Another point about this scene- River said in Series 4 that 'Everybody knows that everybody dies, and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I think all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark if he ever accepts it.' This is the Doctor accepting his end, and there's no stars. The skies turned dark.
Cool theory however I would like to add River's original point was darker than that. It's not if the Doctor was to accept his own end. He is prepared for that, many times over. He even says it to the Master and Missy. I'll keep doing it until it kills me. Where I stand, is where I fall. Because that's the real point about the Doctor. At his best he saves people, by never giving in and never giving up. He might not save many and maybe not for long. But he does it because it's the right thing to do. Just kind. And what River means is the day he stops giving a damn to do that is when the skies go dark. Just the same as if we, who love the Doctor, are to ignore his lesson and stop caring about the world, freedom and others, the world will go dark. Spread kindness. Spread light.
The Doctor wants his last vision to be the stars that he loves so much, and the last thing he sees before he dies is the fire of a war, what he has always hated. I cried like a baby when I understood the meaning of this scene.
And of course, the bitter irony of this is that stars *are* fire, bigger balls of fire than any war could produce. But go tell that old sop that - and that's why we love him, too.

Its such a dark story by Doctor who standards! But I'm so glad we got this as Peter Capaldi's last story before his regeneration. It fits his Doctor soo well. And the fact that the Doctor isn't able to pull any Deus ex Machina solution makes it all the more impactful, because its such a powerful story and it has major consequences for everyone involved in it. Every person in this story has their lives massively altered. The Doctor effectively dies, Missy dies, the Master dies, Nardole gets left behind and Bill is converted into a cyberman..which is even worse than death. That's why I find Heather's resurrection of Bill lovely, because Bill didnt deserve to die in that horrific way..and even though its a bit out of nowhere..it leaves you feeling a bit hopeful.. that not all was lost. Plus it wasn't the Doctor who saved her..it was her own attachment to Heather that saved her. It's such a powerful story...and I love it. It's such a shame that people say that Capaldi era was bad when there are such gem episodes all over his series. The 10th season especially was Capaldi's shining season. It started with season 9..and peaked with heaven sent..and then in my opinion stayed at that high level in season 10.

