the same. One guy was working corners, sort of speak, in two towns. He admitted on the news, like a fool, that he was making 80K a year so why would he get a job. Needless to say, no one supported him anymore. Not saying that's the story for all. We can find those who are legit & need help without looking too far.
Yeah but it's not hard to use discernment. If you see a sad homeless person who isn't even asking for money, you can give to that person. Just ignore the "in your face" homeless. And maybe you do give money to someone who is going to buy alcohol ...so what? They are suffering and probably need an escape from this horrible planet we're living on.
Thank you for this video, Father. I'm a petite woman living in an urban area and often have to walk places after dark. I don't feel safe handing people money or going 'off the beaten path' with them to buy them food. Instead, I will direct people to an organization in the community that provides free meals to those in need, donate to churches and food banks, and make sure to pray for the people who approached me that day.
I don't advertise when I do give to the poor, but I do love helping them to the best of my ability. I've been incredibly blessed and I think the best way I can enjoy my blessings is by sharing the wealth.
Thank you for this post. I was in vocational rehabilitation working with others who were in similar situations. I learned something about my own capacity to give time, talent and treasure, in peer supportive relationships. I think anyone who is thinking about studying medicine, psychology, sociology, theology, philosophy, human services, hospitality, or any combination of these educational foundations should be required to at least have a semester's worth of direct interaction with the impoverished and the homeless populations.
I remember a news story of people donating their stimulus checks to local food banks. If you don't know the poor personally, resources like those are wonderful to donate to.
Here is the most helpful thing I ever heard on this topic. The question was asked, I have ten barns. How many do I have to give away? The answer was that that was the wrong question. Instead ask "How many CAN I give away?"
Thank you, Fr. Mark Mary, for not letting us off of the hook too lightly and for reminding us to explore our limits. I have been out of work for multiple years now, but I just started a new job in September. I've recently been recognizing with glee that I can once again afford to buy things for myself and my family, but until this video I hadn't thought of the need to change my tithing until this video convicted me.

Everyone those as the spirit dictates, I do as my conscience tells me, if I have food, like a subway I will offer it, but if they don’t want food , but money that tells me the chances are they want drugs or alcohol. I could be wrong, but it is my decision to make, God doesn’t force His will on anyone, you should give freely.
The last time I gave a homeless woman some cash(and water and oranges), I was on my way into the city to sell vegetables at a farmers market....On my way back from market, I drove by this same woman and she was high as a kite tweeking out in a gas station parking lot. Now, when this circumstance crosses my path, I will offer food or water or something like gloves or hat in cool weather.... Also, God asks we give with a joyful heart....not out of obligation.
I give to the poor through my church. We have so many people on street corners asking for money. A lot of them are drug addicts, so I don't give them money. I have given money to those that are not asking for anything. I am on limited income. I also enjoy helping my church help people in need.😊
Rather than cash, giving gift cards to local grocery stores is a way to help without worrying about providing cash for drugs, etc. Though that is my general approach, in talking to a homeless man I've met, he said that sometimes cash helps because he can then go to the thrift store and buy clothes, shoes, etc.
I have a wonderful Jewish-Agnostic friend who goes out twice a week in her town (which has a rather large homeless population) and gives out food and clothing and pet food and treats (many homeless people have pets which they love as much as all of us do). I am disabled and elderly so cannot go with her but I can fund her. I’m so grateful to be able to help in the only way open to me.
Here's my perspective, if I give something to the guy on the street corner, and he goes to buy drugs with it, or is ungrateful, that's on his soul. @@brandi8040 That's why I opt to give to Catholic charities rather than actually be the one handing things to them directly. It's something that I may need to overcome.

Here's my dilemma: I send money to Vietnam, where it goes a long way to help many. I also give to a priest who builds missionaries in Africa to help produce more priests. When I see a homeless person in California, I know the state has many programs and resources for the homeless, so I don't give to any homeless people in the USA. But I feel bad because I can see the homeless locally with my own eyes, whereas the money sent overseas is in good faith that it's doing good as intended. Thoughts?
