Nah man, I just stopped caring about comparing myself cause as long you continue to draw you'll grow eventually (as a hobbyist).

Makes total sense! It also applies to professional artists. A lot of people get caught up in comparison and end up drawing a lot less

@@zoelikesfrogs best part is that i can just include my own builds into comics I doodle so even when I'm burning time in Minecraft as a creative outlet it helps my other forms of art

On the whole originality issue, I want to say that recently I saw a list of the artists that Junji Ito said were his biggest inspirations, and it wasn't like he straight ripped them off or anything, but you could absolutely tell what parts of his style came from which artist, and I think thats great from an artists perspective. Its very hard to argue that Junji Ito isn't an absolute master at making the most scary and unsettlings drawing imaginable, and seeing that he very blatantly took such heavy inspiration from these other artists really shows that even on a professional level originality really is second to execution. Getting an idea or concept you like and just running with it and exploring what you like about it is pretty much always better than having a super unique and interesting idea thats half baked and unfinished, because the passion (or lack thereof) comes through whether people realize it or not.
Also the unfortunate thing is sometimes people can be absolutely insufferable online, and wouldn't know the concept of "if you have nothing nice or helpful to say, dont say anything" if it hit them in the face. If people say things that dont help you improve, or critique things that make it very clear that they arent your target audience, you really just gotta roll with the punches and ignore it the best you can. And thats definitely easier said than done.
Anyway sorry for the long comment, very good video, you hit all the nails on the head. Also very fun to listen to while working on a painting, definitely subbing

@@spectrareal oh I definetly have to look up the junji ito thing, that sounds super interesting, and I’m a big fan of his work! If you’re into Fantasy manga, I recommend checking out witch hat atelier. The artist takes a lot of inspiration from well known artists like Alphonse Mucha, and it definetly shows in her work. I was thinking about her a lot when recording this video, as I think her work is a great example of adapting the things that inspire you!
Totally agree with the things about people online, I think a big part of this is just kids online being immature, and then some people never growing out of it. I think the way that I tend to protect myself from that is to find people whose opinion I respect and who I know are qualified to give me advice. I also just think that social media fostered a culture where a lot of people think that the world revolves around them, and that their word is law. I think as long as one is aware of that, these things aren’t able to hurt you as much.
Loved hearing your opinion on this. Thank you for taking the time to watch and discuss. 💖