I agree. It really would have been the perfect end to a 2000 year old hero. He comes to accept his fate without seeing the stars, but dies knowing that he saved some people before dying. Before series 11, remember when the doctor was really upset about everyone that had died for or because of him? Now whenever anyone dies, she’s like “Oh never mind! I’m still with my fAm!”
@@pinkperfectpeach7544 I haven't watched any of the new series but know the things they have done/written.. it's horrible to think what's happened to our beloved TV Show.... the thing is even if the Doctor changes back to a man, they'll be references to the female incarnations as they have cemented their place as one of the regenerations of the Doctor, if only gender change wasn't introduced then I'd still be watching but Twice Upon A Time had everything and it looked like the SERIES finale than a SEASON. The first incarnation meets ultimately the last incarnation, had mentions of the Doctor's previous faces and being the Doctor of War. I'll happily rewatch TWAU every Christmas, if you think about it, IT is the finale to Doctor Who. Moffat left, Capaldi left, Gomez left, Mackie left, Lucas left, Gold (composer) left, probably the last time we'll see the First Doctor as well!
@@ThyFacelessOne I understand what you mean, I just didn't know most people disagreed with it. Like you, I think they are the finest pieces of music this show has ever had. Sorry if my phrasing made it unclear :)
While seasons 2 and 3 hold a special place for me in terms of soundtrack as they came along at an important part of my life I’ll always miss, I’ve gotta agree. Murray Gold was on fire and has been dearly missed from the show. Can’t wait to have him back.
In a very short stint Bill won over me and probably has many of us. The ending of twice upon a time didn’t make me cry but the ending of this episode tore me up bad because how genuine her character was. Moffat’s best season finale episode no doubt was his last.
I know, right? I was blown away by this finale. Imo 12 has some of the highest (Heaven Sent, World Enough and Time/Doctor Falls) and lowest (Hell Bent >:|, Sleep No More) points in the shows history and I wouldn't have it any other way
@@t.m.carter4171 It's a sign they were willing to go places with the incarnation, they ran the risk of bad episodes for the sake of these knockout ones.
What I noticed was when they showed the doctor remembering all his past companions and the "Doctors" he remembers Clara. Idk I just started jumping around screaming "HE REMEMBERS HER!"
You know... I hadn't even thought of that until you mentioned it. Good catch! I was busy being impressed that what brought the Doctor out of it was remembering his friend Missy...
I won't lie I never realised this. It would've actually solved the weird thing they did with the glass people restoring his memories - i would've preferred it if this was the greatest catalyst to him remembering, the regeneration "healing" a neuron path that was damaged by the erasing device, but never destroyed.
The novelization gave him a happy ending, via the Testimony. 792 years of life (IIRC) before his death, protecting that village on the floor he was stuck on so well that eventually all they needed to worry about were cybermats, happily married multiple times over, the whole nine yards. In fact, the whole thing is reminiscent (and probably deliberately modeled after) Eleven protecting that one village from Daleks, in his finale episode.
@@AssassinIsAfk ok that’s true that The Timeless Children sucked but for me the rest was okay, season 11 was kinda boring and the companions are uninteresting but I didn’t see something bad other than that.
Murray Gold was on top form this episode! I expected this episode to have good music, as let's be honest, finales are usually where the best music is found in Doctor Who!!!!
Samuel Darlington , the music of Breaking the Wall, of Heaven Sent, is used again in this episode, when tje Doctor is fatally shot... This was the climax of this awesome OST...
Anyone else getting those "Song of Freedom" vibes? The music that plays when the tenth doctor and all new Who companions put the earth back into its proper place. I love the nod to it, excellently crafted music.
Not ashamed to admit Bill's exit made me cry. It wasn't even sad but it was so beautiful. Before this episode I really didn't want Moffat to bing Bill back like Clara but this exit was perfect
Perhaps Missy gave the master the laser screwdriver...where did he get it from? Remember, this is set after the End of Time and it was destroyed in Last of the Time Lords. Perhaps Missy remembered that would happened and designed it to give her another set of regenerations...???
The way I see it, if the next showrunner wanted Missy or the Master in general, Moff wouldn't have straight up killed her. I'd rather we never see them again.
Series 10 is my all-time favourite Doctor Who season for now. Favourite Doctor, favourite Master, favourite TARDIS, favourite tracks, second favourite companion. I love the atmosphere of it, how Capaldi plays the Doctor, and that's not even nostalgia because Matt Smith was my first Doctor. But this final two-parter? It was genius. A true masterpiece, as good as, if not better, Heaven Sent. The Doctor Falls is my second "most cried on" episode. Missy's death, the Doctor being almost defeated and almost dying, without even seeing his beloved stars, the tragic fate of the ship's inhabitants... This is a dark story, but a beautiful one. I think this episode can easily be the final episode of the show if it wanted to. My top "most cried on" episode is Twice Upon a Time, because of that final scene before the regeneration, and the regeneration itself. Matt Smith was my first Doctor, but Peter Capaldi was my Doctor. The way he dressed, his speeches, his overall "cold behaviour hiding a kind and wonderful person" personnality... It is the Doctor I relate the most with. Seeing him finally understanding how good of a man he is before leaving was a truly bittersweet and heartwrenching moment. Thanks to the Twelth Doctor, I realised how important it is to be kind. Not the best, not the strongest or the smartest. Being kind, and doing the best we can. Maybe everything would be a lot better if everyone listened to the Twelth Doctor.
@@Hellohiq10 hell yeah. Best series arc, best CyberStory, best companion since Donna, my favorite episode, consistent quality, the best Doctor, just perfecto
Honestly I feel the same way. I started out with 9, then 10, 11 and 12,. I liked 10 for awhile but in retrospect I dont like his arrogance and vanity and 11 grew on me with his stories yet I liked him in his last season when he became just a little darker. but 12 was interesting, I watched his seasons and I like him as The Doctor. 12 felt real. despite hiding his kindness, the gravitas of his actions showed he cared, his speeches were beautiful and carrued so much I can’t even describe. 12 accpeted his imperfections and identity as the Madman in Death in Heaven, lost his friend in Hellbent because he cant save everyone. Then, after a night in Darillium, 12 became a teacher, he helped to try and improve someone that I dont think his other regenerations could reach; His oldest friend Missy. 12 was My Doctor. I loved his clothing of a formal man with a casual somewhat eccentric look as a madman/genius would have. His sonic shades and screwdriver were my favorites of the Sonics, his Tardis interior was refined and companions, Clara, (kinda Danny), Bill and Nardole showed his growth, Clara taught him how to be kind again and taught others because of that even if 12 forgot her. This Doctor developed into that by the end of series 10 and nearly died in a losing battle just trying to buy the people on the ship a little more time, even if there was no hope. Twice upon a time was 12’s epilogue and words of advice to the following regeneration of doctors. Words of advice as they carry on with the memories of their predecessors… “Live hard, run fast and Be kind…”
