Looks great thus far. I built a steel boat in my parent's backyard. It took 4 years of my spare time while I worked full time. The timber fit out and engine instal took the most time. It's great to see you working together on this life changing project. I hope you have the discipline to finish and to take "time out" now and then when you need a well deserved break. All the best to you both.
I built a Roberts 36 way back when I was not much older then you two. They didn't sell kits at that time. Took me 5 years as I worked full time and my wife declined to share the work . She also worked full time plus cooked meals, cleaned, etc. Your video brings back memories. When I had the hull fully welded and the welds ground and polished I went back and took chalk and coated all the welds. On the inside I sprayed varsol on the back sides of the welds and if there was a bad spot the varsol would come through the weld and show on the chalk as a wet spot. An old boiler welder took me that trick. Hope it helps.
This technique is something we now use in industry called Dye Penetrant Inspection or DPI. Supplies can usually be found in a good welding supply store and in that market are normally sold for checking stainless welds from one side only. Three aerosol cans are needed, a degreaser, the dye and a developer, and would only cost about £10 each, worth the small investment for this kind of thing.
Congratulations guys, for having met you, shared dreams and made them. They are a great couple. I wish you success in all your projects, "unity is strength"
My father and I built a 40' steamboat and documented the process a little bit. I'm impressed with your work and can absolutely respect the amount of work involved.
Thanks for the support. Just had a quick look at your videos, I've always loved steam engines, something so raw and powerful about them. Cheers (Duncan)
Where are you building? The 53 is pretty big, we've seen a completed one and one in progress. Thanks for the kind words, would love to hear more about yours.
I am in the north central US - about 800 miles North of Doug. (seeker) I am about as far from salt water as you can get in the US. I will launch from the port of Duluth Minnesota on Lake Superior and the sail out to the east coast. Where are you in the UK? I lived in Northumberland for a year, many years ago. Send me an email and we can talk off line. greenrangeenergy@gmail.com
You guys have made some good progress on this boat. She looks like she will be a great craft when done. IT is nice having all those pre-cut pieces like that, saves a ton of time not having to do all of the cutting and fitting. I hear good things about the Bruce Roberts designs, I will be enjoying watching yours come together.
Great video sequence. I have been building a Bruce Roberts 445 DS in Hampshire UK over the last 5 or 6 years and I am almost ready to launch. Your boat looks very similar, and we are very pleased with the result. Having the steel plasma cut is the way to go - all steel ships are built the same way. Good luck and enjoy the process!
Excellent work. Back in the late 70s my parents built a Bruce Roberts "Spray" that was 50', as it was a registered yacht, and the internet came along, the current owners tracked us down. It's still alive, 40+ years later.
Wow Great Wonderful jop Wonderful couple It's amazing work for both of you hope to see it done and wish for both of you a long healthy life together and forever

All of those years weren’t good but we still weathered the storm. Wheelchairs and all. Ok the old man with hush now and this Texan tips his hat to you both. Outstanding!
Hi Rob, Thanks for the comment and advice!! It has taken all of my (Chloe) patience at times haha and taken a lot of motivation to keep going sometimes but we are getting there and are determined :)
I noticed your passageways through the bulkheads were rather short. Will they always be that way or will you be opening them up later. BTW love the boat.
Awesome. So, im really curious how much it cost: firstly the plans, and the steel. Secondly, did you weld it out with wire? If so, what type and why? Fluxcore, MIG, Dualsheild? Only reason im asking is because ive always been taught tack and root w 6011 and weld out w 7018 stick. It takes longer but makes a stronger weld than wire.
Hey Ryan, we did a video with cost of the kit etc: ua-cam.com/video/ttWDy7GRHjw/v-deo.html Yep Duncan used dual shield fluxcore wire from Bohler Thyssen, it came recommended by a number of other boat builders and is one of the wires on the Lloyd's shipbuilding approved list. Duncan is making a video all about the welding process for the boat so can tell you more than I know (Chloe)!
Ain't nothing better than a steel ship as long as your welds are good. Way less maintenance once painted. Just subbed ya is there a picture of what she will look like done ?
I think I'm going to really like this ! .. One question why a 2nd helm, wouldn't a hard top and a hard dodger make better use of space ?... Not a knock or a I know better thing I'm just wondering ...
We plan on cruising in some of the slightly colder places, so having a helm position inside will make that sort of cruising more comfortable. We were considering the hard dodger approach but settled on having a pilothouse.
Hello Duncan, I also contacted Mr. Bruce, and he also recommended me to build a 388. Because his cutting files are great. The video of your construction process is very helpful to me. The mistakes in your work are also very important. This can prevent such problems from happening for me. I am still in the process of preparing materials. I have a A 200A second protection welding machine, I am curious what kind of welding machine you use, can you tell me about it. This is a project that basically has no courage to start. I admire you very much. Google translate sorry
hi, love your video and thinking of buying the bruce roberts plan. Do boatyards let you build your boat for a fee? Do you know of a boatyard or any place that you can recommend? Thanks, I look forward to seeing more videos of your progress! :)
Hi Pedro :) Thanks! Where are you based/ where would you like to build? We were lucky enough to build ours in a friends farm building and have only recently moved to a boatyard (Iron Wharf boat yard, Kent) We are paying about £25 per week to keep our boat at the yard we're at and I think that's pretty cheap as boatyards go! Chloe

Very nice. Do you plan on doing your own sandblasting and priming, or are you going to hire that done?
We're not sure just yet, but leaning towards getting someone in for sandblasting. We'll probably do the painting etc.
Get a professional to sandblast
You have a steep enough learning curve to climb and if done properly, you will not have to sandblast again
@@philipritson8821 Good advice, but there's so many idiots in trades these days. When you want something done right... do it yourself

All I can say is cool!😎😎
Wow fast worker's keep up the good work . All up cost estimate is it 50 k or 100k including rental of building sheds
Thanks for the comment. Probably closer to 100k in the end. We'll post a video once we get there. You might have to wait a while for that one tho.
Great work
Great job !!
If possible to work with as. I drawing in rhino 3d, and i make calculation of propeller boat. And stability to.
hi, love your video and thinking of buying the bruce roberts plan.
