American here, and this steak sandwich isn't like any I've had. As you say, you can make a better one pretty easily yourself, with ciabatta and more chewable steak. Some Au Jus sauce (comes in a packet over here) would be nice to dip the sandwich in. Thanks for another enjoyable video!
Looked like eye of round, or topside steak, Gaz. So it'll always be chewy, even when properly cooked as you did. I use skirt or flank for beef sarnies and Philly steak. Cooked like that they're as tender and tasty as rib eye, but a fraction of't price👍
Hi Gareth..to make use of cheaper cuts of meat..marinade it ..much like Chinese cooking..sprinkle with a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and a teaspoon of cornflour before cooking..leave a few hours..or overnight..it tenderises the cheapest meat..pork is delicious done this way..with additional Chinese seasoning whilst cooking..😋👍
Another good review. I agree with you that you could make it cheaper and better yourself. Get one of those Aldi steaks you have reviewed cut it into strips, a couple of ciabattas, and a dash of mayo, and I am sure it would be nicer. I tend to avoid any ready meals with beef/ steak in them because I generally find the quality isn't that good and is often quite chewy. Given the choice, I would always go for a chicken meal. Still, you have got to try these things I suppose you never know one day you might strike gold 😊 . Thanks for the review.
I work at Tesco as a customer delivery driver so this is another item I will skip lol. I spot things in the customers delivery and ask them if they are any good and then buy and try them myself lol. Another great review Gareth thank you ❤
Thanks for that review, I won't be wasting my money on that. I would have poured the gravy in the pan you cooked the steak in, might have given it a better flavour. No way would I spoil a nice steak with anything honey related. The sweet gravy was probably down to the concentrated red currant juice. Fantastic, honest review as usual.
Hi Gareth. Thanks for another brill review. If thats a taste of America then I'm glad I live here. Get yourself down to the local butchers for some lean steak then to the local bakers for fresh baps. Better quality and save money. Keep up the spot on work. Best wishes from Scotland.
As somebody who lived in both America and Canada for most of my life.. I can and will confirm that alot of American food is sweetened up by the sauces they use..not so much Canada where the food is more "natural" ...if your looking for something Canadian..I can suggest either of these.... Poutine, it is chips, or fries in Canada, with cheese and gravy ( in Canada they use cheese curds). Or maybe look online for shops here in the U.K. that sell Canadian and American food. If you can find them, get yourself some Caribou Burgers, you'll never eat another normal burger again... And remember to be conscious of whether the animals are naturally sourced... Miigwech.
Hi Gareth great vid as always, i noticed you still have the old ninja air frier same as mine and remember you got another one similar to a microwave in looks, just wondering which is your preference. I quite fancy the new front loader from ninja which has two compartments but you can take a divider out and make one large compartment.
As soon as I saw that distinctive pattern on/ of the cooked steak, yeah, sought of triggered memories from my cheffing days, those small bashed steaks that were included with the mixed grills, difficult not to overcook, and typically never tender.
Those are thin cut medallion steaks, you can run a Challenger tank over them and they will never get tender. Best thing for them is to cut into cubes and cook them in a stew for at least 2.5 hours.
Another great review, nice one mate. We were watching your two battered fish for a pound review the other day, and the mrs says, "Why doesn't he do one in the air fryer and one in the oven?" and I thought, you know what, that's a good question. When you have two of something to review, it might be a good idea to cook them differently to see which way is best. Anyway all the best, keep em coming 👍
Tbh I thought the same as you. £6 . But, we buy a packet of roast beef offcuts from BnM , a packet of Paninis from Aldi . We caramelise the onions and make a nice thick gravy . Warm the Paninis and the beef in Caramelised onion gravy tastes delicious . Then you can feed the family from one packet of roast beef and the Paninis.
Hi Gareth thanks for honest review again , agree with you best to buy separately easy to do your own better version of mayo and gravy. Hugs from Shropshire ❤
The rolls don't have the open texture I'd expect for ciabatta. Honey mayo just sounds weird. You'd be better off getting fillet tails from your butcher (like you'd use for stir-fry or stroganoff) and make your own sauce.
I knew that steak was going to be chewy when you put them in the pan and they curled up at the ends.. because a good 🥩 sits virtually flat..but I always remember my mom doing a piece of dip basically stinking a slice of bread in the pan where the beef had been cooked while the beef was resting 😋
Those look amazing Gareth but like you said a couple of ciabatta rolls and a couple of minute steaks with the gravy and sauce of your choice would be better, another good video big pal
The Tesco sandwich is nothing like an American steak sandwich. We don't use gravy or mayo on our steak sandwiches here in Philadelphia. And our sandwich steaks are much thinner and usually chopped finely on the grill or in the pan. For toppings we use cheese and fried onions and maybe ketchup. The Tesco sandwich didn't look bad but it wasn't an American-style steak sandwich by any means.

The addition of the caramelised sugar syrup will have given the gravy its dark colour and over-sweetness. The 'au jus' used to dip American hot roast beef sandwiches is much thinner and lighter, and the whole sandwich is quickly dipped into the 'jus' with tongs, then served.