I loved the fact that Bill and Heather got to go adventuring. Even if Bill decides to return to being human, it is nice to think that they got to explore time and space for a good, long time.
I can't wait until the series 10 soundtrack comes out. This, the new breaking the wall variation and the song that plays when the doctor gets his vision back are amazing. Also I think World Enough/Doctor Falls were two of Murray gold's best episodes as far as music goes.
This track just screams 'Nothing lasts forever.' There's always a point, however heroic your last stand may be, when there's nothing but memories. Everything ends.
So sad that bill left !!! There was so much more she could've done ! For example there was the photo of her mother taken by the doctor !!! We never will get to see that storyline ! Pearl mackie played an excellent companion and it's a real shame she didn't get more time on the show !
To date, still my favourite episode of Doctor Who. It was absolutely flawless: the music; the story; the ending. Perfect. I thought the Cyber Men were finally given an episode to be remembered.
I cried like a little child. I'm really sad that Bill is leaving already, I really love her and she has so much potential. But her ending was really beautiful. I was waiting for Heather to return through the whole season and I was pleasantly surprised when she actually came back.
You were waiting? Damn that must have been AWESOME to see her then :) I totally forgot about her, and her abilities. When Bill said, "I've been through alot" (or something) I thought she was going to say "how did you find me?" But then I went back and watched The Pilot and realized Heather is like a wet Tardis and it made it all OK. But if you had this in your head already.... yeah that must have been so cool to see :)
Oswin Pond well, the ending we'll see on Twice upon a time, as in the scene Bill said she'd go with Heather but will be back as human in time for the tea! I can't wait to see her once more again
Anybody else notice a bit of "Goodbye Pond" in here? Starts around 3:20 and lasts until 3:40. Very reminiscent of The Pond's final episode. Specifically the Epilogue scene where The Doctor is reading the last page.
This for me is one of the best soundtracks created for the show and I am very disappointed that it never got released because it was amazing. This finale was brilliant (are the Cybermen upgrading way too fast and defeated way too easily yes does it bring the episode crashing down like a pile of flames… no !)This episode is one of the most emotional episodes in Doctor who Whostery (Doctor who history) Journeys End is a very close second to this episode I hadn’t felt this emotional in Doctor who since Journeys end and boy does The Doctor Falls bring it’s A game for the feels bringing us moments with heart filled moments and heart breaking the next, I love how gradually the Doctors ambition, pride, joy and courage begins shrivel away by the end of the episode. The doctor by the end of the episode becomes more desperate and eventually he just wants to die in peace ☮️ so he fights off the regeneration, until in Twice upon a time he knows he must regenerate because the universe isn’t a safe place to be without the doctor in it. Xx
You really feel for the Doctor in this music...he really is, for the first time in a long time, alone. River has long since died in the library, with even her "ghost" from the database having faded, Nardole and Bill are dead, Clara will have gone back to trap street, and even Missy is gone. This regeneration of the Doctor is, in a way, the saddest, despite the brilliant character portrayed for the most part, as someone so strong.
River’s “ghost” hasn’t faded. She was saved. Saved means she isn’t gone or disappearing. It just means there’s no proper physical form of her. Just data.
I'm excited to see the first doctor and Christmas of course, but with this episode, if they wanted to end it with this, I would be fine with it, it felt so final, farewells a plenty did so sombre, I had much the same feeling back in End of Time, like a proper finale, Time of The Doctor didn't feel final, this very much felt like the end
TIMELORD327 I agree I also think it's work best if you're really emotionally invested in the characters and if it doesn't feel like oh another day after this one, next adventure *VWORP VWORP*
To be honest, if they had decided that they wanted to end the show completely (which I sincerely hope never happens), cutting out the scene with the first doctor and his resistance to regeneration should have made it perfect for that.
You know what would have made the scene where Heather appeared feel less like a quick fix to a situation? They should have had Heather appear at the end of several episodes in Series 10 looking for Bill; kind of like how we saw a crack in time in the end of every episode of Series 5 almost. That way when she finally finds Bill in The Doctor Falls, it wouldn’t feel like a quick fix
I am going to miss Peter Capaldi so much . . . I did not like him at the beginning . . . But now . . . What a doctor he is . . . I don't want him to go . . . Secretly I am hoping that he will stay for a little longer . . . It makes me so sad . . .
How to know when you love a certain piece of music: You try to transcribe it by ear. Surprisingly, it's not that hard because the instrumentation is so simple yet so beautiful.
This was without a doubt MY favourite episode to-date. the soundtrack to this is just very beautiful, and it takes a lot to make me cryin a doctor who episode I have to say. Just watching that scene with Cyberman Bill looking down at him, and being upset that she failed him- but she didn't
Towards the end (5 mins onwards) it reminds me of Astrid's theme. So beautiful. If Silva Screen don't sort out these soundtracks I will personally visit their offices and protest.
This scene is beautiful, but this piece of music, which seems heavily inspired by Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im spiegel, hit me hardest twice in about 30 seconds when it starts just as Nardole tells the Doctor, "Don't die, because if you do, I think the whole universe might just go cold," and when the Doctor tells Bill and Nardole, "Thank you. Thank you both, for everything that you were to me." That bit gets me every time.
Wonderful music, wonderful scenes, wonderful episode. Absolutely agree that the regeneration would have been perfect at the end of this. But still, never mind that, just such a surprisingly emotional and brilliant finale.
the doctor, in these episodes... his companion is turned into a cyberman, he is betrayed by his friend, he dies in the fires of war, without seeing the stars one last time... just... :'''''''((((((... i cried