Totally agree I don't understood why in this country we have poor people outside the United States are many that it doesn't matter how much they work still is not . enough
My mother works social services and there are never enough resources for those in need and many are not helped due to this or that disqualification or other bureaucracy or legal limitation. Give but give wisely. Know them and get to know them.
I often wonder what to do when I am in Greece and there are Gypsy women sitting begging in the street, often moaning that they have a sick child. People are very doubtful that they are telling the truth. If you give them then the next day they expect you to give again. I really wonder what they do with the money and am always torn… albeit I should buy them some bread rather than give cash?
Forgetting my ability to give. Should I be trying to discern a panhandler's actual need? There are panhandler's in my area that have been begging in the same general location for years. They are clearly recognizable. My town has even asked people not to give because they disrupt traffic in areas where they are located. I give to various charities in many other areas. It is, however, a real guilt trip I have (self-imposed) just bypassing these people.
Great video. Thank you for sharing. In my case, there are many times I encounter homeless men which some may be in places such as ‘halfway homes’ who stand alongside the interstate highway exits. I sometimes remember to carry a bag of petty cash for these individuals. But the question is, how much should I give to the men who stand alongside the interstate exits? I could give 10 or more. Or in some cases because of gas stations having gift cards perhaps. But If there’s someone here in the comments section who can give suggestions on how to tell them Jesus loves them even if I drive away and probably see them in a few days? I can’t pick them up and take them to a Catholic Mass and then take them back to the highway or the halfway home if that’s where they live. But at least if there’s someone type of Catholic prayer brochures I could give that would be a great idea. Anyone have suggestions?
Charity should not be an attachment to discipleship but it should be the primary responsibility of a person who acts in the person of Christ by virtue of his baptism and confirmation
As one of "the poor" myself, I would love to know if there's a proper way to ask for help? I am disabled, single, with no family left and one of the main issues I deal with is affording a sudden household emergency (HVAC, plumbing, etc). I live in a rural area and though I am a member of my local Catholic church, I have never seen any help offered for something like this. Does anyone have any ideas of who I might talk to for help? I'm also very shy about mentioning my struggles bc I feel like there are people who must be worse off than me.
Maybe your priest or the front office would have info? ❤ I live in western NC at the moment & resources have dried up near me. And then I'd rather a family (children) in need get the help. All I know is that we will be ok. Just keep praying & God will see us thru. ❤️💚❤️
I belonged to a Catholic walking group with my church. We were walking through the city and one of the women said she felt very uncomfortable being around homeless people so the leader changed the location so that she wouldn't have to be exposed to them. Sorry, but that's disgusting in my opinion and I quit the group. Oh, and they didn't want to allow anyone who wasn't Catholic to walk with us. Lol. Unreal.
Marry a Filipina and you will have more than enough poor people to give to that need money for food or medical.😅 My wife feels guilty and thinks I must be upset for how much we give. I've told her I don't have a choice in giving as I can't buy anything in America without a deep guilt knowing there is someone on my wife's island who needs the money to survive. Though we have free will from God, you really have no choice when it comes to doing the right thing.❤
Here where I live the ones left on the street I don't think are call themselves homeless any more because someone who becomes a homeless will accept help from wherever comes from But wherever is left in the streets they refuse to go to shelters this morning when I got out to work it was 28 degrees and on my route I sow Them sleeping on the side of the sidewalks what to do if there brain is not there any more. And some of them are aggressive
September 2018 rocked my family with the hurricane Florence. To lives and properties displaced we gave $45k. We also gave in 2020 COVID year. The "Treasure Principle" by Randy Alcom helped my giving reason why getting $105k in two months is just evident of God's blessings on my household. God never faltered on his written and spoken promises over my household.
