I loved that you showed your thoughts on how you deal with the environment changing, like the cars leaving and the light changing as you painted. Great stuff!
You have done a very good job of directing the shadows in the painting! I really like your color plate! 👍👍❤️❤️ I also like to do plain air painting. I like to do watercolor painting most of the time!
That's funny to say, but the strange thing is that it's really true. There's some kind of force in nature that keeps a required amount of necessary frustration in life. Buddhism calls it "Dukkha".
Your videos are absolutely the best! I love your facial expression when the guy drove off. Thank you for sharing your brilliance and warmth during these long difficult days of COVID.
Your creative ...efficiency.......makes me feel like a beginner...and beginner....with every painting of yours...you keep moving my goal post farther and farther....It's never ending nectar of creativity....from YOU🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@spibow Guess you are right. What I meant it's that if you are only using watercolors you can't go with light over dark, the process is exactly the opposite.
Best watercolor painter many people don't know him and his videos so we should atleast like all his videos to make him feel that we are glad that we could find his channel
I so felt with you when the Car went away. Thats so painting from live...and i do always have this. (Even when I secretly paint my Cats or my daughter at home) In 2018 i went to London for a few days, so I decided to wake up early as as I can to come back at least with a few sketches- and even there >.> stuff cars and such moved XD. And I just did pencil - sketches. Btw: you brought me to dive in Gouache. Iam actually a watercolor person, but for some reason i never had so much to do with Gouache. But I was totally impressed by you work and gave it a try. Thank you :) I love them so much! (though I still do my underpaint more with watercoler- or a thin layer of acrylic paint. One day i might try Casein too. :) But right now its not exactly the time to invest much in new material, just for playing- so much I wish to do)
Well done as usual Mr. Gurney. When did you recognize that local color should be downplayed as related to overall values and general warm and cool tones? Was that something you were taught or just figured out through trial and error? Fascinated by that aspect of your work.
Another wonderful painting, the joy of working from life is you never know what will change from start to finish. Like with the cars and the light moving. Curiously, if you had a smart phone would you consider taking a quick reference picture to use for some of the details from the car?
Wait a minute... I know that spot! That's the back/side of Hannaford with the railroad track across the street. Man... Seeing this... I'm missing NY right now 😔 but at the same time I'm loving the video. Reminding me of home 😉 Thanks for this Mr Gurney. I very much enjoy your videos of local areas that I know and used to live near.
I love thoses short video with so much to learn in few minute ! I really appreciate your work, and dinausaurus art and dynotopia. Any low price brand to recommand in gouache ? Love and support from France 😊
Hey Mr. Gurney! I'm an enormous fan of your work and had just ordered your book Color and Light. I am wondering what other books and techniques you used to become such a master! How can a beginner learn? What kind of paint do I use as a beginner? Finally, do I start my art education with sketching? Thanks and have a great day!
Can I use my watercolor mixed with casein to prime my paper before I paint. I only have white casein and wanted to tint it. If I do that will it alter the casein?
Re: your car moving on you. I HATE when that happens! I once had an entire BARN move on me! (That really happened! Ha!) Nice painting of an everyday scene!
Ah man, you skipped over the whole middle part of you painting! It went from a block in to finish and the process in between we didn’t see. How we going to learn to improve our painting skills. You’re the best of the best and we can learn so much from you if you give us more. Naturally your finished sketch was just wonderful and your description of using warm and cools was so good!
Mr. Gurney, is this a study of fast drawing/painting technique or of vehicles? If you want more time, have you considered drawing/painting in a car dealership?
Someday I hope you make a video about your thought process when looking for subjects to paint. You tend to choose very mundane but familiar scenes. What makes something special? Composition? Lighting? Mood? I’d love to get a peak into your thought process.
Quick answer: I'm often pursuing an abstract interest in color or lighting, almost devoid of subject matter, but other times I have a specific subject or angle in mind. Often there are practical considerations such as traffic, weather, time, and change of lighting. Your question inspired a while blog post, which you can read here: gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2020/12/how-do-you-choose-painting-subject.html
I got my casein paints here, mr Gurney. But they're a little bit harder to control. It's not as easy as gouache. It takes a while to get used to the paint. I don't know if it's the paper I'm using. I'll try the gessoed canvas I made now to see how they handle over it.
So does casein behave similar to acryla gouache? I had never heard of casein as paint until I found this channel. I always knew casein as an ingredient in cheese because my dad worked at a cheese plant.
I watch for all those reasons ... as well as his soothing voice! His clear non intimidating or belittling instructions (as some folk can come across as) And the fact James and his beautiful Wife have each and together the most genuine of Souls and come across as warmer than the most vivid warmth their inspiring paintings create!
I have been doing watercolour and trying out guaoche. I don't quite used to the way guaoche would reactivate with new layer od paint. Should I try out casein instead?
Your push and pull of warm to cool tones is always masterful. It is like an improved reality
Reality 2
I love the moment when your initial colour blocks suddenly transform into Vermeer-level lighting.
That flipping stop motion at the the end... amazing
It's a low frame rate, not quite the same thing. He does a little edit and reverse on the point-holds to increase the effect.
Semantics. It’s stop motion and it’s awesome.
I saw the title and I thought you were going to LITERALLY PAINT ON A PARKED CAR. Not disappointed at all tho.
You could also read it like the car is parked on top of casein paint 😂
Love the new ending! So fun.
That outro! 😍😍😍
Techniques with casein are amazing, lovely glazes, underpainting and happy accidents. I am always learning from JG.
I loved that you showed your thoughts on how you deal with the environment changing, like the cars leaving and the light changing as you painted. Great stuff!
The outro brought a smile to my face. Genius!
Happy Halloween ! 🎃👻🎃 Wow!🤩 Absolutely love it!🥰Thank you for this amazing sharing!🙏 🌷🙏🌹🙏 🌺 🙏 💝
Thank you for that Video always a plesure! Nice outro to,👍👍
Nice lighting effects. I love the idea of using chalk to create that misty effect, too.
(to keep as a note:
1. Light & shadow
2. Warm & cool
3. Local color)
P.s. great outro Mr. Gurney! :D
Amazing Painting!👍👍💥💥
allways get a lot of inspiration from Mr. Gurney's videos. I have tons of snapshots...I think I'll go through them 😊
It Looks so easy, 🤗thank you so much, for your effort. Nice picture🎨👌
New end screen :D !