Massively unpopular opinion commencing now:
I believe from the Doctor Who Revived Series the Peter Capaldi era has the best soundtracks.
Unpopular? I always thought the same. It kept on growing both in scale and in depth.
@@mladenr3464 I stated that most people do not think Peter Capaldi OSTs are the best, but I think they are.
@@ThyFacelessOne I understand what you mean, I just didn't know most people disagreed with it. Like you, I think they are the finest pieces of music this show has ever had. Sorry if my phrasing made it unclear :)
Indeed.
@@spacey_432 I agree, and I am so glad risks were taken with him because when they paid off they paid off.

There's no way you said Hell Bent was bad.

What I noticed was when they showed the doctor remembering all his past companions and the "Doctors" he remembers Clara. Idk I just started jumping around screaming "HE REMEMBERS HER!"
wait...... YEAHH OMG AHHAHA
You know... I hadn't even thought of that until you mentioned it. Good catch!
I was busy being impressed that what brought the Doctor out of it was remembering his friend Missy...
Same
I won't lie I never realised this. It would've actually solved the weird thing they did with the glass people restoring his memories - i would've preferred it if this was the greatest catalyst to him remembering, the regeneration "healing" a neuron path that was damaged by the erasing device, but never destroyed.
Can we just talk about how Nardole is trapped on that spaceship forever just waiting to get killed by the cybermen?
One Order rip in the chat
The novelization gave him a happy ending, via the Testimony. 792 years of life (IIRC) before his death, protecting that village on the floor he was stuck on so well that eventually all they needed to worry about were cybermats, happily married multiple times over, the whole nine yards. In fact, the whole thing is reminiscent (and probably deliberately modeled after) Eleven protecting that one village from Daleks, in his finale episode.
The Cybermen will run out of humans eventually and most are dead from the explosion anyway
@@Landis963 Where is the novelization :)

