Just a reminder that your videos are still saving the lifes of Japanese learners 3 years later. ;) Thank you so much for all the work you put into these videos!
so underrated
Thank you!
IKR
for real!!!
Using these stream vods to freshen up my grammar in time for an exam next month and these are concise yet detailed enough to cover everything important, very useful!
Your videos are fantastic. It makes the book much more understandable.
I like the short version without the chat.
It must be a lot of work to edit them. Thank you for your time and effort.
With the dialogs, it's great having the slower speed speaking followed by normal speed.
Also, colour coding the different parts of the dialog sentences makes them much easier to follow.
Changing the topic slightly. Adding spaces between words would be my suggestion for an introduction to Japanese book, like Genki 1. It would make the Japanese sentences much easier to start reading initially. By the time someone gets to the next book, the spaces wouldn't be necessary.
I'm happy to hear that you are finding them useful!
I agree that spaces would be a good idea for beginner books!
Andy, I’m disappointed. That Te-form song was the perfect chance to bust out some slick Andy-approved dance moves... 😂
Another great lesson 👍
Hahaha Maybe next time!
Thank you for watching! =)
I'm self studying for N5 next month and I was stressing so much with how much I still had left to study by myself until I found your channel, thank you so much for this :)
That Te form song is actually really helpful - as a “midlife” learner, I find songs to be a tremendous mechanism to ensure the information sticks...
I'm happy to hear that you found it helpful! I actually ended up recording my own version after this as well! haha
*shakes fist at る*
This series should come with the genki book lol! I find it hard to focus just by reading from the book, hearing/watching someone explain it helps sooo much, thank you!
I'm glad to hear that they are helping!
I laughed out loud when you played the conjugation song. My year one teacher played it, along with a Christmas version. It still gets stuck in my head when I try to remember the conjugation... 🤣
What a great use for vocaloid haha.
Amazing lesson. Im working through the genki 1 atm and this is super helpful.
Thanks.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I hope the lessons continue to help! ☺️
How's it going?
To clarify, Genki presents mottekuru and tsuretekuru as irregular, because kuru itself is an irregular verb. It makes sense to categorize these complex verb as irregular also, since they end with the expected irregular te-form conjugation of kuru (kite and not kute or kutte). The same holds for "to study": noun (study) + suru = to study. Since suru itself is an irregular verb, benkyousuru is also irregular, because it conjugates based on the rules for suru (same logic for "to call" - denwasuru).
I love how he actually explains when he doesn’t like something in the text book.
It’s something I always missed in when taught English in school, teachers strictly went by the text book and I was always so confused because the text book had the most unrealistic and unnatural English in history.
Your videos are incredibly helpful. I'm learning Japanese from a tutor on iTalki and I find these to be a perfect supplement to help me learn better.
I'm happy to hear that they are helping! I hope they can continue to do so! =D
In tagalog, we have a word similar to だって called “dati” which means before as well. Just a cool thing to point out.
The way I remember the Godan conjugation is the ones with a curve from left to right (u, tsu, ru) are itte, the "complicated" looking ones (mu, nu, bü) are nde, su is shite like sushi(te) (the food) and ku is ite while the gu (i + basically the ku with the 2 little lines) is ide (so i + te also with the 2 little lines)
Your videos are extremely helpful ❤️
I'm happy to hear that they are helping! Thank you for watching! =)
You probably won't see this but, I wanted to tell you how much appreciation I have for the way in which you format these videos, including the website subscriber videos, because they are easy to listen to while driving. There are a lot of nice videos out there, but most require me to have to read subtitles or look at them (because they're not coordinated with Genki) because I don't know the words they're using yet. You explain things in a way that I can understand while watching and taking notes, but also in a way that I can understand while driving and the words that I don't know, you say them and explain them., so I don't miss anything. So, thank you so much. Your work has been a goldmine of help for me!
Your videos are really helping me prepare for my N5 in the UK in July! lifesaver!
This series is a banger and so happy to have Andy さんas 先生🙏
Damn, McDonalds on the first date... No wonder the poor woman was so hesitant to spill the tea.
Andy, these lessons have been fantastic. Love the format. Thank you so much for your hard work.
What a great lesson. Thank you for doing such a thing 🥰
This is the halfway point through Genki 1, good job! Keep going, you got this! 頑張ってね!【がんばってね!】
i just found your channel and i literally have no idea what do i do without your channel!! genki is such a confusing book without a teacher, and ur a perfect teacher!!
Been on youtube for 12 years, never commented once. But this is a masterpiece! Thanks heaps for the efford you put into this.
All the example sentences are super helpful!
I'm happy to hear that. Thank you for watching!
I've been practicing Japanese for a while but I could keep rewatching these first 5 lessons for a while to come. I've learned most of this but basics need a lot of practice
actually an amazing video, thanks andy!
Thank you so much for all your effort!
thanks Andy! you helped me a lot!
AMAZING! Please continue teaching.