It is the digital market. That's been the secret to this wealth transfer. A lot of folks in the US amd abroad are getting so much from it, God has been good to my household Thank you Jesus
Link to the PWA/MF episode? Interested in hearing what you have to say 😊 -- my issue is, "What *really* is 'impoverished,' and aren't i still quite far from it?" ... I HATE MONEY (which would be funny for my employer to hear) so ... I sometimes do foolish things with it....
I used to do so, but as soon as I give people money they asked if I know someone that sells weed, that is infuriating, I want to help people in need not support someone’s drug addiction, so instead or helping those people I donate to the church instead.
I came here look for an answer to exactly this. Years ago I was taught not to give money directly to the homeless because of the statistical likelihood that it would be used for drugs or other harmful substances. But I wasn’t taught what to do as an alternative. I give to legitimate organizations that help the homeless but that doesn’t mean that I can comfortably ignore the person in front of me that needs help. I’m thinking of getting a stack of Walmart or McDonalds gift cards to hand out instead (provided I don’t have the time to buy the person an actual meal).
I sometimes duck into a grocery store, buy some food, and go back and just give food. To me, it's less about solving all their problems and more about a gesture that someone cares.
Giving money to a stranger, living on the street is dangerous. I have taken homeless people to a sandwich shop, or Mc Donald’s, and bought them a meal. But I am not willing to possibly lose life and limb by doling out money.😊
I started volunteering my time at St Vincent DePaul for over 17 years. I get people asking for bitcoin or gift cards. This is a strain on my heart and how should I react?
Well I say it's better to give to the homeless man on the side of the street then to the preacher that buys the BMW and has four bedroom house and no kids but let Christ be the one that leads you to the giving...
I ignore beggars. So would you if you were carrying a child. Typically, they are not the classic, "I ran out of money and can't find a job" type of poor, they're mostly drug addicts that at times like to harrass others. I'm not always with a child, but I do have the moral obligation to take care of myself as I would a child.

What if I don’t help with homeless or the poor regularly but I am “generous” with tithing and giving to sisters and priests? Does that count or do I need to help the poor in addition?
I live on a budget. I donate $20 a month to the poor guy on the street and $20 to my church. I also have a 24 hour a month volunteer limit. I am working off my purgatory time.
@@ale21424 I guess I’m a little confused. Rich as in yes money but I do want to have a very big house, (just one big house to my liking I don’t want multiple properties) but I mean like an almost million dollar home. I have 4 kids and want them to have a room no matter what age they are in life. Even if they are 60 you never know. That’s all I want in this life is to own a very nice home and a reliable car. Obviously pay my bills but I really don’t nor want extra money. I have never been drawn to extremely expensive clothes, purses etc. the only material thing I want in life is a home no one can take from me.
@ poor people can also give even more than the rich, when giving from what you need to survive, not from your surplus. The perfect example is given by Jesus himself, about the old woman that gave 2 small coins.
Also to be fair, god, if he were actually real and cared, could (and would) just design a world that actually easily provided needed resources to everyone so that this issue never arose. Im sure people will regurgitate the ad nauseam Garden of Eden story and blame all of us for losing it, even though its literally not our fault since we literally were not there. thus god has no good reason to take that from us.
One of the BEST ways to serve without spending money is to visit your local nursing home!! They are so in need of company and appreciative!! Especially as Christmas approaches, many of them are abandoned there.
Out of the mouth of CHRIST regarding how to pray and to WHOM to pray: Matthew 6:9 KJV "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our FATHER which art in Heaven, Hallowed be THY NAME. 10 THY Kingdom come. THY Will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For THINE is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, for ever. Amen." Note: CHRIST addresses HIS prayer to the HOLY FATHER (and there is only ONE HOLY FATHER). CHRIST never prayed to dead people neither did any true believer in all the HOLY SCRIPTURES. Prayers were always addressed to GOD. So, either RCC tradition is right or GOD'S WORDS are right. It cannot be both.

In Lourdes, while on a Catholic mission trip, we were prohibited by the Bishop to hand out food because the gypsies were throwing it in the river.