Murray Gold was on top form this episode! I expected this episode to have good music, as let's be honest, finales are usually where the best music is found in Doctor Who!!!!
Samuel Darlington what about heaven sent
Samuel Darlington , the music of Breaking the Wall, of Heaven Sent, is used again in this episode, when tje Doctor is fatally shot... This was the climax of this awesome OST...
Bob Chillison Heaven Sent is part of the Series 9 finale. I meant one, two, or three part finales. Each part counts.
Anyone else getting those "Song of Freedom" vibes? The music that plays when the tenth doctor and all new Who companions put the earth back into its proper place. I love the nod to it, excellently crafted music.
A piano version of the song here would have the scene perfect.
Not ashamed to admit Bill's exit made me cry. It wasn't even sad but it was so beautiful. Before this episode I really didn't want Moffat to bing Bill back like Clara but this exit was perfect
Hamman768 yeh I think her reaction really helped to humanise the doctors death
You know she's coming back for the Christmas special right?
Colin Antink haha yup I've heard of that too. If true then it will only be a cameo I'd expect
She was in Twice Upon a Time. Honesly, it was a good way to bring her back.
I’d love to know what you thought of it all these years later now you’ve watched it
The episode itself made me cry so much
It was so sad
Bill and nardole have left the series
And missy is dead
i doubt missy is dead, she would have remembered she shot herself in the back and prepared for it
The master / Mistress will be back that is for sure. But maybe with a new face?
Perhaps Missy gave the master the laser screwdriver...where did he get it from?
Remember, this is set after the End of Time and it was destroyed in Last of the Time Lords.
Perhaps Missy remembered that would happened and designed it to give her another set of regenerations...???
Papa Hale maybe like how she remember a scary lady pushed herself against a wall and told him to always carry a spare tardis materializer
Series 10 is my second, only beaten by series 4, but this is the best series finale by miles.
Now it's my favorite
@@caleb7551 nice! It’s mine too!
Words of advice as they carry on with the memories of their predecessors…
“Live hard, run fast and Be kind…”
I swear this scene makes me cry every single time. It's even sadder than "I don't want to go".
That is the saddest part.
@@Florence9a9machine
I loved the fact that Bill and Heather got to go adventuring. Even if Bill decides to return to being human, it is nice to think that they got to explore time and space for a good, long time.
I can't wait until the series 10 soundtrack comes out. This, the new breaking the wall variation and the song that plays when the doctor gets his vision back are amazing. Also I think World Enough/Doctor Falls were two of Murray gold's best episodes as far as music goes.
Omg please can we get the soundtrack already? 😢
Still waiting....
I don’t think I’ve cried this hard at the end of a Doctor’s time before it was time for him to regenerate.
I never used to cry at series finales but then this episode aired and it utterly broke me
I still cry everytime I just think about this scene. No other Doctor’s death has me like this.
Crying.....i am sobbing....What a fantastic series...what a brilliant actor. Peter Capaldi #mydoctoris12.
For me, the story of the Doctor, the madman in a box........so old, so tired and so kind, ended right there on that battlefield 😞
This track just screams 'Nothing lasts forever.'
There's always a point, however heroic your last stand may be, when there's nothing but memories. Everything ends.
Indeed.
Memories become stories when we forget them. Maybe some of them become songs.

So sad that bill left !!! There was so much more she could've done ! For example there was the photo of her mother taken by the doctor !!! We never will get to see that storyline ! Pearl mackie played an excellent companion and it's a real shame she didn't get more time on the show !
This is what the latest series really lacked. A solemn dignifying speech by a great actor with a beautiful melodic composed track.
I called it before , on your world enough and time vid , murray gold was just waiting for the finale
Yep, I was hoping too !
Series 10 is my favorite series of Doctor who and it’s KILLING ME that they haven’t released the soundtrack
I just kept thinking about her, because Doctor said that maybe they could see her again.
@@splatbubble Okay, the phrase "a wet TARDIS" made me laugh.