I started learning japanese 1 year ago, but I was so inconsistent that I'm still a beginner. I'm currently learning vocabulary with anki and your grammar videos help me a lot with grammar! I'm writing everything you say that I think is important in my notebook to memorize it and I feel like It's working for me. I hope I can understand easy storys and videos soon so I can learn japanese that way. The only language I learned, that I am "fluent" in (depends on what you count as fluent) is english and I achieved that because I started watching english content as soon as I understood the context. I hope I'm able to learn japanese the same way soon. Thanks for your help!
Thank you so much for these lessons!!!
I know I’m super late but THANK U SM THIS HAS BEEN A LIFESAVERRR
This series has been an incredible supplement to a casual japanese class I'm taking. thanks a ton!!
You're very welcome! I'm happy it's been able to help. =)
Thank you for your videos. I am taking Japanese almost a year now, and am just learning the -te form, so this comes in handy and you make it very understandable. I'm hoping to travel there (Japan) next spring so I need all the help I can get. My sensei's lessons and yours are very helpful. :)
He's so good :0 You have taught me the importance of the face towlette
Thank you so much for putting these together! It's really helpful. I just found this now I'm on chapter 6 and I can't tell you how much it really helps to see this in context, as well as a better insight on what on earth I'm meant to be writing in the work book!
I'm happy to hear that you are finding them useful! Thank you for watching!
Woooww. FInaly I got it. THANKS A LOT. I´ve been trying to understand this for months.
These lessons are so great, I always watch these videos before my Saturday classes to get ahead of the lesson so I can be prepared. But you break it down so simply and make it very easy to understand! ありがとございます 😊
I'm happy to hear that they are helping! Keep it up. =)
Wow just found this channel. Fantastic content. Compared to everything else out there it’s 百点!!
Thank you 🙏 Andy
Your videos are a life saver 👍👍
These videos help me so much with Japanese .
Excellent content brah! I'm a long-time fan of nihongo but have never learned to fully communicate after a few years of university classes and two business trips to Japan. In preparation to host some students from Tokyo Denki later this summer, I'm plowing through your Genki courses and just joined as a supporter. Also working through the Refold JPK1K deck.
i know you were talking about japanese schools, but in australia, our japanese teacher did say tatte kudasai at the start of the lesson, and i didnt really understand it, but we all would stand up when she said it. now 20 years later, as soon as i heard the verb tatsu and its te form in particular, it totally clicked
Incredibly helpful, thank you.
I'm happy to hear that! Thank you for watching. =)
i love your stuff dude
The best teacher!
this is very helpful
Thanks for your video lessons. Just finished lessons 1-6. I have my final exam for Beginner Japanese I (studying a Japanese major) at my university and I am hella nervous. These lessons did help since I don't have time to reread all half of Genki I and the textbook just doesn't do a good job of explaining things
Your lessons are really amazing! I am using them to review Genki 1 after I finished it and omg it all makes so much more sense with someone explaning to me out loud. My native language it is not english, so sometimes, some explanations in the text form are really hard to understand.
I'm happy to hear that! Thank you for watching! =)
Man I am so thankful for your videos lol. For all this time I pronounced ~てはいけません as "ha" instead of "wa". I'd have never learned this had I not watched your video lol.
This is super helpful, thanks so much
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!
Can't stop cracking up whenever you say "NANI"?!?!?!
Thanks for your passion and effort you put into that. Like many others, I really appreciate it! Keep it going :)
Thank you so much Sven! I'm happy to hear that you're finding these helpful. =)
"死んで... That means die" (awkward pause)
I was quite casually listening whilst preparing my dinner and this caught me so off guard with laughter 😂
Thanks so much.
Andy, the way you explain grammar is brilliant! I am on vacation and started Genki at the beginning of August, and I've just completed Chapter 5 with you. Your videos motivate me to study more because even if I'm tired or not in the mood to learn, I just put your video on and keep going. These are so fun that I forget that I initially didn't intend to learn that much on that specific day.
I loved the examples and the song! Too bad I already remember both Japanese and English lyrics of "Country road" (thanks to a Ghibli movie). But it's so catchy and so much fun! You are the best and your channel needs way more recognition!
Thank you so much Anastasia! I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying the lessons! ☺️
AさんとCさん会話間は本当に楽しいよ.
Thank you Andy! keep up the great work. Also the TE form song played in the video can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/Cj-P-nEPoe0/v-deo.html
I've spent my last two Japanese classes trying to understand the て form and yet I understand the conjugation much more from this video. ありがとうございます。
Defo singing the song to myself for the rest of the evening & will be watching the rest of your series to see what else you can simplify for me.
アンヂさん の
ビデオ を 見てもいいですか
I'm happy to hear that it helped!
By the way, if you want an update on the song, check this out ;-) ua-cam.com/video/Dfh5FyVdhUI/v-deo.html
i found you from reddit recommendation and i found this helpful specially if you are a learner who dont have teacher and just self learning, thank you so muchhh - your new student
You're welcome! I'm glad you're finding it helpful.
