I feel like I'm learning in a sorta unique way, a mix of duolingo, youtube videos, asking people on stack exchange, using a select few apps to help learn kanji, and watching children's shows that are for learning to stay as close to real Japanese while watching shows as I can. When I'm talking on stack exchange though it sorta feels like people think I'm learning "the wrong way". I think it's working for me, I am trying to correct myself before making the mistakes or at least learn the info so that when I do, I understand why it's not correct, and can easier correct myself in the future. I keep getting people saying "You're learning nothing but words like that, grammar doesn't make sense if you are jumping around, you will never know what's right." It gets a bit discouraging

I'm glad you mentioned the na-adjectives and kanji, while i-adjectives are so because they are a kanji with hiragana attached. None of it was explained in Genki, so I'm glad you mentioned it for people who want to know what is and isn't a i-adj.

I used to attend online class and we're too many that the focus is more on "how fast someone can get it" rather than "making everyone understand it."
I learned English for many years and IMO, the japanese basic language is squeezed in N5 package which is why the "classroom pace" is not for me.
It's thanks to videos like these which I can pause for while to understand everything in Genki book.

You got a good chuckle out of me at about 19:52 when you said the hot summer is coming, and that it reminded you of Game of Thrones. My N5-level brain quickly tried to come up with the words for "cold" and "winter". You said 寒い冬 right as I managed to think the words, so it was funny hearing you say it in the video as I was saying it in my mind.

To anyone doing Genki (3rd edition) exercises, on page 143 in V-A point 5 exercise you're asked to make ましょう sentence out of 出かける. 出かける is it's own word, not でか mashed onto ける, So it's not -eru exception but ichidan instead. I just spent 30 minutes scratching my head why Genki cut out り from my -eru exception conjugation before I made this realization...

I know I'm 3 years late on this, but, I think there's a grammar point you might want to know about in order to explain na- and i adjectives much better. In particular, remember how to said "na" is kinda like a particle? It isn't "kinda" like a particle; it ACTUALLY IS is a particle.
"Na" adjectives are not proper adjectives. They "adjectival nouns." That is, they're nouns that are turned into adjectives by adding the "na" sound to the end.
It's the equivalent off adding "-y" to an english noun in order to make it an adjective. "Spine -> Spiny -> Spiny Tree. Sun -> Sunny -> Sunny Day. Water -> Watery -> Watery grave." It's the exact same idea.
Thus, the reason why "na" adjectives have weird conjugations is because you're conjugating the "na," which is a distinct particle, as opposed to the noun itself. Similarly, the reason why some "i" adjectives require "na" is because they're actually used as nouns.
While it's a bit late for this video, explaining this might be a good idea if you discuss "na" adjectives in future videos.

I truly love the way Japanese takes in English words. Call me racist if you want, but it's HILARIOUS and so endearing.
    "Hahm - bah - gah"
    "Bi - gu - ma - cu"
    "Nu - zi - ra - n - do"
    "Bi - ru"
I always wonder how French people felt when Americans bastardize words like "croissant", "baguette", "déjà vu", etc
I always thought it would feel insulting but it's actually fascinating and highly entertaining.

If you think about it, "a" is just a counter for singular at the end of a word let's you know there is more than one thing. We say couple, few, many, plenty, lots, tons ontop of saying sheets, slabs, bushels, bunches, flocks, etc. There are too many to count. It must be hard trying to sound natural in English with so many things like that and so many speakers completely unaware of why they use the language they do

    • @ToKiniAndy

Just drilling them honestly. Fortunately, they are always the same regardless of the i adjective, so when you get comfortable conjugating one i adj, you should be able to conjugate all of them.
Also, focus on just one at a time. For example, the negative: たのしくない
い turns into く and you add ない

Thank you for providing us with these videos. I have a question about making suggestions. How would you describe the difference between
レストランに ( 行きましょうか or 行きませんか ) ? Is there a difference in tone with these two ways of asking someone to go to a restaurant?

      You're welcome!
行きましょう is more like (shall we go?). It's much more casual and more of an actual question than invitation. 行きませんか is a very polite invitation and what you'll want to use when inviting someone above you in rank or age, or whom you've just met. ☺️

Hey Andy, I've got a question. When you cut the. い of off adjectives like たのしい and it turns into たのし___ do you ignore the い sound at the end of し and pronounce it like "SH", or can you just ignore the long vowel sound at the end and make し (SHI) shorter than しい (SHII)
I'd really appreciate it if you helped me with this mind boggling thing, thanks :)

13:35 Because Japanese is an indirect language, you will find that from the direct meaning you hear, you should then infer the true, indirect meaning.
In the case of 昨日は暇でした。 暇 is "free time". "As for yesterday, was free time." is the direct meaning, but what should be inferred from the direct meaning is the indirect meaning: "As for yesterday, was not busy."
You should think of Japanese, from the English point-of-view, in this sense rather than trying to link the direct or indirect meaning to the translation.
Use your mind to understand what is really happening in the language spoken and written, and the language will begin to make sense at the basic level throughout your studies.
The same is true in any language.
    1) What is said?
    2) What is heard?
    3) What is inferred?
    4) What is understood?
    5) What is the response?

I'm having a hard time following the counter part. Please correct me if I'm wrong. So if I know which counter I particularly ordered, I will use ~まい?
But if I don't know where or like I'm talking to a waiter, that's when I use ふたつ and so on? not sure if I word it right but basically I'm confused on which point I specifically use them.

    • @matush2910
      @matush2910 Рік тому

i think ふたつ is a counter for anything (besides people) and まい is just for thin object like paper... i believe ふたつ can also be used for paper but まい is more fitting
