And not to get too deep but that was kind of Tolkien’s whole deal - he’d seen war, and blood, and death, and he wanted to write a story about hope and fellowship and the power of love saving the day instead. Can’t say I blame him.

I thought Tolkien won when he mentioned cutting his teeth in the Battle of the Somme. That battle was more horrific even then the battles in Tolkiens or Martins books. And if you are going to write a book that includes soldiers, wars, and killing, Tolkien actually knows about it, he isn't just imaging how it would go.
Yeah! Also fun fact after watching Peter Jacksons newer film "They Shall Not Grow Old" he mentions how his grandfather fought in that same battle, so it's possible they could've fought together which I think is pretty neat.

@MrAuthor3DS Switch I could be wrong but I like to think that Tolkien writing The Lord of the Rings and the entire lore of Middle Earth was a way for him to overcome PTSD, it's not confirmed that he had PTSD but given what he wrote in the books it sounds like he was going through it and the books helped him cope.

The renegades actually know what they're watching, and what the context is, i rarely see any reactors actually getting all the reference in this ERB, they usually just litsen to the rhyme and basic stuff, they treat it like its a rap video, you guys actually breaks down the video, every reference, ever burn, you explain the story behind each of those, and that's mainly what makes your video a lot more interesting than other, Keep up the good work,

Led Zeppelin isn't the only metal band to pay homage to Tolkien. Rhapsody of Fire, Blind Guardian, and even Sabaton have made songs based on Tolkien's work. That was before Sabaton became a History Metal band. \m/

Sabaton made only one song, but it was amazing. Shadows is one of my favorite songs of all time.
While meant to be a burn, I felt that Martin's statement "tell your all seeing eye to find some sex in your movies," while meaning to burn Tolkien, back fired, because you're basically admitting at that point that you need sex in your work in order to make it popular, Tolkien made his super popular without sex.

Martin was calling him out on how obvious the ends of his books are,making them too predictable, thus making them boring.
Ninja NikNik boring for us (nerds on internet) in tolkien time this was gold ,, all fantasies were small like a prince who saves the princess,, but tolkien opened a world for example (the prince and who is his father and his grandfather and how his family was created and the wars they fought and the name of his family members and what they achieved) everything he wrote had a back story and the back story had another back story,, he literally created worlds so I really don't see how setting down and reading the book that literally started it all is boring not to mention anyone in around 120 years has hardly created a story as deep as lotr ,, few like (song of ice and fire /the witcher/Harry potter) achieved his level that's why tolkien won!

Alex Snitzer although i love Harry Potter and j.k rowling she definitely doesn't standout as much as grrm and Andrzej Sapkowski,, I actually like piers but he's too old school for me,, i can hardly remember the last time I checked one of his novels ,, I confidently believe that Andrzej Sapkowski is the shining star between them and the closest to tolkien

That line is why I feel Martin won. Its hypocritical because of how nerdy larping is seen as. Tolkiens work is so much more of a fantasy that his line applies to himself more. I also like the tree branch line, and im into punk as opposed to rock so some of his lines didn't hit me right.

I'm kind've sorry to say, but it wasn't Tolkien that got me into fantasy, it was Terry Brooks. I wasn't really into reading fantasy, or anything at all to be honest, before high school. Then I saw Brooks' _Elf Queen of Shannara_ sitting on the school library's shelf and picked it up because it had Elves in it. Almost two decades later and I have all 14 of his Shannara novels. I need to read Tolkien's LoTR books, though, I've been meaning do that for some time now.

I have the books in storage somewhere, I just need to dig them out. I have the ones that have the movie covers, though, so I really hope they're not just book adaptations of the movie, and are the original books just with movie covers. I really hate it when people take movies that are based on books, then make book adaptations of those movies, then try to convince you that those are the original books when they're not. Tolkien had a very unique writing style, and I want to read what _he_ wrote, not what someone else wrote based off the movies.

I thought that Tolkien won, mainly because out of the two Martin went more for profanities and things like "I have sex, you not", while Tolkiens attacks were more on an intellectual and artistic level.

I have to say Tolkien won hands down. Martin spent most of his first verse praising the depth of Tolkien's world. Also, if you look at the biggest hits on each side, Martin's biggest hit is that fantasy names sound funny while Tolkien's biggest hit was Martin selling less than 50 Shades. The one place Martin was better was his flow in the foot fetish verse.
Tolkien also won due to the Somme part. He was a soldier with balls so he is correct in saying it's hard to take criticism from someone like Martin.

You guys do the best reactions to ERB because you're just about the only ones who know what the hell they're talking about in them.
Best part for me : the writers of the script actually read the Silmarillions. A book of the whole LORT world not just the ''European LOTR wars'' but also some other things, like the elfs going to middle-earth, meeting dwarfs, the elf-dwarf wars. Morgoth/melkor. and my own favourite : An army of Balrogs attacking the gigantic city.
And I reiterate: It isn't really a battle. JRR invented this genre, anyone else (Martin included) is just dining on his leftovers.

One line I thought Martin ended up losing on was his "Conscientiously Object" one, since Tolkien pulled it back with a good crack about how he's the one who's been in a war.
Martin's "I'm rock-'n'-roll" line backfired big-time also.

What i love about Martin is what is predictable is unpredictable. We know he is going to kill major characters but we don't know which ones.

I can't affirm that it's the case, but it feels like ERB is a bit chaotic with what's in each season and the seasons start and end lines. Especially with the old ones, pretty sure they changed something, and the last season. Or I just missed some update

ERB specifically puts classic against modern all the time, contemporaries might be more of an even fight, but not necessarily always as interesting, especially if you personally side with the modern one.

What’s interesting was that Tolkien unlike Martian didn’t write his books with the intention of making money in fact it was Tolkien’s kids who went “hey dad turn that old story you use to tell to us into a book so you could make some money” he wasn’t looking for fame and fortune he had a job he liked, a family he loved there really wasn’t anything else he needed

I just want to say thanks Mika for bringing up that Edgar Allan Poe should of been written against H.P. Lovecraft.
Both of their works have far greater in common since Edgar's literary style is what later helped inspire Lovecrafts style.
King is an phenomenal writer but his style and setting he bases his works are far different from Poe's.