ありがとうございました😊
とんでもない! Thank you for watching! =)
Something about the way you say "die I guess" is so funny to me
That Te song is really catchy! I usually don't listen to songs when I learn, but I grew up with the ABC-song when I learned both Swedish and English.
And they are really helpful. Will put the song in my UA-cam favorites!
Here is my answer for this question:
私はだいじょうぶを言ってください。
(Don't know if the sentence works. It's supposed to be directed towards yourself. It's important to remind one self that you're doing a great job!)
Thankyou
I know you shared that song somewhat ironically but it actually helped me out
You may find this interesting then: ua-cam.com/video/Dfh5FyVdhUI/v-deo.html
These uploads are great thank you. Will you be uploading videos without chat for lessons after 6?
I'm happy to hear that! Yes, I will be adding cut versions like this for every single lesson moving forward. =)
You could memorize the conjugations with this song...
Meanwhile...
COUNTRY ROADS... TAKE ME HOME
4:12 Proves that author is genius.
The song is fire btw😤🔥 😹
You explained this whole lesson better than my professor.
Lesson 6 !!!!!! Let's do this
いしょうにいく!!!!
^
I don't know its that right but I'm hyped
I saw you in lesson 9, so it sounds like you did well!
The easiest way to say what you wanted to say there is: いこう! or いきましょう!
Te form song is 🔥🔥🔥

Hi, when you mention that you need to replase te for ta and de for da to make the informal version of the te form with the Godan Verbs, is that valid for the Ichidan and irregular verbs?
美味しいスイカをたくさん食べてください。
Thanks Andy
I learned this from a song but using the -ます form to me "The song" makes better sense if coming from -ます form:
い、ち、り。。。って
に、び、み。。。んで
き。。。いて
ぎ。。。いで
し。。。して
Examples:
します -- して
来ます -- 来て (きて)
行きます -- 行って (いって)
You can find is online as the い、ち、り。。。って song
Dear Andi, could you recommend some podcasts on japanese culture? Best!
Never too late to learn, or just try, I plan to live in Japan now there is no way , now that I’m here, to be without some language, I will be in a fog without, or unappreciated, hard to explain.
Thank you so much for your videos I watched all the first 6 lessons for a little revision before my exam
Thank you for watching! I hope that they helped you on your test!
made it thru 6!
Not Country Roads getting a remix 😂
Arigatou gozaimasu...
thanks for the KARA explanation. i was looking at another video and they were using _____ kara _____ as a conjucntion and was like "but genki puts kara at the end ..."
thanks for clearing that up. i guess for the purpose of my class, i'll have to learn the unnatural way of giving a reason lol
Indeed. I was quite annoyed that they taught this random usage first. As you could probably tell. haha
you help me a lot thank you. you sound like a teenager in some of your examples. does Japanese really talk that expressive?
Thank you,my japanese class now will be a less difficult .
I'm glad to hear it. Thanks for watching!
I’m a bit confused about past tense て form. Is it just regular past tense, like “He came”, or is it still a request as in “I asked him to come”.
Maybe I am missing something, but it seems like the tense of the te-form when used in a sequence of events changes depending on the context? Sometimes it can turn a verb into "ate" and sometimes it can be used in "go to"? Am I forgetting something obvious or am I correct it's contextual? (sorry if this is explained later in the lesson, still not done yet ha)
edit: Nevermind... watched about 30 more seconds and saw your explanation about the final verb indicating tense. Gotta be more patient lol
at 30:25 why does ni come after ato.I thought that ni is used with movement verbs
36:45 "sardonic" may be a good word for what you're going for here
*Genki teaches grammar*
Andy: I dont really like how genki teches this section
My fkin boy if I watch all of these my N5 may just be made!
Country roads be taking us to japan now lmao
On my last trip to the USA while in a brewhouse doing Karaoke I was asked if I could sing a song in Japanese, so I sang the "te-form song"... I never told them it was just a verb conjugation, but they loved it. Hey... if you can sell it, then sell it, eh? ;)
Haha that is so good. I think I’m going to
do that next time something like that happens to me. 😂
私の関係よりもAとBとの関係の方が心配です。
(I hope it's grammatically correct)
Ojamashimasu/mashita? That's new for me. Sensei, what about Ittekimase/Itterasshai? Is the latter only used when you are leaving your own house?
Maybe I missed the information, but If I want to ask if sth is forbidden, do I just place a "ka" behind the " ha ikemasen"?
Thanks very much, Ando-san. This is most helpful.
A quick question if you don't mind. I find that my memorisation of new words for each chapter takes far longer than going over the grammar points and exercises.
Just wondering if a general suggestion is to either:
1. Keep going through each chapter and learn new words on the background, or
2. Finish learning new words first before moving on to the next chapter.
Thanks again.
I generally recommend moving on if you feel comfortable with the grammar. The vocabulary will continue to show up, so you will get plenty of exposure. ☺️