It was Bills face that set me off crying in scene, she was so distraught :'( Pearl was Brill in the finale, such a brill actress.
Absolutely. That raw grief on her face. Just heartbreaking.
This for me is one of the best soundtracks created for the show and I am very disappointed that it never got released because it was amazing.
This finale was brilliant (are the Cybermen upgrading way too fast and defeated way too easily yes does it bring the episode crashing down like a pile of flames… no !)This episode is one of the most emotional episodes in Doctor who Whostery (Doctor who history)
Journeys End is a very close second to this episode I hadn’t felt this emotional in Doctor who since Journeys end and boy does The Doctor Falls bring it’s A game for the feels bringing us moments with heart filled moments and heart breaking the next, I love how gradually the Doctors ambition, pride, joy and courage begins shrivel away by the end of the episode.
The doctor by the end of the episode becomes more desperate and eventually he just wants to die in peace ☮️ so he fights off the regeneration, until in Twice upon a time he knows he must regenerate because the universe isn’t a safe place to be without the doctor in it. Xx
When the strings break through at 5:25, carried by the brass to their crescendo at 5:30

2:23 NO FREAKIN WAY! I loved how the season came full circle! One of the best finales.
"My destiny lies in the stars"
-The Doctor, the original, you might say.

This song pushed me off the edge in the scene... I was struggling not to cry already, but then this played... it still makes me want to cry.
I love 13. I love every bit of the last two seasons (except maybe for that Timeless Child thing). But I still grieve for 12.
Just data.
The paternoster gang were a one off. They didn’t have a special connection to this doctor like everyone else.
You’re referring to “Manhattan” . If you’re going to insult me please look up the location you’re talking about
Then don’t. Simple as that

That's the most beautiful and sadiest music on Doctor who! I love that!!!!
It's a big universe, but maybe one day we'll find her...
*It's a big universe, but i hope i see you again.*
As Clara's tear saves in "The Snowmen", so does Bill's here.
This episode is one of the best episodes ever! It’s like Moffat wants to go out in a boom!
I actually would have been fine if this was how 12 went. He wen't out with a bang, I expect nothing less from him
I'm excited to see the first doctor and Christmas of course, but with this episode, if they wanted to end it with this, I would be fine with it, it felt so final, farewells a plenty did so sombre, I had much the same feeling back in End of Time, like a proper finale, Time of The Doctor didn't feel final, this very much felt like the end
BarneyStudioz I have the exact feeling for Parting of the Ways
TIMELORD327 exactly that was a great finale that concluded a series arc and felt final
BarneyStudioz It's the episodes that feel final, without being downtrodden and deppressing about it that work the best
Best finale since Parting of the Ways.
I think it's time for the "Murray Gold, release the series 10 soundtrack" challenge
I am going to miss Peter Capaldi so much . . . I did not like him at the beginning . . . But now . . . What a doctor he is . . . I don't want him to go . . . Secretly I am hoping that he will stay for a little longer . . . It makes me so sad . . .
I think this episode was exactly how doctor who should have ended...
Man I really miss Murray Gold's score, it added so much emotional punch to the show which is totally missing now.
How to know when you love a certain piece of music: You try to transcribe it by ear. Surprisingly, it's not that hard because the instrumentation is so simple yet so beautiful.
*listens randomly one day for the throwbacks*
*everything comes back and immediately starts crying*
I was trying so hard not to cry here, because I felt embarassed about it. But if I was alone, I would have been fucking bawling my eyes out.
This was without a doubt MY favourite episode to-date. the soundtrack to this is just very beautiful, and it takes a lot to make me cryin a doctor who episode I have to say. Just watching that scene with Cyberman Bill looking down at him, and being upset that she
failed him- but she didn't
this music made me sad...but it's beautiful. murray gold is brilliant
I've never cried so much in my entire life than on this music.
Towards the end (5 mins onwards) it reminds me of Astrid's theme. So beautiful. If Silva Screen don't sort out these soundtracks I will personally visit their offices and protest.
Without Murray gold, doctor who isn't the same series... 😢
6:05 is the most beautiful melody, really hits the emotion.
I cryed so much after that episode
This tune and Clara's song move me in ways...
Also,10's song, when the Ood sing him to his rest!