Beautiful work sir, thank you for all your diligence and painting knowledge!
your painting looks better than the real life scene itself. GREAT JOB
You do make the ordinary look vibrant and important.
And of course, if you were waiting to park in one of those spaces, the cars would have never left! Lovely work as usual, James! 👍✌

Great painting. Love your end screen in your vid.
You have the most interesting videos. Thanks.
Congratulations James, it's wonderful !
I love your end screens.

Thank you. I was hoping to make it back to Ottawa to paint there, but may have to wait a bit.
Great video, as always
Love all your videos & always wish they were longer. I could watch you paint for an hour!
I am waiting for your book to come to me and I am so impatient!!
I busted out laughing when the car left!! Haha, you're so darn good at making everything work anyway.
You are such a wonderful artist "
Awww, You're such a sweet and beautiful woman ♥️. Wish you a blessed, wonderful weekend 💞 and Stay safe always 🙏
the face when you saw the car leaving got me a lil sad but fantastic painting as always
Always love your videos.
I can only hope to even get close to doing a painting that shows what I was looking at
Absolutely gorgeous work. I'm so inspired by your work Mr. Gurney. Great teaching here and wonderful demonstration of skill.
Beautiful work sir ♥️
Great as usual! Really enjoy these everyday scenes of suburban life.
It's a pleasure to observe your painting process, it's so simple! Yet, as a painter I can only admire... The result is amazing!

IDK you could be this good with watercolors b4 i seen you!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Don't know if it's watercolor. Surely it's not only watercolor.
@@weill6872 It's casein paint, similar to watercolours but not quite. He also paints with gouaches, which are a similar story :)

Thank you so very much for a beautiful video. You really brightened my day. Thank you.
Everybody left but you nailed it.
There's a lot of multicolored glow in that painting. Like facets of a diamond.
loved all the video, always wonderful work!
Great painting; this started my day off right. Love the new outro
Just and simply, amazing as always. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and talent 😊🙌
try to stay safe gurney
Great video, as usual. And I recognize this location as the exterior of the grocery store you've painted at before!
Amazing. I wish I had Mr. Gurney's talent.
Thank you James ☺

Welcome, and thanks! UA-cam is a big place. I keep finding new channels and wonder "Where was that all my life?"
I would love you as a teacher who teaches me person to person (you see real time ) :)
Would be interesting if you did one more video of acrylic gouache but I can see how you want to stay with the classic paints.