Word.
please consider making an appointment at your church to talk to the priest, he will most likely know of resources that can offer assistance. 🙏
@@FiatVoluntasTua888 thank you, and yes, I keep praying and trusting 🙏 Will keep you in my prayers as well ❤️
@@grespinosa thank you!
Lol. Unreal.
What a banger.
I never give cash directly to a person, I may pay for gas for their car. I generally pray to God for them, which is better than cash in hand.
Marry a Filipina and you will have more than enough poor people to give to that need money for food or medical.😅
My wife feels guilty and thinks I must be upset for how much we give.
Excuse me for real?, how is that possible I have struggling financially, how was that possible?
The thought of knowing a change is coming just leaves that glimpse of hope. Thank you for this
Kindly let me know more bout this bimonthly thing you just mentioned. Please...
It is the digital market. That's been the secret to this wealth transfer. A lot of folks in the US amd abroad are getting so much from it, God has been good to my household Thank you Jesus
Her top notch guidance and expertise on digital market changed the game for me
Some ask for mony to eat but if i tell them to go to buy food they refuse
I always give something. What you do to the least of these........??
Giving money to a stranger, living on the street is dangerous. I have taken homeless people to a sandwich shop, or Mc Donald’s, and bought them a meal. But I am not willing to possibly lose life and limb by doling out money.😊
Isn’t it dangerous to “take them to McDonalds”?
In your charity, lets all pray 7 Hail Mary for the propagation of all Catholic Teachings and for the success of all Catholic Social Media Influencer that all may be guided by the Holy Trinity, Holy Family, all Great Saints, and Angels. I always pray that I become a successful Catholic Social Media Influencer to spread the teachings and Revelations of the Catholic Church and the entire Christendom. I hope and pray the Devotion to the Eucharist and the Holy Souls in Purgatory helps me.
What if I don’t help with homeless or the poor regularly but I am “generous” with tithing and giving to sisters and priests? Does that count or do I need to help the poor in addition?
God asks for only 10% of our income. Once that is set aside, consider your surplus. The surplus can be given to those in need.
I live on a budget. I donate $20 a month to the poor guy on the street and $20 to my church. I also have a 24 hour a month volunteer limit. I am working off my purgatory time.
I am the poor
What's the best way to help you?
I give water bottles and soft granola bars to the homeless.
That way they can’t buy drugs with them. 🙂
Is it ok to be a Luke warm Christian like in action? And is it ok to add or take away from Jesus words to better fit our modern needs and sensibility

Sometimes Detectives are the homeless. Yep, take them donuts and coffee
So, is it a sin to be rich?
Rich in terms of money? No. Just don't make it an idol and share your wealth(with boundaries/limitations)
No, unless you are extremely greedy, then yes. Read the gospel for enlightenment
An abundance of money is a gift. That’s meant for sharing. We have many “wealthy” people in our parish that give very generously.
Try sponsoring children through Chalice.
can you share the website address?
Also to be fair, god, if he were actually real and cared, could (and would) just design a world that actually easily provided needed resources to everyone so that this issue never arose.
Im sure people will regurgitate the ad nauseam Garden of Eden story and blame all of us for losing it, even though its literally not our fault since we literally were not there.
thus god has no good reason to take that from us.
What happens when it becomes a crime to even help the illegal immigrants? That’s what I wanna know fr.
If I see homeless on the corner I hand them my lunch
One of the BEST ways to serve without spending money is to visit your local nursing home!! They are so in need of company and appreciative!! Especially as Christmas approaches, many of them are abandoned there.
Out of the mouth of CHRIST regarding how to pray and to WHOM to pray:
Matthew 6:9 KJV "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our FATHER which art in Heaven, Hallowed be THY NAME. Amen."
Note: CHRIST addresses HIS prayer to the HOLY FATHER (and there is only ONE HOLY FATHER).
CHRIST never prayed to dead people neither did any true believer in all the HOLY SCRIPTURES. Prayers were always addressed to GOD. So, either RCC tradition is right or GOD'S WORDS are right. It cannot be both.
